So last game we saw Andrew Cogliano’s return… now we get to see Dustin Penner… however this isn’t his first game back to Edmonton. It is, however, his first game back since the pancake injury. If you saw the lady who was responsible for the delicious stack, you might not be so critical. I can also say that Dustin Penner’s “fat” is still in better shape than me.. so I’d never honestly be critical of the guy’s weight/shape. I just love a good laugh and glad he is taking it in stride and poking fun at himself.

Anyways, the Oilers are in a world of hurt right now, sliding down the standings… they’re running out of spots to slide down to. Currently, only the team that beat them 5-0 (Anaheim Ducks) and the Columbus Blue Jackets sit below them in the standings. The Ducks are just one point behind. Let’s be honest… when the season started, no one expected the Oilers would be near the top of the standings like they were… however this has been a monumental collapse to their season and is incredibly disappointing. There are cries for a few heads out in Oilersland from Renney to Tambellini. I’m not willing to give up on Renney, but the other fellow seems to be either still in the tear-it-down phase, or is horrible at reacting to troubled times here and plugging holes.

No word on the lineup just yet, so I’ll post the same as last game for now and modify it later.

Taylor Hall – Sam Gagner – Ales Hemsky
Lander – Shawn Horcoff – Ryan Jones
Ryan Smyth – Ryan O’Marra – Magnus Paajarvi
Darcy Hordichuk – Josh Green – Ben Eager

Ladislav Smid – Jeff Petry
Theo Peckham – Corey Potter
Andy Sutton – Colten Teubert

Devan Dubnyk
Nikolai Khabibulin

More Pancake Gate humor.. this from Tencer:

Dustin Penner just left the Oilers room after visiting some of the boys. He had a jug of maple syrup, a gift from one of his ex-teammates.

Beauty goal by Hall on a beauty ‘never give up’ pass from Horcoff to pull out the OT win! Love it!

Feeling a bit of doom and gloom in Oil Country the past while – folks this is still a young team learning to win and there are going to be growing pains. The vets aren’t always going to be stellar either. They responded very well tonight, have to take it one game at a time.

They worked hard pretty much the entire game. I was impressed with their compete level and hunger for loose pucks. Well played game. And yes, that no look pass was a beauty

I think during my entire rant i was clear that my problem with the oilers is excuses and mixed messages from the head coach. no coach should ever be using the schedule as an excuse and no coach should publicly rip a tough guy for taking a 2 minute minor roughing for responding to a late and cheap hit on a teammate…then rip on him a few weeks later for not responding physically to a clean hit on a teammate.
or how about the doozy where renney talked about how the players need to be able to recognize on the ice when to adapt to their opponents. lol. and then the normal mantra …that they abandoned their game plan and got drawn into what their opponent was doing. LMAO… shades of his NY firing.
ive studied the history of renney in nyr and van, in the last few weeks. History repeating itself as if scripted.

other thoughts- penner is a troll. i dont believe for a second that the pancake incident actually happened. the guy likes trolling. his typical dry wit humor is all over the pancake gate.

horcoff needs to be less ho-hum and hold his team more accountable. He doesnt need to be messier but reading Messiers book might help him recognize when he needs to push people to the wall and when he needs to be honest with the press. He also needs to take some pride in being the captain…which at times will means being the sacrificial lamb. That means fighting, it means getting rid of your nice boy image, it means facing humility on the ice. if people arent stepping up you step up for them… its what a captain does without second thought. I see alot of people answering some serious bells and you continually doing a ho-hum “well thats the way the game goes”. put a cork in it Zane.

btw did i hear right that tyler myers –rhd 6’8″— is being shopped by buffalo? whaaa?
i wouldnt give up my first… and im hoping magnus can adapt and use his frame cycling like a sedin in a few years but maybe we have the assets to make a decent offer using some other leverage? maybe a kessel type package? 1st in ’13, whitney?

I want Grigorenko pretty badly if we can get him. RNH, Grigor, Lander…. and i hope we can get a guy like dubinski in the summer so that if players need seasoning we dont have to be basement dwellers again because of it. I would love Myers but not at the cost of that pick now because we will soon have assets to trade the pieces we choose, or cap to sign a guy in his peak.

I think maybe you ditch hemmer for a mid 1st…and if myers is available you package the defenseman of their choice your hemsky pick OR ’13 1st rd and your 12 2nd round plus prospect not named marincin klefblom

Nothing I’ve read (and I’ve tried to dig something up, including reading Sabres online news sites) suggests that the Sabres are moving Myers. That doesn’t make it untrue (much like reading about it doesn’t make it true), but I have to ask where you heard that. All I had seen was one guy on Twitter suggesting to David Staples that we should trade our 1st for Myers.. and that doesn’t equate to a valid rumor.

I have read though that the Oilers are interested in a D from Nashville, but the targets weren’t Weber/Suter (although I’m sure 29 teams in the league would love a shot at one of them), but rather Ryan Ellis. I had been thinking about trading for him recently too. Reunite two Windsor Spitfires that had fantastic chemistry with each other. My only problem is Ellis is very small for the defense position. He’d be a great PP option, but it’s hard to know how he’d be defensively. Stephane Robidas does fine, and he’s under 6′ / 200lbs. though, so you just don’t know.

The Predators apparently won’t part with him, but would part with Jonathan Blum (this rumor I read on Spector’s – the rumor guy, not the SNET guy – based on Jim Matheson’s column). Blum is a right-handed D (which, I’m sure you all know by now, I covet due to it being harder to find good RHD) and plays a fairly rounded game. He’s missing a physical element, but I can live with that, even though I don’t like that. Blum currently makes $942K and is about to turn RFA.

I still think we should aim higher (need ourselves a home-run here), but Blum would make an excellent addition.

    (Home Run Guy)-Gilbert

Whitney isn’t part of my long term plans. Not because he keeps getting injured.. well not directly. I haven’t really been totally sold on him. Last year, I thought he was very overrated early in the season, although later on I did take a liking to him and thought he was very good. But this foot problem could cause him to be inconsistent. So I’d consider aiming higher. Although it’s definitely not a loss if we keep him. But we can’t bring in better bodies and hang on to everybody.
