PRE-GAME RANT
On paper, the Oilers should get smoked horribly. I’m not so sure they won’t, but the Oilers seem to have a habit of showing up for big games like these. But the Red Wings are a killer force this year, just like they are every year. They had a slow start to the season, but they seem to have found their game. The Oilers are definitely catching them at a bad time. Not that there is necessarily a good time for the Oilers to catch any team.
Khabibulin will get the start tonight.

Paajarvi to OKC.. is it good for him?
Magnus Paajarvi was reassigned to Oklahoma City Barons today. I think this is a great move by the Oilers, but one that was actually probably around 3 weeks or so too late. As those of you who have been regular readers here would know, I really like Paajarvi, but thought his development was being stinted by not getting the ice time he really needs.
Now, before people jump on that and continue with the “he’s being screwed, like Omark!” argument, he wasn’t being screwed. There is no way anyone can tell me that Paajarvi showed anything to this point to be playing ahead of the likes of Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Eberle, Smyth, and even Horcoff and Hemsky. There is a small argument there that they could have bumped Paajarvi up in favor of Hemsky, perhaps. But it was going to be a tough go for Paajarvi to break into the top six. Playing on the 3rd line and not generating any offense wasn’t a huge issue, since he wasn’t leaking goals against, at least. But you have to figure that the kid’s best shot at developing is by getting a lot of minutes in a low pressure situation where he could regain confidence. That place is OK City. I like it… took them too long.. but I like it.
Your thoughts?

PRE-GAME RANT
It has been so long since the last Oilers game (4 days off) that I got accustomed to no Oilers hockey, and almost forgot there was a game tonight.
Tonight the Oil face the Coyotes. The Coyotes sit just above the Oilers in the West standings at 9th place, with 2 more points. So I’d say this is an important game, not that they all aren’t.
We should see the return of both Taylor Hall and Corey Potter, which is fan-fuckingtastic news for a team that’s had a bit of a tough go in their last 10. The Oilers are in a small bind though… they have 24 bodies on their roster if Hall and Potter return. That means they need to send someone down. Who do they send down? Obvious choices are: Anton Lander, Lennart Petrell, Magnus Paajarvi, or Colten Teubert. Who goes? I say Paajarvi. Will he though? Wonder what Omark would suggest on this…
Devan Dubnyk will get the start tonight. Tom Renney says “he’s just tired”, in regards to Nikolai Khabibulin. Is it really a back-to-back start for Dubnyk if he had 4 nights of rest? I don’t think so. Anyways, this stuff about Khabi is definitely a concern. Perhaps they are just being overly cautious (which has been the theme with a few guys this year), but it doesn’t sound so good. But sure… rest him up. Hopefully Dubnyk can find his game again.

World Junior Championships, baby!
The preliminary World Junior Championship rosters are available here.
I tried hunting through the prospects for Oilers players, and here is what I found:
– Team Sweden
Oscar Klefbom (D)
– Team Slovakia
Martin Gernat (D)
Martin Marincin (D)
– Team Latvia
Kristians Pelss (F)
– Team Czech Republic
David Musil (D)
So, by my count, we have 5 Oilers prospects at the World Junior Championships this year… 4 of them on defense. Interesting.
