Andy Sutton, moments before murdering someone..

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN reports that Brendan Shanahan has suspended Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton “indefinitely” for his hit on Carolina Hurricanes forward Alex Ponikarovsky (video here). Shanahan has offered Sutton an in-person hearing, which means the league can suspend him 6-plus games should they choose to.

This is (potentially) Andy Sutton’s second suspension of the season, which won’t help his cause too much. We will soon find out if Brendan Shanahan is an expert, or not.

How long should Andy Sutton be suspended, for hitting Alex Ponikarovsky?

Sutton is suspended indefinitely and has been offered an in-person hearing (as per CBA rules if Shanahan wants to suspend for more than 6 games he has to offer a hearing). Sutton left his feet on the Pony hit in question. The length of this suspension for a 2 minute minor penalty is going to be rediculous. This issue needs a thread.

Some of us work, you know :P

Anyways, Jason Gregor figures 8 to 12 games.. yikes.. I hope not.

Hard for him to escape blame on this one. Left his feet, and I don’t buy that the impact took him off his feet, as some are trying to sell. But I wouldn’t go suspending him 8 or 9 games. Eventually he’s going to have to figure out how to hit guys a little better, given his size. That hit on Skinner was absolute money though. This one on Poni, he got a bit of hang time, and the arm(s) up.

BTW, I have no problems with Sutton hitting like that, as an Oil fan. I would say that he should save those big ugly hits for intra-divisional games though. Getting suspended over a team we don’t even play again this year isn’t too wise of a move. But he had a nice physical game though, so I am not upset about it. It’s good to have that Torres-type here again. Although he’s a far cry from that. But we need a d-man that keeps guys on their toes, Darcy Regehr style.

We should just sign a midget to go out there and draw suspensions.

That was a 2 min penalty IMO and nothing more.

I think by Shannys new rules it was suspension worthy. Left ice, arms up. Hard to defend. Sounds like he wilwaive in person hearing btw

    ‘not an expert’

however he’s gone for 10+ games, suspension for Fistric was 3 and that was a ‘clearner’ hit than this, Sutton has already been suspended once this season.

the official on the ice has the ability to assess an attempt to injure and game misconduct. i can understand if an infraction is not fully observed by the officials on the ice with the call missed in a dead zone but when the on-ice officials deem it warrant only a 2 minute minor shanahan and the nhl look like tards for suspending a player 1/8th of the year for a minor.

that being said, i love sutton and the oilers will find a way to make sure he doesnt lose a dime.

sutton was right not to show; he is saying it wont change jack nor shit. When Andy comes back he will play the same way and as a coach i love that.
The oilers played like pathetic crap for the second, well 3rd really, night in a row and about 3 weeks of crap with one good game squeezed in against gutter trash opponents on a few nights. id jump someone and take my anger out on some innocent opposition after having to deal with watching pathetic lil wimps in my colors being tossed around like rag dolls and making me look like a pansy by correlation. Being pushed around on home ice no less. dallas was embarassing but damn, we let a few teams roll over us on home ice. pathetic. hats off to eager and sutton.

Horcoff had a horrible game vs caro. i am a huge horc defender but damn was he atrocious.

growing pains hurting but…rnh keeps ticking. the skinniest guy on the team is looking the biggest.

The sad thing is that a 4th liner on the Avs (Porter) who threw out a blatant knee that knocked out Booth from the Nucks for 6-8 weeks will end up serving less time then Sutton.

That makes a ton of sense but such is life in the new era of the NHL.

i ripped on the team but not as bad as they are getting ripped in the local news tonight and this morning (a little late to read the locals).

Anyways i have been tough on hemsky but i think i have given him credit when he deserved it too. Seeing RNH play shows me why i was so hard on hemsky. rnh hard back checks, rnh has good positioning, rnh only handles a puck as much as he absolutely needs to.

not to pick on hemmer but he is still injured. ive seen him grab his shoulder probably 30-40 times and wince since his latest return. he even grimmaced and rubbed the shoulder after sliding on the ice on HIS OPPOSITE SHOULDER after scoring versus the gutter trash columbus whatevere they are called. if he is injured, tell him to hang them up the rest of the year. now some gutter trash team called the hurcs or something come in and the best players on the ice for us are 2 cast offs and 2 boys who cant buy alcohol yet.

renney better get a hammer out soon.

btw my issue is with coaching. pansies are pansies and coaches give them ice time. we really only have one guy who i call a pansie – its not hemmer who i think is still very much injured and will never be 100% ever again he is finished- on this team but we keep playing him and that is coaches call and it infects the rest of the team. coach needs to adapt instaantly. line changes and matchups on the spot to adjust, change your pp set up and strat. with one word on the bench. 5 games to adjust is unacceptable to me and unfortunately its the players in the hot seats for what is a coaching issue. for motivation and pumping up players egos…renney is king. I have yet to see him make instant adjustments in game like every other coach does. if a team has a 2 man hard press to meet half wall distrubutor? bottle neck the slot to 4 on 2 and play that game. easy peasy. dont stand right behind the press against the wall and right infront. gawdam

We have Gagner in the midget position. That’s what she said. 10+ for sure. Should only be one or two at most IMHO in the wold where this is not as bad as Shanny makes it out to be.

  14. Steve-O says:

Yeah, I bet it’ll be over 10 games…and I still haven’t even seen the hit. But you look at the fact that he just got suspended for 5, he’ll be gone for a while.

In fact, this might be Shanahan’s first shot at a repeat offender.

  15. Grass&sOIL says:

10 Games for Sutton. IMO that is 7 games too many.

Edit: This comes from Terry Jones who now says this is unconfirmed.

  16. Grass&sOIL says:

It’s now official. 8 games for Andy Sutton. A lil less then I expected but still more then I think he deserves.
