PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers are coming off an awful 6-3 shellacking by the hands of the Boston Bruins yesterday. I don’t predict that this one will be any better, but I’m pretty sure my track record for predictions is pretty awful.

Tonight Cam Barker is out (ankle injury), while Andy Sutton returns from his suspension (that is great news). Magnus Paajarvi will also draw in for this one while Ben Eager sits against what is probably the least dirty team in the league.

Prediction: 5-3 Detroit

OILERS LINES (PROJECTED)

Hall – Nugent-Hopkins – Eberle
Smyth – Horcoff – Hemsky
Jones – Belanger – Gagner
Paajarvi – Lander – Petrell

Smid – Gilbert
Sutton – Potter
Peckham – Petry

Oilers are in a bit of a funk.. possibly due to them not being a good road team. I am not certain of that though, but it’s possible.

Might need to consider juggling lines for the road a bit. Too much is being hung on the vet line with the Kid Line being shut down by other teams’ top d-lines and the other lines struggling to generate offense.

The Oilers are 3-4-1 on the road though (which isn’t a bad road record) and it’s not at all too late to get things in order… just saying that maybe they might want to juggle those lines a bit. Spread the kids around 2 or 3 lines.

We have been in a funk all year offensively. we dont have very many goals for. that it hasnt been acknowledged is scary. i think its too late to be juggling lines. 13 shots in montreal seemed like the time to do it. id like to hear the coaches explanation of why he doesnt. best coaches change their lines when they dont get the change (road trip). he better have a good reason. i am under the assumption he is doing it with a long term out look; that the kids will have to deal with it at some point so lets get the growing pains out of the way. nugent has been the star of that line and i wouldnt be opposed to seeing him dangle with hemsky and maybe hall (if hall stops making bad entry decisions via the ol 1 on 4). considering the horrendously stupid turn-overs we have seen all year i dont think defensive chemistry is the reason to avoid forward line juggling.
coaches dont just coach in the practices and pre-games… they coach and adjust in game. thats what you count on a coach to do. i dont see it, other than the end of montreals game where they had smyth take halls place on the kid line for a few shifts.
i dont think simply changing centres in the top two lines will do it. i think they need an actual 3rd line to start contributing. hemsky for eberle might be useful to fuel some stuff. lander magnus jones.
meh i dont have the answers but i know at 13 shots over 60 minutes, and mostly a whole lot of diddly on this trip… i would actually be putting an effort intocoaching and thus making some adjustments in and out of game.
i have been waiting for a reporter to go “ummm when do you plan to coach in game and make adjustments? you do know that is what the road game is all about in the nhl right?”

road games = good tech and strategy coaches win. if you are just motivational or instructional… all you are doing in game is crossing your fingers and spinning the wheel.
