PRE-GAME RANT

Tonight’s game might feature another new Oiler in Ryan Keller. He’s the guy pictured above with the dirty ‘stache. Sounds like there is a good chance he will play tonight. Shawn Horcoff is rumored to be battling the flu. Hopefully this flu bug ends very quickly. Get some shots or something, damn it. On a good note, Taylor Hall might be back tonight, as he sounds like he’s near 100% now. Khabibulin will get the start in net, which sounds like they’re going 50/50 with these goalies this year. So far, Dubnyk has been off and on, so I can kind of see the reasoning for it. Khabi has been good in his games so far (although one he was barely tested in)… so keep the rotation going until someone screws up royally.

I’ll be at the game for this one. Would love to see a win, however…

Prediction: 2-1 Wild.

OILERS LINES

Hall – Nugent-Hopkins – Eberle
Smyth – Horcoff – Jones
Paajarvi – Belanger – Omark
Eager – Lander – Petrell

Whitney – Potter
Smid – Gilbert
Sutton – Barker

Khabibulin

Wasted pic.. hahah. Keller was recalled, but he won’t play tonight, it would seem.

  2. NorwegianOiler says:

Keller called up just so he can catch the flu and bring it back to OKC, Oiler style.

Remember the flu bug of two years back? Took right about everyone out at one time or another. Let’s avoid that shall we? I can imagine we’ll get sick enough from Minny’s defense first hockey :D

  3. Racki says:

Yah I am kind of hoping that they have Ryan Keller in some sort of saran-wrap like protection device.

    Wash your hands, you bastards!

And who could forget about that flu? Ravaged the whole team. Yeesh.. brutal. Seems like it might be taken a bit more seriously this year.

  4. Racki says:

I just noticed that Potter is paired with Whitney. Lovin’ this.

  5. dawgtoy says:

Think they should try Lander between his fellow Swedes for tonight and let Belanger handle the fourth line. Lander might get sent down as soon as Saturday, therefore he should be given an opportunity to shine along with his Swedish countrymen before then. I’d also rather Hartikainen over Petrell at this point. I think he brings way more to the table, especially at even strength.

  6. Racki says:

They did have Lander with Paajarvi/Omark in the pre-season. I didn’t think they were too effective, but it can take time to build chemistry too. I think Belanger has stood out on that line though as well. It wouldn’t hurt to give it a go. But now that I think about it, I think they had those 3 swedes on a PP and it was a perimeter passing session. Nothing really got done. Lots of good passing, but no one was driving to the net.

  7. john says:

Got a good feeling about this one; Hall is (likely) back, Whitney & Potter as our top D pairing should be great, & the team as a whole played similar to dog shit in Calgary so they should be extra motivated tonight!!

  8. john says:

Well, not too badly played by the Oil… except for the last 7min AGAIN *roll eyes*. I hate the Wild :(

  9. Racki says:

Oilers needed to battle harder for Khabi in this one. He played an incredibly solid game. Mind you, that goal they scored shouldn’t have gone in. But it happens. He played a hell of a game. This was a “mostly good” game played by the Oilers. They really need to figure out a way to put the puck in the net. Maybe they need more guys who play a simpler game. Like, I love Omark, Paajarvi, Hall, Eberle, The Nuge, etc… but maybe we just need to pull one of those guys out for a bit and put in a guy like Hartikainen who will just drive to the net and score a dirty goal. When the puck isn’t going in, you simplify things rather than getting cutesy and making the big plays. That hockey sure is fun to watch though.

The last 2 games have felt like Charlie Brown getting the football pulled out…

That said I think the big problem is just everyone getting used to each other. There were a lot of “almost” plays, passes that were just out of reach, or just a moment hesitation between finding the puck passed to you and taking the shot, and ringing ones off the post etc. The only thing that fixes that is playing and practicing together. Give the boys time to figure out where they are going to be on the ice for each other and the goals will come.

Then hopefully we can spend the last minutes of the game high-fiving and drinking instead of anxiously waiting for the other team to score and ruin our 1 goal lead.

Yeah these last 2 games hurt but I am looking past it for now. IMO the fact that we have not lost a game by more then a goal is very encouraging so far. Really impressed with Khabby so who would have thunk it?) D looks superb. Now all we have to do is learn to finish off games and get the offense going.

  12. NorwegianOiler says:

There wasn’t even time to rage quit this game if one wanted to. Sapped all my energy that goal did.

    No more of this please.

Played a better game than the away matchup against Minnesota though.
