PRE-GAME RANT

After a brief road trip to the mile high city, the Oilers are back home again. The Oilers have enjoyed home ice so far this season and another win would go a long way. They could use the continuation of the win streak to further build momentum before going on the road for 6 games.

After handing the reins to Khabi early on, Dubnyk slotted in Friday night and had an impressive 40 save performance in the win. Hopefully the two can continue to make the starter role a tough decision for management with their solid play.

The Blues are playing .500 hockey right now and are struggling on the powerplay. Combined with the Oilers current success on the P/K, I’d say we have a pretty solid chance of recording another win tonight.

Alex Plante has been recalled from OKC, and should be in town with plenty of time to slot in tonight since the goon Sutton is out of the lineup.

Will post lines when something is made public, but don’t expect too much shuffling with lines that are clicking.

PRE-GAME RANT

So it’s official. Like we didn’t know it was happening, but sorry Brent Sutter, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will not be returning to the Red Deer Rebels. I think we can all agree that he’s been a pleasant surprise here. So has our defense and even… gasp… Nikolai Khabibulin, who really stole a game for us last night against the “best team in the NHL” – the formerly undefeated Washington Capitals who had been averaging close to 4 goals per game. Great work by the Wall, who at least temporarily won fans over. Hopefully that trend continues.

I’m not sure, but I have to figure that Dubnyk starts tonight, being a back to back. I think he’ll play well, but with the Oilers being tired from a shortened rest between games, I think this one could be a loss and the Avalanche will regain #1 spot in the Northwest. That’s right, I said regain, as currently that spot belongs to the Oilers (by tie breaker). I’m not thinking too much of that though, as really it’s way too early in the year, but this has been one of their best starts to a season in quite some time, despite missing services of key players Ryan Whitney and Ales Hemsky.

Prediction: 3-1 Avalanche

PRE-GAME RANT

This game will be a huge test for the team. They’re playing the “best” team in the NHL right now… the undefeated Capitals. We’ll find out if the horseshoe has fallen out of Khabibulin’s ass yet… we’ll find out if our defense really is made of Swiss cheese… and we’ll find out if the Kid Line really is that good.

Looks like Theo Peckham returns for this one, with Whitney out.

This is also the final free-pass with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. After this game, they have to decide whether to send him back to the Red Deer Rebels, or if he will stay with the Oilers. Really, it would be crazy for the Oilers to send him back to Junior at this point though. It won’t happen.

Prediction: 6-4 Capitals

Monday Morning Standings

By , October 26, 2011 8:09 am

3 of my favorite things! Beer, the show Blue Mountain State (seriously funny) and attractive ladies!

Welcome to your Monday (Wednesday) Morning Standings!

Oiler news:
- Renney made some comment about sitting the Nuge for a game so he can take a look from the press box and Oilers fans shit themselves. Which caused Renney to call them stupid (or something close to that). Made me laugh.
- Hemsky should be back soon (another week I think?), and in my opinion join the Horcoff and Smyth line. They can then go power against power, continue to roll the kids against the league dregs and let our third and fourth lines try to out chance their opponents. Good plan to me.

League news:
- Pronger had his eye poked out. Which has now caused a visor discussion. Personally I’m all for letting the players choose (hell, I just went to a visor only this year myself…and it sucks).
- Florida/Vancouver trade – David Booth, Steve Reinprecht (who will stay in the minors apparently) and a 2013 3rd to the Canucks for Mikael Samuelsson and Marco Sturm. Booth is a good pickup.
- Montreal/Phoenix trade – Brock Trotter and a 2012 7th to the Coyotes for Petteri Nokelainen and Garrett Stafford. Meh.
- Jagr scored a couple goals and looked to be in fine form…although it was against Toronto (i know, i know…early season cup favorites but still)
- The Nuge is leading the rookies in scoring! Landeskog is right up there too so I don’t feel so bad about wanting to draft him. Others doing well are Luke Adam (helping me out in the keeper pool!), Craig Smith(?), Matt Read(?), Colin Greening (?) and Sean Couturier.
- Kessel is channeling his inner scorer, but we all know he’ll stop scoring in November.
- Souray is playing really well in Dallas…I thought he was all washed up in Hersey? That’s what the scouts said. Or maybe everyone was just trying to get Tambellini to waive him.

Question for everyone – When do we go for it all? Chicago won it all when Kane was still on his ELC, so do we try when Hall is on his? So next year? Cause once he + Eberle + Paajarvi get paid then it gets more difficult to fill out the rest of the roster. Or do we try to time it when the Nuge is ending his ELC and some of the kid D men are in? Interested to hear your ideas.

PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers line up that was dressed on Saturday played great vs. the New York Rangers (and team that absolutely throttled us 8-2 last year, and added some more goal scoring this year)… so why not give them another go? That’s exactly what will happen tonight. Absolutely no changes, including in net.

Khabibulin has been eerily good so far this season. One can definitely say that he hasn’t been tested too much, and I wouldn’t argue against that at all. Although I’ll say that the few times he has been tested, he’s been up to the challenge. He’s had some scary play outside of the net at times though. But we are definitely used to that, aren’t we? I’m hoping that Khabibulin will keep his streak going. Right now he’s doing his best to show that he’s still got it, being #1 in the league in GAA and #2 in SV%. He nearly had two shutouts in a row, as well. Everything is looking good for him. He mentioned in the off-season that the drunk driving case weighed very heavily on him, and he spoke to how much of a relief it was to have it behind him. If this is true, we might see a rejuvenated Khabibulin all year, which would be a real blessing after seeing him shit the bed basically since he got here. Never underestimate a guy who has something to prove (right Penner?… or wait..), but I’ll watch him closely and with great skepticism. As with any Oiler though, I just hope he can turn things around and make us regret this albatross contract a bit less.

There has been some talk about the Continue reading 'GDT: Oilers 3, Canucks 2 – Game 8 – 2011-10-25 @ 7:30 PM MST – SNETW'»
