Tragedy strikes the KHL

Yet another tragedy...

Another tragedy has struck, and this time it’s the KHL that suffers. A flight has crashed that was carrying the team for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl shortly after take-off. Various reports tally casualties at 36 and there is also word the entire team was on board. They were travelling for their first game of the season.

Familiar NHL names on the staff and roster include Karel Rachunek, Pavol Demitra, Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins, Josef Vasicek, and Brad McCrimmon. Details are still coming in, but it sounds like a massive blow to the start of the KHL season.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Lokomotiv, along with any other staff and passengers that had the misfortune of being on board.

More shitty news this morning that I read on Puck Daddy

Last reports are 34 dead, and majority from the KHL team Lokomotiv.

Just saw this as breaking news on TSN Sportscentre. Here’s the link. Now saying “…the plane was carrying 45 people, including 37 passengers and eight crew. All but two were killed in the crash.”

Edit – per Dmitry Chesnokov’s twitter: Lokomotiv official: “At first we didn’t want to believe it. But right now there is no hope. The team is gone.”
(Alexander) Galimov (the lone survivor from the team) has over 80% of his body covered in burns; he had a surgery, according to doctors!/dchesnokov

Edit #2 – there are now unconfirmed reports Galimov has also passed.

This is terrible. Pavlov Demitra, Ruslan Salei, Josef Vasicek, Karlis Skrastins, Brad McCrimmon (he was the coach) – reports are they are all gone.

Found the link oh HF boards. 2011 is the worst summer on record. Almost every team in the NHL has a conection there in some way, either through players, coaches or friends.

Too many young men leaving their families alone and without a dad or husband. This summer the game has just become secondary to me. It’s easy to see these guys as spoiled millionaires, but this summer has opened up all fans to the people that we watch, not just the stats etc. RIP.
