Housekeeping – Gunna make it rain

By , July 26, 2011 2:39 pm

Just a item to take care of in regards to the site. We have added another advertising item to the sidebar, this one regarding Amazon.ca.

If you buy anything from amazon, we would appreciate it if you would click thru to their site using the link to the side as we would get some help for the site. (Same deal as we have with NHL shop Canada)

The google ads are still here, just at the very bottom should anyone be interested in what those throw your way.

I won’t accidentally click on random ads… I can direct you guys to cheap hosting if you want, Ive read about some dirt cheap host with near unlimited space/bandwith but I think they have little to no support so… Is there a better way to host the data perhaps?

Zack: Best/cheapest way is to host it ourselves, which isn’t happening (far too much maintenance).

As far as a cheap host, we already learned before that you get what you pay for. Unlimited really isn’t unlimited for anyone. Shared hosting (which is what your cheaper hosts would be) isn’t a good option for us either, because the site gets too slow when a bunch of people are on it. Every time we make a twitter post (ex. a new post that automatically tweets there is a new post), a bunch of people jump on at once, and this would cause probs on shared hosting.

We’re fine with our current host, and even paying for the full amount if need be. So while we are grovelling, we’re really not grovelling as bad as it appears :P Recovering the cost of the site would be a nice thing, but we’re not going to have to shut down because of the overwhelming cost, or anything. We’d be happy if the site was self sufficient though.

So, to summarize… we’d love it if you placed an Amazon order through the site if you needed to order stuff off Amazon, and we’d love it if you placed an order through the NHL shop if you needed to order to stuff from the NHL shop. Otherwise, we’ll keep on keepin’ on and be fine.

    How about straight cash?

If you mean taking cash from users, not something I’d be interested in doing. I don’t mind earning a % commission off of sales on things that people were going to buy anyways, but not looking to put out the coffers. :P Like I said, we’re doing fine. We’re not going to go out of business.. it just would be nice if the site paid for itself (without involving users paying for the site).

Any of these “hey look! ads!” posts are just to let you know we have this thing available that would go to helping the hosting costs without costing people any more money than they would have already spent anyways. We’re not at any point where we’re begging for spare change ;)
