Draft Day!

By , June 24, 2011 9:53 am

Draft...draught...get it... (focus on the beer guys)

Thought I’d throw up a post for discussion today about the draft. I’ll also update this with Oilers specific news during the day (or a hate filled rant of Tambellini).

Today is the day that drafting the Nuge/or Larsson/Trade with Florida/acquire Smyth happens.

Update 5:24pm – Bob McKenzie I think confirmed Smyth to the Oilers for Brule, plus the Oilers picked the Nuge @ #1 and put a sexy new home jersey on him.

Update 7:42pm – Oilers pick Klefbom with the 19th pick

Also, chat added.

What the hell is going on…

By , June 23, 2011 2:12 pm

Some big time news coming out right now on TSN:

As per TSN:

The overhaul of the Philadelphia Flyers continued on Thursday, as the club shipped captain Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings.

Coming back to the Philadelphia are forwards Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds.

And, also per TSN:

Jeff Carter has been traded from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In exchange for Carter, the Flyers are expected to receive Jakub Voracek, plus first and third round draft picks.

And finally, TSN is reporting that Regehr was asked to waive his no trade clause to go to Buffalo.

Bob Mac’s NHL Draft Rankings out…

2011 NHL Entry Draft Rankings according to Bob McKenzie

Each year, Bob McKenzie polls a bunch of scouts and does a butt load of work to rank players in the order that he feels they’ll be drafted (based on what the scouts told him… not so much his own opinion). This year’s draft rankings are up for the first two rounds, and includes some “honorable mentions”. It’s worth checking out. I won’t spoil the surprise, you can check the draft rankings out here.

I still am thinking we are going to select Ryan Nugent-Hopkins first overall. Too much promise in this kid to pass him up.

Smyth wants back in

As per TSN.

A deal certainly isn’t imminent and won’t necessarily be an easy transaction for either the Los Angeles Kings or Oilers to close, but sources tell TSN the 35-year-old left winger has indicated to the Kings his preference would be to play next season in Edmonton if a trade can be worked out.

Important details: 1 year remaining, 4.5 mil owed, 6.25 cap

Me personally would love to see him back, but I wouldn’t give up much for a 35 year old salary dump (even though he does contribute a bunch of offense) with only 1 year remaining.
