#1 pick in play?

Are the Oilers shopping the top pick?

Are the Oilers shopping the top pick?

With all the talk that the Oilers are trying to land one or two other 1st round draft picks, TSN brings the news that Tambellini is willing to and has had discussions with other GMs about trading the #1 overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

I don’t think we should be too concerned here. Tambellini, as awful as he can seem to people, likely isn’t thinking of trading the #1 pick overall for Nicklas Lidstrom or some other over-the-hill veteran player whose time is running out but was once phenomenal (well, he may even still be, but you get my point here..). I think I believe him when he says it will take a lot. So we’re talking an already established star player that suits our needs and perhaps also even more, or perhaps some more high first round picks. The players we get would have to be young and fit into the system. Perhaps even the guy whose name is being bandied about… Jeff Carter, could be an example target. I’m not saying that we trade straight up, but I’m curious what you all think it would take, if you were Tambellini.

This is almost poll worthy, but I’ve been a little poll happy lately, and it’s tough to write up a poll for something like this that really shows what people think. So just respond in the comments section with what you think could be a good trade for our #1 overall pick. Or respond by saying that we shouldn’t even trade it at all, if that’s your feeling. Be realistic, if you can…. saying that you’d only trade the #1 pick if we get Ovechkin or Stamkos in return is the same as saying “I wouldn’t trade the #1 pick overall”, so just say the latter.

I heard you were pole happy. ๐Ÿ˜›

I’d trade the first pick for someone like Carter, Richards, Weber, Getzlaf etc. Not too old but known big name players.

    ha, awesome

Ooooh, one of the comments on that TSN article was Gundbranson + 3rd for the 1st pick…I’d do that in a heartbeat.

    Then take Landeskog.

Weber would be for his rights since he’s rfa, but I agree with those names. And trust chucker to jump on a pole… joke… Jump on a pole joke.

Another interesting trade suggestion was with Colorado trading our 1st and 19th for their 2nd overall and the 13th overall (I think St. Louis was 13th?) we might have to add an extra later round pick to make it work, maybe our 3rd round pick or something.

  7. Racki says:

Hey Professor, it’s actually the 11th pick that Colorado has (and yes, it was St. Louis’ pick), but yes, that would be a decent trade to consider too if we’re not completely insistent on one specific #1 pick.

I love the idea of the Florida scenario…although I’m sure we’d have to give up more than just our first pick to get Gudbransen and the third…

Man, I know its kinda pipe dreaming but if Tambi could pull off the acquisition of the Florida scenario and nab Carter it would be a fucking coup for the ages!

If he did that I’d take Couturier with the third.

Do you think Gagner plus our 31st pick plus say a 3rd rounder gets us Carter? It frees up the cap space Philly needs and gives them a young cheap center.

Then lets say it takes our first and nineteenth pick for Fla’s third and Gudbransen?

Damn! heading into a long future with two high end centers like Carter and Couturier and then Horcs as an elite third line C, sprinkle in some Lander, Pitlick, Martindale and VV waiting in the wings…Yes plz!! Our top 4 winger corps is already pretty fucking elite going forward with Hall, Hemsky, Eberle and MPS, plus Omark, Cogs, Brule, Hartikainen, Jones, as depth wingers look pretty damned good too, especially when paired with high end centers…

Plus we’d have that high end big mean stud D prospect in Gudbransen that we desperately need!! Daaaamn!

I think I’d still like to see the D shored up a little with at bare minimum a UFA signing like a Bieksa, or even better a Bieksa and a Wisniewski, and ideally a more seasoned center that can win some draws like a Malhotra type…overpay for two/three years if we have to, make the team respectable for the current NHL’ers and buy some development time for the young stars…

oh and get Victor Fasth over here, let him and DD fight for the starting spot and bury Khabi in the minors…
