Oklahoma City Barons secure playoff spot
Exciting news today. First year AHL team, and Edmonton Oilers AHL Affiliate Oklahoma City Barons have secured a playoff spot in the 2011 AHL Playoffs with a 2-0 victory over the Texas Stars! Jeff Deslauriers earned the shutout, while Colin McDonald and Mylan Kytnar had the goals. McDonald is now tied with Nigel Dawes for the league lead in goals.
While the season for the Edmonton Oilers was not a pretty one, it is great to see the farm team manage to slip into the playoffs despite the vast number of big call ups the Oilers had to make this year. What a great way to kick off a franchise. These guys really should be proud, and it’s a good sign for the future of the big club.
The Barons should get some reinforcements by the time the playoffs start. They get a few players back who are currently with the Oilers. I think they should be able to make a good run in the playoffs.
The only thing left to be seen now is where they finish in the season. At worst, they will cross over into the North Division. At best, they could finish 3rd in the West division.
