PRE-GAME RANT

Not many teams can bitch about injuries this year like the Oilers can. The Penguins can just based on having two elite players out of the lineup.. Malkin for the remainder of the season, and Crosby is very unknown (in fact his career is even up in the air). As much as people may hate Crosby, it’ll be a damn shame if the league loses another great player to concussion problems… especially before the guy even reached 24. Crosby’s injury is a tough one to prevent though, as to me it looked like accidental contact.

Anyways, enough of the headshot/concussion debate… the Oilers had a really tough loss vs. the Red Wings on Friday. I feel that the refereeing in that one was very one sided. The Oilers definitely were robbed of a win. I think they’ve got the legs to give the Penguins a run for their money. The Penguins are 3-3-4 in their last 10, while the Oilers are 4-5-1.

Prediction: 3-2 Oilers

PRE-GAME RANT

Wow does this team ever look horrible on paper. No offense meant to the players, but really, most of them in the lineup really aren’t meant for prime-time or are bottom tier players. Sam Gagner is the latest victim, after having a tendon in his hand severed by Jones’ skate. Gagner was sitting on the bench when jones accidentally stepped on it. I’m not even sure how that happens, but it did. This team is a skeleton crew and looks more like our AHL team should.

Prediction: Redwings 6, Oilers 1. lol

Headshots, Turnbuckles and Sucker Punches, oh my..

Chara introduces Pacioretty's face to the stanchion

So news last night was that Montrealers were flooding police lines with demands that the police investigate the Zdeno Chara hit on Max Pacioretty. Air Canada has also threatened to pull its sponsorship from the NHL if the NHL doesn’t take things more seriously with headshots, turnbuckle-rides and such. This ironically comes on the 7th anniversary of the Todd Bertuzzi mugging of Steve Moore, which is back in the news yet again.

For those of you who live in a cave, or who have been serving in whatever war/cause of the week out there and turn to “The Foil” for your major news (dumbasses!), Chara absolutely destroyed Pacioretty with a hit that sent him face first into the “turnbuckle” (the padded part of the glass partition at the end of the Bruins bench. Pacioretty had dumped the puck into the Bruins zone a second or two before Chara cut him off and sent him into the stanchion. Pacioretty laid on the ice, motionless and unconcious, for several minutes while the training staff looked him over and the stretcher was brought out. Chara received a 5-minute major interference penalty and a game misconduct for the late and dangerous hit. He received no suspension for the play. Meanwhile, Pacioretty suffered a severe concussion and a fractured vertebra on the hit.

OK, so let’s establish one thing… the hit was dangerous. Malicious? I suppose that is Continue reading 'Headshots, Turnbuckles and Sucker Punches, oh my..'»

Monday Morning Standings

By , March 9, 2011 9:04 am

Today I wanted to focus on some sports, so here is surfing.

GDT is located HERE

Just a reminder to those in the pools, the playoffs are starting soon. Only the top 6 teams make the main playoff part, however if you didn’t make that then there is still the consolation playoff to keep in mind. Also, super close in the pools for the next two weeks.

As for the Oilers, well Hall’s season is over. Dude was having a pretty good rookie season (Calder was an outside shot with Skinner, Couture and some rookie goalies in there) but he’s been the best chance for a Oiler Calder winner ever (although we all know Gretzky should have won).

In other news Hemsky got hurt (rotator cuff injury) and will be out for 2-3 weeks. Despite this, I still think he’s our best player and needs to be re-upped for another 3 years at a minimum.

In other league news Crosby still has a concussion (doubt we will see him back this year).

Gillies just came back from a 9 game suspension and proceeds to get a 10 gamer (on what I didn’t think was that bad of a hit at all).

Probert’s had his brain donated to medical study and it showed that he suffered from some brain damage. Question now becomes, how much of this was the fighting, how much was the hockey and how much was the lifestyle. Personally I think it has to do with the hockey, cause while bare knuckle brawling isn’t the best for the dome, I just think that the speed that the players are going and hitting each other, essentially with body armor on, can’t be good for the noodle.

Big news the last couple days is that the Coyotes might not be able to be sold (as it was depending on some crap to be sold which a government watchdog agency is saying isn’t cool). Wouldn’t be surprised to see the team move to Winnipeg here in the next couple weeks. (Thrashers are also looking for buyers…I bet Quebec can’t get that rink built quick enough)

And finally, everyone is talking about Chara’s hit on Pacioretty last night. Personally, don’t think its a bad hit at all. If it were to happen 2 feet further up, or 2 feet further down the ice then we wouldn’t be talking about it at all. I’m not even sure its actually interference either. But I am glad that dude is seeming to be OK.

On another note, I’ve been finding myself really enjoying Justin Bourne’s stuff at puck daddy, and therefore I shall recommend it to you fine people.

And now to the standings:

PRE-GAME RANT

well, the Oilers got their butts handed to them last game, after relying way too heavily on Dubnyk at the start of the game. After being outshot 17-1 and down 2-0 after 1 period, it was hard to stop the bleeding. The Oil did come out strong in the next two periods though, but it wasn’t meant to be. I thought the Oil even put on a penalty killing clinic in that first period too on Smid’s 5-minute major. They almost made it to the very end after really frustrating the Flyers.

Let’s hope that the Oilers can get off to a better start this game as they face the surging Capitals, who have won their last 5 games and are 8-2-0 in their last 10. The Oilers are decently hot, on their own, as they’ve won 3 of their last 4. They are 6-4-0 in their last 10, however.

Prediction: 4-2 Capitals
