Monday Morning Standings

By , March 24, 2011 8:41 am

Taking a brief break from my focus on sports, to bring the spotlight down on some ladies who have been getting rave reviews from players on twitter.

Bruins/Habs tonight. Should be fun watching Chara murder whoever pulls the short straw.

Well, the Oilers are limping towards their second 30th place finish ever. Players keep getting injured, although JFJ is now healthy again so we got to send some help back down to OKC. No point in keeping a useful player on this team when we have JFJ to play! Right now the best part of being an Oiler fan is twitter. Whitney is pretty funny, as is Terry Jones! I’ve also cut Tencer out of my twitter feed and couldn’t be happier.

And that’s it for Oiler news. Well, as far as I’m concerned.

In league news Cooke performed his patented flying elbow to the chin move, and the league suspended him for the remainder of the season and the first round of the playoffs. I loved this (not the hit, but the results). Basically it forced Lemieux to put up or shut up (the whole team really didn’t give a shit about head shots it seemed until Crosby went down) and it forced the league to actually do something. Now there is a precedent and future hits like that should have similar consequences. And I hate that fucker Cooke.

Ottawa signed Anderson to a 4 year deal, just over 12 mil. Seems steep, but Anderson’s played well the past two years so maybe it’ll work out.

Oh, and Malhotra is out for the season now with an eye injury. Makes me start to think about wearing a visor in my league. Yikes.

And now on to the standings:

GDT Oilers 0, Blues 4 – Game 74 – 2011-03-24 @ 6:00 PM MST – SNETW

So the Oilers have virtually sealed up 30th place now (although I think they did it a while ago). The chances of the Oilers gaining 7 points on Ottawa or 8 points on Colorado with only 9 games left are so pathetically low that we can accept again that we will finish 30th this year. Not much to say about this one, other than it is more showcase time for the youth such as Hartikainen.

Giroux has already been sent back to OKC, now that JFJ and Fraser are back. But Foster is also out. For those that missed the last game.. he got hit pretty hard and fell awkwardly backwards banging his head (albeit helmeted) on either the ice or the boards. I suspect he probably was concussed on that play. He didn’t have his legs at all when they were helping him off the ice. I can say he has been whipping boy #1 for me all year, but I hate to see anyone get badly hurt, so I hope he’ll be OK soon. He’s already had his one scary bad injury in his career.

Anyways, predicting another loss here…
3-1 St. Louis

GDT Oilers 1, Predators 3 – Game 73 – 2011-03-22 @ 6:00 PM MST – SNETW

The Oilers are driving on fumes now. I see the effort there, but really they just don’t have the right players in the line up to get it done. So tonight will again be about watching some youngsters. This time it’s not about Eberle/Paajarvi/Hall/Omark, it’s about Hartikainen and, to a lesser extent, Vande Velde. Hartikainen has been earning a lot of respect from Oilers fans for his gritty play. He also has a decent nose for the net too, it would seem. He recorded his first career point (an assist) against Phoenix a couple of games ago. I’m hoping we see a goal from him before the year is up.

Back to the usual suspects, Paajarvi has been a force as of late, now that it’s become obvious that there aren’t many other players on this team that can get it done. He notched an assist against Colorado in the last game, and a goal in the game before (Phoenix). But more notably, he had 8 shots against Colorado. The effort has definitely been there from him.

The Preds are on a 3-game winning streak, and have been a strong 6-2-2 in their last 10. The Oilers have struggled to win with such a young line up. I predict another tough one to watch tonight.

Prediction: 4-1 Predators

Oilers Meet and Greet for Season Ticket Holders

So, thanks to the girlfriend (Oilrsgrl77 for those that know her here or from the Oilers Message Board), I got to go to a special event for seasons ticket holders at Rexall today. The first part was a “meet and greet” where you could go around taking pictures with all the players. The 2nd part (which I enjoyed the most) was a Q&A between Jack Michaels and Steve Tambellini and Patrick LaForge. The two Oil brass were asked fan submitted questions.

Much to my surprise, the questions weren’t too bad. I submitted one (or OG77 did on my behalf) and it got asked/answered (I asked what ST and the Oilers can do to ensure that the Barons thrive while still making hockey in Edmonton interesting). To be honest, the answered seemed a bit roundabout, but I wasn’t expecting anything too mind blowing. Basically he stressed that Continue reading 'Oilers Meet and Greet for Season Ticket Holders'»
