This thing is going on today, starting at 1:00PM at West Edmonton Mall. I usually line up early each year, but this time around I’m stuck doing some work from home until noon. By then, I’m pretty sure the lines will be crazy long… so I think I’ll have to pass.

Anyone going?

PRE-GAME RANT

This afternoon the Oilers host the Atlanta Thrashers at Rexall (1:30PM start.. it’s an early one). The Oilers have been great in the two games since Steve Tambellini’s pep rally in which he told the players to stop worrying about the draft and just try to win. As much as I want us to get the number 1 pick, it’s great to see that they can turn on the “give a damn” setting at any moment. I expect another solid game today. Sounds like Dubnyk will get the start, from what I hear via Twitter, even though Khabibulin has been quite good the past two games (apparently his “give a damn” was switched on recently).

Prediction: 3-2 SO win for the Oilers.

PRE-GAME RANT

Hooray, HNIC on a Thursday! Too bad I’ll be playing walleyball… The Habs are in town tonight for a warm up match before playing the “Heritage Classic” down in cowtown on Sunday. The Oilers have taken the previous and only other game this season in Montreal, but needed a shootout to finish it. The Habs have cooled off and are nursing a few injuries, so hopefully we get the same effort we did on Monday and the boys impress. Horcoff had a big 3 point night to lead the team, time for another speech?

Monday Morning Standings

By , February 16, 2011 8:52 am

I've been watching Californication so she's been on my radar. Plus she was in Sin City and will be in Sucker Punch

The Oilers Win! The Oilers Win! Good thing Tambellini let them know he doesn’t like losing. Although in all fairness its sounds like a “Do what I say, not what I do” type deal. If you don’t like losing bud, make the team better.
In other news scouts are at our games. Oh, and Sportsnet forgot how to broadcast hockey.

In other league news, the Isles and Pens had a couple shit shows (although I may have mentioned the first one last week). Bunch of suspensions handed down. Boston and Montreal also had a great game where people got beat up, and lots of goals were scored. Whats with the huge scoring games now? Lots of games going to double digit goals (combining the two scores).

Trades have been happening lately too, much to the chagrin of the networks who planned an entire day around it. Mike Fisher to Nashville, Chris Kelly to Boston, Aaron Varos to the laffs, Beauchemin to the Ducks, Versteeg to the Flyers. Lots of talk about Penner and Hemsky being traded too, but I hope Tambellini knows better than to do that.

Thrashers extend Byfuglien, giving him 5.2 mil per for 5 years. Forsburg returned, and then retired. Heritage Classic Sunday…it’ll be neat, but less awesome than ours. But the Barons will be playing there the Friday before against the lames AHL team, and both of them are in the battle for 8th in the conference so that should be interesting. Not sure if its televised though.

Steve Tambellini… bumbling idiot, or man with a plan?

Bumbling idiot, or man with a plan?

Bumbling idiot, or man with a plan?

The Oilers are en-route to their worst season record in Oilers history. The pressure is on from the media, and even fans, to secure that top pick. Tambellini recognized that and delivered a speech to the team yesterday in which he encouraged the players just to win and forget about the pressure on them to hang on to that potential #1 pick (lottery aside). I’ve given Tambellini my share of licks, but I also think that there is an unfounded opinion that the guy is a bumbling idiot. I’m going to play devil’s advocate here and just say that I personally think that the guy has a plan.

The tough thing for us to understand is that GMs have 3-5 year plans. They’re thinking way ahead, while most of us are thinking of just right now. Almost all of us want the team to win now and be in the playoffs now… and if it can’t be now “then it better be next year!”. Unfortunately these things really do take time.

It’s hard to visualize Tambellini’s plan. He’s made his mistakes (like signing Nikolai Khabibulin to a ridiculous contract for a 35+ player), but I think the right intention was definitely there. Kurtis Foster was brought in to help with our defensive woes, and turned out to be a dud. Ditto with Colin Fraser. He has also made some good moves, such as Continue reading 'Steve Tambellini… bumbling idiot, or man with a plan?'»
