2011 Edmonton Oilers Skills Competition Highlights

Today the Oilers ran their internal, annual skills competition. Here are some of the highlights:

– Taylor Chorney was the fastest skater.
– Kurtis Foster had the hardest shot at 103.7.
– Sam Gagner and Tom Gilbert each went 4-for-4 in the shooting accuracy competition.
– Andrew Cogliano won king of the shootout, although there were a few dazzling shootout moves taken (see below for highlights). As expected, Linus Omark, Magnus Paajarvi and Taylor Hall each had some amazing shootout moves. I’m not sure which one I’d give it to based on entertainment value. I’d say Paajarvi or Hall though, because Omark’s came out of his existing bag of tricks while Paajarvi and Hall pulled off something we’ve never seen before and some incredible stick work. I’d probably give it to Hall just based on being able to pull the move off in tight.

Here are some video highlights:
Taylor Hall dribbles the puck up ice then tucks it in and out of his legs for a goal:

Magnus Paajarvi tucks the puck and stick through legs before going forehand backhand, flipping it up on the backhand and batting it in:

Linus Omark does his spin-o-rama move, followed by the looping arc over the sprawling goaltender:

Sam Gagner does his best Linus Omark impersonation:

Will put more links up as they come.

Interview with Shawn Horcoff and Ryan Jones after the Skills Competition:

Highlight of that video above is Horcoff making fun of the low velocity on Gilbert’s “muffins” in the skills competition: “They should have a speedometer on those too” and “those wouldn’t go in, in a game!”. Funny stuff.

Fastest skater competition:

Puck Control Relay:

Hardest Shot:

Shooting Accuracy:

Powerplay (why does this sound like a disaster in the making for all but the goalies?):

It says a lot about our powerplay that the closest forward line to being dominant was the line of Jones, Chorney and Jacques, followed by Stortini, Fraser and Big Mac. New powerplay lines (lol)? Teddy Pickman put on a defensive clinic, and Jeff Petry was no slouch either.

Typical Strudwick Hilarity:

Ryan Jones interviews Fred Chabot (pretty funny, and perhaps a post-NHL career for Jones..):

I love how Hall has that “yah it was no big deal” look to his face after scoring that goal.

    That was unreal!!

    More videos added.

Quote of the night from Jones: “It’s fun, it seems like a good event. These little thundersticks or whatever are loud as crap!” (in reference to those inflatable stick things that they hand out to fans for making noise).

Should have been a singing contest. At least Struds is well liked and keeps the guys loose.
