We don’t want to play there.. but you can stop blaming your ice now..

2011 Player Poll results have been published..

The 2011 CBC / NHLPA Player Poll results have been published..

So I’m not sure which is the greater myth… that Rexall Ice is the best in the league, or that Rexall Ice is the worst in the league. You’d have to figure that the players would be the best judge of this, it would seem. And that’s what several of them did in the 2011 CBC and NHLPA player poll.

As it is well known now, Edmonton was named #2 (#1 was the New York Islanders) least desirable team to play for right now… and rightfully so. The team is at an all time low, about to follow up it’s first ever dead last finish (in the 2009/10 season) with potentially another dead last finish. But, it appears that Continue reading 'We don’t want to play there.. but you can stop blaming your ice now..'»

PRE-GAME RANT

Happy birthday to Wayne, happy birthday to Wayne, happy birthday dear Wayner, happy birthday to you. Happy 50th big guy!

Now that’s out of the way, let’s see what we’re in for tonight. Dallas Stars again…

There have been some chippy games recently between the two clubs, so look for a spirited affair tonight. Adding to the Stars’ angst they’ve been outscored 14-5 in their last two games, so hopefully the goaltending woes continue and the Oil have a big game before going into the break.

Back to Wayne, share your thoughts in the comments on some fond memories of the glory days. A few stick in my mind that weren’t all that glorious. I remember a line brawl in one game when Wayne was on the ice. Everyone had a dance partner and Wayne’s opponent respectfully pinned him to the ice and just held him there while everyone else started the lawn mowers. Another big moment in Wayne memories happened post trade and involved another Oiler. Kelly Buchberger laid Wayne out with a vicious elbow while Gretzky was with the Blues. Someone has to post some happier memories below.

PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers head on a short road trip with stops in Phoenix and Dallas before the Hemsky/Eberle-less All-star break. The Oilers have been on a horrible skid, allowing the Devils to catch up in standings. We currently sit 1 point higher in the standings (albeit with 1 game in hand). The Oilers are 2-7-1 in their last 10 while the Coyotes are 6-3-1 in their last 10. The Oilers have been playing some better hockey than their record would suggest, but when you’re a team this young, it’s hard to get over that hump that is the difference between a loss and a win in most games in today’s NHL. I think they’ll win this one though

Prediction: 4-2 Oilers

PRE-GAME RANT

Again, the Oilers face another team that have a polar opposite last 10 record. The Oilers are 2-8-0 in their last 10, while the Predators are 8-2-0. The last Oilers loss, against Dallas, was a tough pill to swallow as the Oilers came flying out of the gates and looked to be in it all the way up to the 3rd period where the Stars came out to shine.

This should mark the return of Jim Vandermeer, BTW. He was playing some great hockey when he went down to injury, but I hope he can pick up where he left off. Sounds like Dubnyk will get the start, as Khabibulin missed the last two practices with an “unknown ailment”. That will likely give the Oilers a better fighting chance, the way both of these guys have been playing lately.

The Predators are a strong team right now, and have some great goaltending, so it’ll be a tough one to win.

Prediction: 3-2 Predators (SO)

Oilers assign Taylor Chorney to OKC

By , January 22, 2011 3:35 pm

Taylor Chorney returns to OKC. Take that, you show-boating, fastest skater…

General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have assigned defenceman Taylor Chorney to Oklahoma City of the American Hockey League.

Chorney, 23, was recalled to the Oilers on December 10 and played in six games collecting two assists.

The 6’0”, 193-pound Thunder Bay, Ontario native has appeared in 40 games with Oklahoma City scoring three goals and adding 12 assists.

I would think that means Jim Vandermeer is back. Never thought I’d be saying this, but, thank god!
