Canada Canada – 8 FINAL Switzerland Switzerland – 0
WJHC 2011 Pre-competition Game 1
Canada were silver medal winners in 2010
Switzerland were 4th place in 2010
Date: Dec 20 @ 5:00 PM MST

Well here it is.. this is something I look forward to every year. My Christmas isn’t actually Christmas and opening presents, but the World Junior Hockey Championships. I absolutely love this tournament. As far as I’m concerned, there is no better hockey to be seen at any time during the year than this tournament. These kids lay it all on the line during this tourney. It’s fast, it’s physical, and it’s just all around entertaining, serious hockey. The kind of hockey that would upset the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Swiss have some returnees from last year, of course, with the biggest names being goaltender Benjamin Conz (who wooed many with some unorthodox, yet strong goaltending) and Nino Niederreiter, who wasn’t even on most peoples’ radars before the tournament but quickly became a household name afterwords by his incredible work ethic. Conz is undrafted and will look to make a case for that, but Niederreiter is of course already drafted, going 5th overall at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Islanders. Look for him to shine again this year for the Swiss.

For Canada, there are four returning players – Team Captain and defenseman Ryan Ellis (Nashville Predators), defenseman Calvin de Haan (New York Islanders), defenseman Jared Cowan (Ottawa Senators), and forward Brayden Schenn (Los Angeles Kings).

Don’t forget, this will be your first chance to watch Oilers goaltending prospect Olivier Roy in action at this tournament (EDIT: oops, actually that is tomorrow’s game vs. Sweden) I’m pretty hopeful for him. Also, we’ll get a chance to see Curtis Hamilton who is tearing it up for the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL so far this year (31gp, 15g – 27a, 42pts).

Prediction: 2-1 Switzerland.. giving Canada its first scare of the tournament early on 😉

Let’s go boys. Hit the groung running as the Russians are only 6 days away! Roy starts tomorrow against the Swedes. here’s hoping he is the starter.

  2. Racki says:

Oops, thought Roy was in tonight.. my mistake. Anyways, lines are updated above too. Also, Hamilton is currently stashed somewhere on line 4.. so not expecting to see him much tonight.

  3. Racki says:

Sorry folks, I forgot to turn the GDT chat on before I left work.. not sure if anyone was going to be around for this one anyways, but its turned on now.

  4. matt says:

it’s ryan ellis no dan ellis!

  5. Racki says:

Matt: lol, that was a total brain fart actually.. thanks. I tend to make a half dozen typos and other mistakes that get corrected by the other two writers, but that one somehow slipped through. I somehow managed to get that one right in the picture title tag (hover your mouse over the pic), but goofed up later on. Dan Ellis would have less problems if he was Ryan Ellis.

  6. Racki says:

KASTLES asked in the GDT chat if Cizikas had any points (sorry, I’ve closed the game chat, so I’ve answered it here):

The answer is yes, 1 goal and 1 assist. Stats have been added above.
