PRE-GAME RANT

The Oilers return home tonight after the Christmas break and will face the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres have dropped their last two contests (including a recent 5-2 loss to the Flames) and are 4-5-1 in their last 10. The Oilers are in a similar state, having gone 4-4-2 in their last 10.

Tonight’s game marks another first for a promising prospect. Jeff Petry has been called up and will play tonight. No word on who he will be paired with but I suspect that with Gilbert out, we should see Petry a decent amount tonight.

With these two team’s struggling, and how the Oil generally like playing the Eastern teams, I’ll call this one a win that gets them back on track for the short term.

Prediction: 4-2 Oilers.

Canada faces the Czech Republic for game 2. The Czechs finished 7th in last year’s tournament and won their first Preliminary Round game of the tournament (2-0 over Norway) on Monday. Canada also won their opener, a 6-3 victory over the Russians.

Olivier Roy will get the start again in goal for this game. He got appeared to get off to a tough start, but was pretty solid when the Canadians needed him to be, and made 24 saves on the night. This one comes as a surprise to me, as I thought with Vandermeer skating he’d be back soon. But maybe because of the holiday roster freeze (and just general niceness of not wanting to pull Petry away during Christmas) they waited. I am excited about this call up, as I have a lot of expectations for Jeff Petry to be a good defenseman one day. It’ll take some time though.

PRE-GAME RANT

Well this is good news, Hemsky, Vandermeer, and Brule took part in the morning skate although there will be no changes to the line up from last game. Promising news none the less. We’ll be battling the back up tonight with Schneider getting the start. Canucks have a lot of options for offence so hopefully a good team defensive game will be played to limit the amount of rubber sent Khabi’s direction.
