PRE-GAME RANT
The Oilers return home tonight after the Christmas break and will face the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres have dropped their last two contests (including a recent 5-2 loss to the Flames) and are 4-5-1 in their last 10. The Oilers are in a similar state, having gone 4-4-2 in their last 10.
Tonight’s game marks another first for a promising prospect. Jeff Petry has been called up and will play tonight. No word on who he will be paired with but I suspect that with Gilbert out, we should see Petry a decent amount tonight.
With these two team’s struggling, and how the Oil generally like playing the Eastern teams, I’ll call this one a win that gets them back on track for the short term.
Prediction: 4-2 Oilers.

Petry apparently is going to play with Whitney for this one. Not sure where Strudwick slots in. The Oilers twitter said that Gilbert and Peckham were paired up, but my understanding was Gilbert’s knee was injured (and thus why Petry is in), so there is a chance he won’t really play.
Hemsky is also in, it sounds like. He played with Penner and Cogliano. Not sure what that means for Omark though.
Brule also skating. I forgot he was even out (Flu).
Edit: updated with today’s practice lines, per Tencer.
Tencer also reports that Brule has been placed on IR, retroactive to December 20th.
Cogs pivoting Pens and Hemmer… oh boys *shakes head*. Horcoff ppppplllllleeeeeease come back soon.
I am excited to see Petry. Let GIls sit out. Even if he (gilbert) CAN go, it doesnt mean he SHOULD. Gilbert has been improving lately. I dont think you take a chance of making anything worse. That goes for Hemsky as well… hopefully hes not been rushed back. This is the first yearthat I have enjoyed watching Hemsky. He had been playing with authority and i hope that continues.
