You want a shot at the title?

The belt actually looks more like Hulk's fluffy sash thing..

The 2nd annual Putting On The Foil pool is about to kick off, folks. Spots are limited (12… 14?). Anyone is welcome to join, although because I like to know whose ass I’m kicking, slight priority will be given to regulars of the foil and people who were in last year’s pool. But don’t let that deter you from signing up though, if you are a lurker.

Gr8one did a fantastic job of organizing it last year, and has volunteered (or been voluntold?) to do it again this year. Thanks, gr8one! If it’s similar to last years, expect it to be a Yahoo pool involving a draft. Once the season kicks off, you’ll have to set your lineups for games each night. Sounds like a lot of work, but you can do it all a bit in advance. My recommendation is to pick one night a week, do the whole week at once, and then tweak your lineup as needed each night. You will be able to perform trades with other GMs as well as waive and pick up players on waivers. Last year was a lot of fun, but more so for me, and not for all you sissies that lost. *flexxx*

Soo, how do you join?

Well, feel free to post a comment in here if you like, but to join:

Send an e-mail to contact@puttingonthefoil.com (<- click link) with your screen name on Putting on the Foil and stating that you would like to join the pool (both are important) and I will then forward it off to gr8one. Simple as that. Some of you have expressed interest in other threads, but I need an e-mail from you because that e-mail address will be what gr8one uses for his invites.

I’m in and this year will be mine!

Who would also be up for making this a keeper pool (i.e. we keep 3 or 4 players from this roster to carry over to next years?).

  2. gr8one says:

Yeah, I don’t mind the keeper league idea at all.

Also, I was maybe thinking about manipulating the goalie stats a little to try and make it a little more balanced scoring wise, and make it so that goalies don’t have such a big influence on the outcomes of weeks.

I was thinking maybe just doing away with one of sv% or GAA category or something. Thoughts?

Also, I have the ability to add categories like hits and/or blocked shots, so if you guys want to weigh in on that just let me know here and we’ll just go with majority rules.

Not sure why anyone thinks the this years title will be anyone’s but mine…

Racki only beat me by a nut hair last year and I ain’t gonna let that happen again!!!!!

we need a trophy of some sort I think…maybe some foil knuckle dusters mounted on a plaque or something.

  3. Smokin' Ray says:

I’m in. I’ll try and remember to send an email later today.

  4. Racki says:

Yah, gr8one.. goalies were way too much impact last year, so that’s a great idea to limit the usable stats in some way. What area all the stats we had last year for goalies? Is Wins, Sv%, Shutouts too much?

I’ll see if I can figure out a trophy of some sorts for this too. That’s an awesome idea. :) I think Hulk Hogan’s feather duster around his neck is a good trophy…

  5. Steve-O says:

I like the idea of hits and blocked shots added (makes d-men/3rd liner more valuable, therefore can have a deeper pool).

As for the goalies…I think I got screwed enough with picking Luongo in the first round when he decided he was going to shit the bed this last year.

The thing I didn’t like about the goalies was that you could have a outstanding night, get your 1 win, 950 sv%, 1 gaa and shutout and then bench everyone the rest of the way…you wouldn’t win the “wins” column but the others were a lock.

  6. gr8one says:

OK, so I set the league up.

If you were a part of it last year and were an active manager you should have an E-mail in your inbox(whichever email you signed up with last year) requesting you to rejoin. Priority will be given to those players.

If you were a part of last years league and do not have an email, that is because you were not an active manager and often didn’t update your rosters, and we want active managers.

Not to be a pool nazi or anything, but one or two inactive managers can really make a league suck, so if you’re not committed to spending an hour or so a week to make adjustments and such, please don’t ask to join, especially this year because it looks like a high demand to be part of it. It’s ofcourse for fun, but AWOL managers can quickly take away from the fun for the league as a whole.

I also left out my wife and another friend of mine who was in last years league so as to give priority to regulars of POTF, and I also increased the league numbers from 12 to 14, and if I remember correctly 7 invites from last year plus myself were sent out, so that would leave 6 more empty spots, assuming everyone from last year re-joins.

Other than upping the players from 12 to 14, the league setup is exactly the same as last year, but I can make changes right up until the draft if we agree on any tweaks that we want made.

Also, I just randomly picked a draft date/time for Sunday, October 3rd at 10pm EST, or 8pm Edmonton time. This can also be changed very easily to accommodate as many as possible, but with 14 people there will inevitably be people unable to make it, and if that’s the case you will be able to set pre-draft rankings and set it to auto draft so you can still get the team you want.

So, other than that, I can’t think of anything else to say at this time other than last season was awesome fun, and I look forward to this season!

  7. Racki says:

Agreed with Steve-O on the SV% and Gaa making for a way to lock in 2 stats if you happen to have a goalie have 1 good game. On that note, I guess my suggestion would be Wins and shootouts only? Perhaps saves too? I don’t know. But the sv% / GAA stats are a bit bogus in the pool.

Gr8one: sounds great about the pool set up. Thanks a lot man. And I think Oct 3 @ 8MST is a good time. We’ll change it only if it turns out lots of people can’t do it. But barring that, I’d say leave it as is.

  8. gr8one says:

Steve-O: The thing I didn’t like about the goalies was that you could have a outstanding night, get your 1 win, 950 sv%, 1 gaa and shutout and then bench everyone the rest of the way…you wouldn’t win the “wins” column but the others were a lock.

yeah, that’s a really good point about the goalies. I believe there is actually a setting that I can change to make it a minimum amount of games played for goalies in a week and set it to say a 2/3/4 game minimum. That way the goalie stats don’t count unless that many games are played.

and I ~THINK~ that minimum applies to your goalies as a whole, not each individual goalie has to play that many games.

If we did that I’d have to think that 3 games would probably be happy medium, since lots of managers like to only carry two goalies and if those two goalies share goalie duties on their team and a team only has two or three games a week it actually might be difficult to get more than three games in any given week…if that makes sense. lol

  9. gr8one says:

Ok, so I just added blocked shots and hits. And set minimum games played for goalies at 3. I also took out SV%, and now goalie stats are GAA/WINS/SO(Shut Outs). It seems to me that should be good, I really can’t see taking out GAA and Wins, and shut outs should be rewarded as well. It should take away from easy goalie dominance, but still keep a little bit of the balance in a goalie favor if they have a tremendous week, but that’s just like real hockey, no?

Anyways, I can change it all back if consensus decides it doesn’t like the changes.

Also, I was thinking of maybe adding one more offensive category like PP goals? whatcha ya’ll think about that?

  10. Racki says:

The minimum games (as long as its for all goalies combined) passes with flying colors, by me.

As far as other stats, I like the hits and blocked shots as well. PP wouldn’t be bad. What all do we have available? FO%? Can I pick Horcoff in the pool???! (kidding)

  11. gr8one says:

I can’t do it right now, but I’ll try later this evening to list out all of the available stats/categories we can add.

I do know that FO% is indeed one of them though. I think if we do add anymore it shouldn’t be any more than just one more category(if any).

By the way, with hits/blocked shots added you all should go take a look at Stephane Robidas stats last year. He was a beast stat wise, and I’d have to think after looking at his stats, he just might be one of the most underrated players in the NHL.

  12. gr8one says:

Oh yeah, couple of other things…

We can also adjust rosters as well, as in number of centerman/wingers/defenseman playing, number of bench spots, number of IR spots, etc, etc…

I thought last year was pretty good regarding all that though, but just want to throw it out there in case anyone has any has any good ideas regarding changing that.

and lastly(for now, lol) I can also add a co-commissioner I believe, are you(Racki) or Steve-O or Trogdor interested in that?

I totally don’t mind being the only commish so don’t feel like any of you have to, I’m just thinking you might want to.

  13. Racki says:

    I was only kidding about FO% ;)

But might be interesting to find out what else we can add.

I’d be interested in co-commissioner, sure. Does it afford me ability to force my ridiculous trade ideas to work or scam points from other people? Seriously though, I’ll help… might be good to have a hand if you go on vacay or something.

As far as the positional slots, I did like what we had last year. Definitely no need to expand, but if we wanted more players, we could shrink down the positional slots. Just an idea there.

  14. chucker says:

In!! I missed out last year. :( Also, I saw an article on Yahoo that adding blocked shots to the D-man stats makes them more valuable. I’d like this in there for stats please. Most times D-men are rarely changed out on the times I’ve played Yahoo pools because they are fairly level producers, but the blocked shots makes you think about guys you might otherwise not.

Anyway, my two cents. Just let me know the date and time so I can book it off in my schedule please.

EDIT: Sorry gr8one. I just saw that you already added this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKUOB8MN4Kc

  15. Racki says:

Send e-mail to me, chucker, per the post

  16. chucker says:

    Done.

  17. gr8one says:

Ok so Chucker and MrGod2U have been additionally added so far.

Racki, not sure what you’ll get first, this or the email I just sent you, but I’ll ask here again anyways.

So far nobody has responded/re-joined to the initial invite email sent out, di dyou receive that e-mail, and if so can you join and make sure that it’s all working correctly?

and also, I could have swore that I saw a way to add a co-commish but it seems that I cannot. I’ll look again later and still try and post all the category options we have available to add if we so choose.

  18. Mr.Majestyk says:

Okay, count me in too I guess.

I think having Goaltender stats should include Saves as well. Just some weeks a guy will get 3 decent starts from his tenders and not dress them the rest of the week. If both Saves and Wins count, it encourages managers to continue to dress their goalies for the entire week. Also, it balances out the value of someone like Dwayne Roloson or another goaltender on a lesser team because they might not win as many games, but they face plenty of shots.

  19. Steve-O says:

i didn’t get the email i’m thinking because yahoo mail shuts you down after 4 months…and i don’t use it for anything else

i can get you my hotmail to send the league id and password

  20. Racki says:

Worked for me. I goofed up though when signing up, I think, so will do it from work tomorrow.

  21. gr8one says:

Good points Mr.M…although adding that defeats the purpose of taking out SV% as it puts goalie categories back up to 4.

Maybe add Saves but take out one of the other stats, and if so…which one?

    Thoughts on that guys?

So far the only ones actually signing up(properly :p) are me, MrGod and Johnny O’Dangles(who is that btw?).

Steve-O, just send me an email to bcory_74@yahoo.com and I’ll send you out a request.

  22. Steve-O says:

    Interesting Story

Edit: I should say interesting regarding Souray

Edit #2: Ah shitballs, just noticed that Racki was all over this and put something up about it.

Edit #3: Fucknuts, thought I was in general discussion

  27. zackman35 says:

Count me in! Looks like a lot of fun and bragin’ rights…

  28. Racki says:

Yes, but only for me. You pansies will have a great time fighting for #2.

  29. gr8one says:

Racki: Yes, but only for me. You pansies will have a great time fighting for #2.

says the guy who won on a bogus tiebreak rule. :p

  30. gr8one says:

    Mr.Majestyk:
I think we need to put some restrictions on player movement as well.I briefly looked at the setup and I think it has unlimited waiver moves for the season and per week. When that happens you can just keep dropping and adding guys every night so that you have a full roster in the lineup the entire week, which usually adds up to bigger totals. Not saying I’d drop Ovechkin for the average guy thats playing the next night, but some of your roster players will become expendable.

Yeah, a restriction like that generally makes the most sense in an open public league where you don’t know the other players, and there can inevitably be douchebags that try to pull that stuff. But really, the amount of planning it can take and not wanting to drop players, plus going to the end of the line of the waiver pecking order order should be enough to deter managers from doing that in a fun league with friends.

I think it takes two days for a player drop/add to become active on your roster and it takes some careful planning once you factor in the wait times, players schedule, and just not wanting to lose the players you have.

Once the playoffs hit, and especially the final “series” you will often see that kind of movement between the last two managers, but it usually just adds to the strategy fun factor, and still not that big of a deal because just the way everything works out it usually just ends up being a couple of players added/dropped for it to make any sense for the managers.

BTW, for those of you that weren’t in the pool last year, Racki and I had an EPIC battle in the finals and he took a very well deserved victory on a tie break rule. He really did deserve the win since he pretty much led the league the entire season.

  31. Racki says:

    gr8one:
says the guy who won on a bogus tiebreak rule. :p

You had no business being there anyways. I was in first place for almost the entire pool. That should account for some sort of bonus points anyways. :P HAIL TO THE KING, BABY!

edit: Oops… just saw your message above, which pretty much makes my faux-bragging look like I’m an a-hole. But I’m cool with that, loser! (kidding)

(p.s. thanks for playing moderator and bringing the topic back over here)

  32. Racki says:

Seriously though, that definitely was an epic battle at the end. Being able to scrape for players on waivers (which we both did) also made it fun. You know I saved my #1 overall waiver for the entire pool?

  33. gr8one says:

    Racki:

lol, now that was hilarious my friend.

and no, I had no idea you saved that waiver spot, that’s actually really impressive. fucker. :-P

  34. Racki says:

I was waiting for the right opportunity to use it, and it really never did come. I guess waivers are nowhere near as important as I thought. Most guys you pick up seem to be free agents anyways.

  35. gr8one says:

yeah…waivers are bit more important at the beginning of the year because there are always those players drafted that don’t play up to expectations, and then there are the ones that come in and surprise and weren’t drafted. Once all those players are scooped up, it usually just doesn’t make much sense to use waivers much unless you have an injury.

  36. LateNightOilFan says:

Ok – still deciding. Everyone’s comments are confusing the hell out of me. Is there a Fantasy Pool for Dummies instruction link somewhere?

  37. Racki says:

Just submit your $5 fee, pick a few players, and let us handle the rest ;) (kidding about fee)

  38. gr8one says:

LateNightOilFan: Ok – still deciding.Everyone’s comments are confusing the hell out of me.Is there a Fantasy Pool for Dummies instruction link somewhere?

lol, if I can figure it out, anyone can!

Really though, it’s not that bad…and if you decide you want to give it a whirl, I can help you with anything you don’t understand or have issues with. DO IT!

FYI though, there is a “shirts off for Horcoff” rule, everytime Horcoff scores, everyone has to submit a shirtless picture of themselves, but really, if you’re shy and worried about it, what re the odds that Horc ever scores? lol :p

obviously kidding on that one too…you really should try it though(the league, not taking your shirt off).

  39. chucker says:

Okay, my team is a homeage to Jules Winnfield of Pulp Fiction. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_tbKQ0wS34

If that’s not cool then I’ll change it to chuckerspuckers.

Alright, done, email has been sent. I’m IN – don’t know what I’m getting INTO, but I’m in. And I’m keeping my shirt on!

    lol, that’s awesome!!

    LNOF: Woot!!

Just waiting on Racki to forward the request to me LNOF, but if you’re anxious to get signed up and he doesn’t get a chance soon to get it to me, you can just email me direct if you want @ bcory_74@yahoo.com.

Either way though, you’ll get an email inviting you to the league that includes a league I.D. and password, once you’re all signed up(this goes for everybody) if you have any questions, just ask!

  42. Mr.Majestyk says:

Beware, I might be that guy that picks up and drops 20 guys per week lol. The one I was in last year limited the amount of waiver pick ups to 3 per week.

  43. gr8one says:

Yeah, I guess I can add that, it won’t hurt because nobody else will be doing that. But if you’re dropping more than 3 of your roster players a week and staggering it so that it’s beneficial, you are A) spending way too much time on a fun league, and B) very likely doing just as much harm as good to your team. lol

  44. Racki says:

    gr8one:

OK I have forwarded off Boston Oiler’s and LNOF’s requests

3 waivers per week sounds good. If you’re waiving any more guys, chances are you’re getting schooled by me anyways. *flex* *brags* *trips on swelled head*

How many spots we have left in this btw?

  45. Mr.Majestyk says:

So we’re definitely going with the blocked shots, and hits stats in the pool? That will be interesting, I’ve never payed real close attention to those stats, but yahoo usually does a pretty good job of keep track of the stats.

  46. gr8one says:

hmmm, 8 official managers so far, once BO & LNOF join it’ll be up to 10, and there are still some others that invites have been sent out that haven’t joined yet.

Mr.M, yeah those stats are locked and loaded! I’ve never played with those stats either, should add a whole new dimension, I’m looking forward to it.

Oh btw Racki…who is the YDNAR fellow?

  47. Mr.Majestyk says:

Those stats might make a guy like Anton Volchenkov more valuable. Or Steve Staios!

  48. Racki says:

YDNAR is a poster on the Foil here. Hasn’t posted a lot, but is seen around here from time to time ;)

Smokin’ Ray’s e-mail address forwarded off.

P.S. How many hits does Jason Smith have this off-season? ….. too soon? *bazinga!!*

  49. gr8one says:

    lol…

    ok, so…Smokin’Rays’ invite sent out.

I’m thinking we should probably do a soft cutoff now. Give a couple/few days for people to get a chance to respond/join, and then if they don’t and there are still openings we can open it back up.
