Well, today marks the day that Putting On The Foil officially opened the doors and started plaguing the internet. In this post, we look back at some of our favorite moments in that past year, mainly because there is nothing better to talk about! So with out further ado, here are some of our favorite moments, as well as some interesting statistics…
To start, here are the top 10 posters on the site, without including Racki, Steve-O, and Trogdor:
gr8one (1351), LateNightOilFan (1044), MetalOil (861), Bostonoiler (792), chucker (762), DropIt (515), zackman35 (372), Mr.Majestyk (367), Hockey Noob (285), Haboiler (274)
Let me just say that we sincerely appreciate having you guys around (as well as even anyone who just makes one comment.. those of you hiding in the woodwork that haven’t commented yet, come on out!). gr8one, you almost deserve some sort of award (I say almost, because we’re too cheap for that.. but maybe we can create an award called the Gr8one Post-whore Award). Gr8one and Hockey Noob helped come up with a few good ideas in the beginning to improve the site, so thanks for that. And thanks also to Zackman35 who has also made some great suggestions over the past year too (as well as anyone else that I may have forgotten!).
The most commented in post was GDT – Oilers 2, Flames 5 – Oct 24, 2009 – Game 10, with 254 comments. This was the next Battle of Alberta game after Jarome Iginla’s sloppy hit on Sheldon Souray on a dump in.
The number one non-GDT (Game Day Thread) post was the Canada Day / Free Agent Bonanza post from this year.
The top poll question was “Which Olympic Hockey team looks best on paper?”. Canada led the voting with 314 votes, followed by Russia with 161, USA with 80 and Sweden with 37… (the rest didn’t add up to much).
Here are some of POTF’s “firsts”:
The first person to join the site that wasn’t someone we didn’t know in the real world was Gr8one (joined up on August 3rd). Darkness is the first user to the site that we do know in the real world. Other long term users that signed up in the first week of “business” are: Hockey Noob, staneyoil, Boston Oiler, DropIt, Samus, Chucker, OilerzCounty83, Mr. Majestyk, and OilerTyler (thanks all, and to the guys who signed up last year for your long term “dedication”!).
The first REAL post to the site (i.e., excluding our welcome post) was “Finally, it’s over…” about the Dany Heatley saga. Hockey Noob, of Low On Oil, was the first ever commenter on the site and posted the first non-staff comment in this thread too.
The first ever Putting On The Foil comic (by Trogdor) was in jest of the Patrick Kane cab incident, here.
Here’s the pic of the first ever Monday Morning Standings girl… a tradition started by Steve-O.
Here’s my favorite user-submitted picture – an MS Paint rendition of how Khabi fights dehydration, by Gr8one.
And here is a whole schwack of some of the funnier pics we’ve created ourselves for the site:

Some of our favorite posts:
One of our favorite, yet very random posts was a contest we ran for the 3 of us known as the “Quinnulks/Quinzilla” (using MS Paint to make Pat Quinn look like the incredible hulk or godzilla).
Also, the Christmas edition included a Edmonton Sun (or is it Edmonton Journal) like Christmas wishlist for the Oilers.
A couple of posts that garnered attention from non-regular fans were:
– Dispelling Myths: Are top-3 picks a crap shoot?
– Nikolai Khabibulin’s New Mask – brought in over 10,000 viewers thanks to a link from an ESPN blogger.
As far as serious posts, Steve-O’s “Break it Down” series was a good set of articles on his thoughts on our roster at the start of the season.
In Dispelling Myths: Dustin Penner, Dustin Penner was pointed out to be a more useful player than fans were thinking at the time. At the start of the season, there were all sorts of talks about trading Penner just to be rid of him.
Khabibulin Mask Decrypted pointed out all the different things hidden in Rekhabibulin’s mask.
Here are a few terms we coined over at the foil, a couple actually are in regular circulation now: Quinnulk (the mythical, angry Pat Quinn), 20-cent (in reference to Patrick Kane), Re-khabi (although it looks like they were calling him this in Tampa too), Quasimodo (Steve-O’s term for Dion Phaneuf), J4D (Trogdor’s term for the combination of Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers’s bottom of the ice skills and Devan Dubnyk’s ability to cover only the top of the net).
Feel free to tell us some of your favorite posts/comments/pics/whatever in the comment section. And thanks to everyone who’s stuck with us for the full year, and thanks to those too who joined in midway through the year. Hope to have you guys all posting here as well for years to come.
