Putting On The Foil Turns 1

Happy birthday to us.. Happy birthday to us...

Happy birthday to us.. Happy birthday to us...

Well, today marks the day that Putting On The Foil officially opened the doors and started plaguing the internet. In this post, we look back at some of our favorite moments in that past year, mainly because there is nothing better to talk about! So with out further ado, here are some of our favorite moments, as well as some interesting statistics…

To start, here are the top 10 posters on the site, without including Racki, Steve-O, and Trogdor:

gr8one (1351), LateNightOilFan (1044), MetalOil (861), Bostonoiler (792), chucker (762), DropIt (515), zackman35 (372), Mr.Majestyk (367), Hockey Noob (285), Haboiler (274)

Let me just say that we sincerely appreciate having you guys around (as well as even anyone who just makes one comment.. those of you hiding in the woodwork that haven’t commented yet, come on out!). gr8one, you almost deserve some sort of award (I say almost, because we’re too cheap for that.. but maybe we can create an award called the Gr8one Post-whore Award). Gr8one and Hockey Noob helped come up with a few good ideas in the beginning to improve the site, so thanks for that. And thanks also to Zackman35 who has also made some great suggestions over the past year too (as well as anyone else that I may have forgotten!).

The most commented in post was GDT – Oilers 2, Flames 5 – Oct 24, 2009 – Game 10, with 254 comments. This was the next Battle of Alberta game after Jarome Iginla’s sloppy hit on Sheldon Souray on a dump in.

The number one non-GDT (Game Day Thread) post was the Canada Day / Free Agent Bonanza post from this year.

The top poll question was “Which Olympic Hockey team looks best on paper?”. Canada led the voting with 314 votes, followed by Russia with 161, USA with 80 and Sweden with 37… (the rest didn’t add up to much).

Here are some of POTF’s “firsts”:

The first person to join the site that wasn’t someone we didn’t know in the real world was Gr8one (joined up on August 3rd). Darkness is the first user to the site that we do know in the real world. Other long term users that signed up in the first week of “business” are: Hockey Noob, staneyoil, Boston Oiler, DropIt, Samus, Chucker, OilerzCounty83, Mr. Majestyk, and OilerTyler (thanks all, and to the guys who signed up last year for your long term “dedication”!).

The first REAL post to the site (i.e., excluding our welcome post) was “Finally, it’s over…” about the Dany Heatley saga. Hockey Noob, of Low On Oil, was the first ever commenter on the site and posted the first non-staff comment in this thread too.

On Putting On The Foil’s The Wall site (where you can post your own stuff), our first ever poster there was also Hockey Noob, with his article titled Pat Quinn’s Edmonton Oilers, on October 17, 2009.

The first ever Putting On The Foil comic (by Trogdor) was in jest of the Patrick Kane cab incident, here.

Here’s the pic of the first ever Monday Morning Standings girl… a tradition started by Steve-O.

Here are the top-3 MMS girls, since we couldn’t come to a consensus on that (in no particular order):

FAVORITES

Here’s my favorite user-submitted picture – an MS Paint rendition of how Khabi fights dehydration, by Gr8one.

And here is a whole schwack of some of the funnier pics we’ve created ourselves for the site:

Favorite captions (click link for pic that the caption was for):
“Tambellini trying to explain that he can’t do anything because of the dipshit to his left.”
“MacTavish asking Schremp if he’s any good at any other sports.”
“Guess which one is the Oilers and which one is the ticket buyer.”
“This shit looks pretty complicated, he gets my vote.”
“Good luck parking in this mofo.”
“‘Who’s got 2 thumbs and got fucked by MacT last year…. thissss guuuy!!!'”

“See, no underwear lines. Thongs rule!”
“I would still brag about it win or lose…although I thought he won it?”
“One might think the ‘Pubis Whatever’ and that thing above his lip are related, but not so..”
“Holy shit…”
“Here is a picture of the Oilers powerplay from the row 6 seats I was at.”
“If you only knew, lady… but he was legendary once..”
“A vicious polar bear attack from downtown Edmonton”

Some of our favorite posts:

One of our favorite, yet very random posts was a contest we ran for the 3 of us known as the “Quinnulks/Quinzilla” (using MS Paint to make Pat Quinn look like the incredible hulk or godzilla).

Also, the Christmas edition included a Edmonton Sun (or is it Edmonton Journal) like Christmas wishlist for the Oilers.

A couple of posts that garnered attention from non-regular fans were:
Dispelling Myths: Are top-3 picks a crap shoot?
Nikolai Khabibulin’s New Mask – brought in over 10,000 viewers thanks to a link from an ESPN blogger.

As far as serious posts, Steve-O’s “Break it Down” series was a good set of articles on his thoughts on our roster at the start of the season.

In Dispelling Myths: Dustin Penner, Dustin Penner was pointed out to be a more useful player than fans were thinking at the time. At the start of the season, there were all sorts of talks about trading Penner just to be rid of him.

Khabibulin Mask Decrypted pointed out all the different things hidden in Rekhabibulin’s mask.

Phrases coined

Here are a few terms we coined over at the foil, a couple actually are in regular circulation now: Quinnulk (the mythical, angry Pat Quinn), 20-cent (in reference to Patrick Kane), Re-khabi (although it looks like they were calling him this in Tampa too), Quasimodo (Steve-O’s term for Dion Phaneuf), J4D (Trogdor’s term for the combination of Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers’s bottom of the ice skills and Devan Dubnyk’s ability to cover only the top of the net).

Feel free to tell us some of your favorite posts/comments/pics/whatever in the comment section. And thanks to everyone who’s stuck with us for the full year, and thanks to those too who joined in midway through the year. Hope to have you guys all posting here as well for years to come.

lol…well, let me post whore some more!

wow, a year huh? It actually seems longer…but yeah, I love this site, thanks for having it…it’s almost like we have our own little Oilers family here.

What it really tells me though is I need to get a life…and a job!

  2. Racki says:

Hell no, that wasn’t meant to deter you from posting. Trust me, it’s appreciated. Without people post-whoring it up, this site and other sites would be a barren wasteland. Trust me, my post count is somewhere around 3 or 4x as much as yours here, so don’t worry ;)

But really, I’d like to see more guys at the bottom trying to catch up, than you guys at the top slowing down!

P.S. your khabi beer-hat-hydration-thingy pic still makes me laugh.

  3. gr8one says:

lol, I didn’t take it that way…and trust me, I likely won’t be slowing down any time soon!

  4. Haboiler says:

Congrats gang on a great first year! I thoroughly enjoy the folks on this board that allow us to have a healthly debate without all the trolls! Lets all hope we have a better season in Oil Country, but I admit this site made last year at least bearable. Cheers to POTF!!!

  5. Smokin' Ray says:

Congrats on the 1 year!!! I always read but usually never comment. Sorry… I’ll do better this year. ;)

Love the stuff here and this is one site I don’t mind telling people to read because I know they won’t be disappointed. POTF is one of the greats. Cheers to another solid year!!!

  6. Racki says:

Hey Ray, love your blog too.. you’ve been doing some good stuff with the OKC Barons info and have brought a few things to my attention on that (and also the John Madden news too). I am just as guilty of reading and not commenting a lot there too, so no worries ;)

Edit: Actually, I just tried to comment there, but looks like I can’t. Our stupid work filter blocks pretty much everything flash. Looks like whatever your blog uses to post (presumably flash) is blocked by our filter. Bummer! Anyways, awesome news about SportsnetOne!

Btw, Smokin’ Ray’s blog is here:

    Oilers Jambalaya

Haboiler: thanks for that! Quite frankly, that non-troll mentality just says a lot about the quality of people who visit here. I think in the entire year, I maybe had to “lay the smack down” MAYBE 3 times? Very troll free so far. *knock on wood*

  7. victoriaoilerfan says:

Well I am opening the champagne as I type. Congrats on your first year Foil fellas! I have only started here recently but have enjoyed the conversation. Great bunch of fans! Heres to a great year 2!

  8. Ktown says:

Any excuse to drink is good enough by me!

Happy 1st! In BC, the drinking age is 19, so I can’t pour you one, but no worries, I’ll drink enough for both.

  9. LateNightOilFan says:

Happy B-day POTF folks! Thanks Racki, Steve-O & Trogdor for all your hard work – this blog came about at just the right time for me as I had pretty much had it with the changes to the OMB last summer and the lack of real conversation there.

This site was a breath of fresh air in Oil Country and I really enjoyed it all year long (I had no idea until now how many posts I had!). Even though there weren’t always a lot of us on the GDT it didn’t matter because the level of conversation was soooo much better compared to the OMB!

Always enjoy everyone here and being able to have a good respectful debate. It was a tough year for the Oilers but I’m looking forward to the new season and spending it with everyone here – in spite of being almost 4,000km’s away!

    Congrats!!

  10. Mr.Majestyk says:

What the frack, only 367 posts?! I’m gonna have to step it up guys.

In all seriousness, I’m glad to be a Foil’er. Such a great group of people posting here, it makes it fun to be an Oiler fan even when the team stinks.

PS. The hottest Monday Morning Standings chick was definitely ScarJo.

Anyone that watched Youngblood wants no part of the ‘smackdown’ from you Racki.

  12. Chappy says:

Let me be the twenty-ninth to say congrats, Racki!

The best times are best to come. Let the good times roll!

  13. gr8one says:

Hey Chappy, I was checking out your blog and such and saw that you’re in Greensboro? I just gotta say it’s pretty kickass to see another Oilers fan in NC! I live on the coast just south of Wilmington, but my wife went to Salem College up in your neck of the woods…I love that part of North Carolina.

  14. Racki says:

    Thanks everyone!

  15. Hockey Noob says:

Hey everyone! Congrats to the 1 year landmark for the POTF blog!

The Khabibulin hydration helmet was legendary. Too bad we didn’t know sooner that it was filled with Vodka. ;-)

You guys have done a great job with this blog.

Off topic–>I’m pretty amazed at the number of roster changes we’ve seen. Who could have predicted that we’d get so much bad salary off the books?

As for the POTF blog, who could have predicted that you would launch your blog before one of the worst seasons in Oilers’ history? Yet, you guys stuck through which shows character and fan loyalty for sure.

I’m getting excited again for this upcoming season. There are still roster issues, but there’s no way this season can be as painful as last year’s. Here’s to turning that corner…

Congrats again Racki, Trogdor and Steve-O!

  16. Racki says:

Hey Noob, good to hear from you again, and thanks! Shouldn’t be much longer until you guys at Low On Oil can celebrate the same milestone too, no? I’m not sure if it was a bad time for us to start up or not.. at least it allowed us to work out some kinks before potentially getting a larger fanbase, I suppose! :P

  17. Bostonoiler says:

Damn, a whole year. I love the site. Great work guys and congrats on a whole year of this stuff!!! Seems like the best of the OMB moved here lmao

  18. Bostonoiler says:

I just caught my first look at the hydration helmet lol. Thats a classic

  19. chucker says:

Congratulations guys. I think this site saved me in terms of sanity and being able to discuss things with people who have brains. It was perfectly timed with the OMB meltdown to KickApps.

Dreadfull season, but I always enjoy coming here. That’s what she said. Anyways, it’s nice to see a bunch of buddies work on something that they also really enjoy, and it does show that you enjoy it. That’s what makes it a good experience for me.

    Top five. Not to shabby.

BEGIN!!! Year two is upon us.

  20. NorwegianOiler says:

Good job on keeping the site up to date, interesting and dynamic all the while so far!

The site is right about the most steady and consistent in the Oilers world – we can only hope the team does as well ;)

Best Monday chick was quite obviously that Canadian news anchor whose name escapes me.

  21. dawgtoy says:

One of my favorite sites to visit. Happy Birthday!

  22. Steve-O says:

NorwegianOiler: Best Monday chick was quite obviously that Canadian news anchor whose name escapes me.

Ah yes, but not Canadian good sir. French I believe. Can be found under the “Holy Shit…” caption link.

Well, hehe, Canada’s loss then I suppose. You still have Elisha Cuthbert (nevermind her taste in blokes) and Evangeline Lily though.

  24. Puritania says:

I’ve been a ghost around here lately, but as busy as I am and as slow as the summer is I thought I’d give you Racki, Steve-O and Trogdor a well deserved Congratulations on the big O-1

When my shit slows down or hockey season starts creepin’ up, hopefully I’ll be around more :)

Congratulations are in order for the regulars as well, back pats and hugs all around.

  25. zackman35 says:

Woooh! Happy B-day POTF, it’s not as busy right now but I’m sure things will pick up late September again! I haven’t been posting as much but I still love coming here a few times a week to look around. There’s a great bunch of regulars who post on this site and I hope they remain here.

Maybe a few ideas can come to fruition like our hockey game (or layouts in my case). It would be good to start planning ASAP picking a date where everyone can maybe make it/take off time to come play for a few hours.

    Congrats POTF!

  26. Mr.Majestyk says:

I’d also just like to come up with my own caption for the Bruce Lee photo.

“Step 1: Cut a hole in the box…”

  27. Racki says:

    LOL Mr. M… nicely done.

For those that don’t get the joke:

sure wish I was on a boat.

  29. MetalOil says:

Happy belated 1st year POTF. This is a great site!!!
