Happy Canada Day Folks...

Happy Canada Day Folks...

So, here it is, July 1st… one of the more fun days in the NHL world – the first day of the free agency period (starts at 10PM EST today).

As with every year, there are several players out there that are available through the UFA market. The Fourth Period has compiled a list of the top 30 available UFAs, most of which would be of no interest to the Oilers though. But there are others out there…

The Oilers could really use some of those gritty glue players, however, as well as a shutdown defenseman and possibly another puck mover (or preferably a combination of the two). Zbynek Michalek is said to be about to make a decision between the Coyotes offer and testing the market. Agent Bill Zito also mentioned that clients John Madden and Adam Burrish will likely test the market as well too, since Chicago really has minimal cap available.

Will Tambellini continue this hot week, or will there just be a lot of smoke? One thing is for certain, we won’t be going after the big gun this year (Kovalchuk). Thank you for finally learning that lesson. We can now retire the recruitment video.

Anyways, discuss the goings on of the free agent bonanza here. I’ll be away for the first hour or two of it, as I’ll be off at Ikea buying a wall unit to house the awesomeness that is my new receiver, and other things.

    Racki,

What receiver did you end up getting?

and Kurtis Foster and Shaone Morrison still available!!

  2. Racki says:

Gr8one: I got the denon AVR-591.. was $479. Loved that Onkyo you got, but I think it was a couple bills more.

I just looked up Morrison fights on youtube. He doesn’t seem all that tough to me? Am I missing something?

  4. Bostonoiler says:

I would like at least one signing today.

  5. Racki says:

Wow, I just got up to today’s events.. if these are the deals that went down, I’m glad we haven’t been involved. Although I would have given Zbynek Michalek $4M too.

  6. Racki says:

Haboiler: I want us to sign a shutdown Dman but I really hope we don’t pay $5M for Hamhuis or even Volchenkov.

$5M for Volchenkov would be worth it, imho. I’d be happy with that. Not for Hamhuis though. $2-3m maybe..

  7. gr8one says:

    Vic:
lol…I don’t want him for his pugilistic skills, I just think he is a good solid physical shutdown type d-man that’s still young and should be good value. And I want Kurtis foster and his booming shot/pp quarterback skills to replace Souray at 1/3 to 2/3 the cap hit.

We’d have a fantastic, big, well rounded hard to play against D.

And then sign Scott at < a million to pound some skulls in.

  8. Bostonoiler says:

    Ray Whitney to the Yotes……

  9. gr8one says:

And nice receiver Racki, lotta value in that, and can’t go wrong with Denons.

  10. gr8one says:

    Great signing for the ‘Yotes.

  11. Racki says:

Oh damn. I know we weren’t interested, but I like Whitney and wish we could have gone after him. Good pick up for the Yotes. 3M per isn’t too shab for him.

  12. gr8one says:

oh, and I’d give Volch 5m too, and Michalek I agree is a good value @4m per.

I also think Malhotra was a bit of an overpay, but man he makes a Van team that was already hard to play against even harder, if They land Hamhuis or Volch, and with the dismantling of Chicago I’d have to say they become the favorites to represent the West next year. I feel dirty saying that, but thta’s a solid looking roster.

yeah, especially over just 2 years.

  14. Haboiler says:

Uh oh… Dreger speculating big Georges may be an option for us…

  15. Bostonoiler says:

Haboiler: Uh oh… Dreger speculating big Georges may be an option for us…

I’d take big george for a year or 2. I still love him hahaha

  16. dawgtoy says:

Lowtide signed a contract with Oilersnation to deliver 20 blogs a month for them. A very good signing for ON IMHO.

  17. Racki says:

Haha, Big Georges.. hmm… I’d have to say no, but at least he can play hockey a bit.. too bad he still probably thinks he’s a goal scorer rather than an enforcer (thus why I’d say no)

  18. MetalOil says:

Big George’s name is starting to be mentioned for the Oil. Can’t say that this makes me too happy but i would not be too upset ether. At least he would come cheap.

  19. Bostonoiler says:

Remember Big George is still getting paid 1 mil by the Habs cause of the buyout. We could get him for somewhere under a mil. Laraque would stand up for our youg players, and he can still play hockey. He wasn’t bad in MTL, just really overpaid.

  20. gr8one says:

Yeah…I wouldn’t hate it if GL signed with the Oilers if he was able to find a bit of a mean streak. I recently saw an interview with him and he said straight out he was going to be playing with a chip on his shoulder and with something to prove, which is the only reason I’d be OK with having him….as long as it’s for a million or less.

  21. Bostonoiler says:

Sounds like Big George will be back in the west, but the Oil have yet to offer.

  22. MetalOil says:

Hey I want Souray gone as much as the next guy but unless the trade makes sense then we would be best off holding on to him in hopes that he can come back healthy and contribute then trade him. It seems like he has relented somewhat on his comments from earlier this summer about needing to be moved from Etown. Lets just not get ripped off here.

  23. Haboiler says:

Stauffer just said Georges is going to get $1M a yr…. pass

  24. victoriaoilerfan says:

Racki: Haha, Big Georges.. hmm… I’d have to say no, but at least he can play hockey a bit.. too bad he still probably thinks he’s a goal scorer rather than an enforcer (thus why I’d say no)

I would say no as well. Somewhere it seems George found religion, and wants to be a saint.

  25. Bostonoiler says:

    I WANT BIG MAC!

  26. victoriaoilerfan says:

    Bostonoiler: I WANT BIG MAC!

    Is Sutton still available?

  27. MetalOil says:

John Scott has not signed yet!!! that would be a better option I think.

  28. gr8one says:

haha…apparently Jokinen might be signing w/ the Flames again, which brings me to my pick for “Tweet of the day”

    adater
@SunGarrioch Jokinen and Tanguay back to Flames? Is this an SNL skit?

  29. Bostonoiler says:

LOL Tanguay and Jokinen back??? JOKE

  30. Haboiler says:

3.5M per yr for 2 yrs for Jokinen lmao

  31. gr8one says:

    lol…poor DropIt.

    sorry buddy.

    R.I.P. Darryl Sutter career.

  32. MetalOil says:

@SunGarrioch Jokinen and Tanguay back to Flamers? Is this an SNL skit?

Looks like it was a great idea for that team down south to keep the Sutter’s :) how are they gonna retain White??? I can’t wait to see how Flame111 on the OMB is gonna defend his hero GM on this one :)

  33. Bostonoiler says:

Why is the Sutter brother circus still running that team

  34. gr8one says:

lol…ok, I was wronf about that being the Tweet of the day…

    this one is…

    Erin Nicks
I’m going to assume Sather & Sutter are on a package tour in Scotland, & are making their calls from a Glenlivet distillery.

    lololol

  35. Bostonoiler says:

    OIL SIGN KURTIS FOSTER

  36. Haboiler says:

    Foster!

  37. gr8one says:

    Bostonoiler: OIL SIGN KURTIS FOSTER

woot, one down, one to go…let`s bring in Shaone Morrison now!!!

  38. victoriaoilerfan says:

I was just thinking out loud. The horrible contract the Sather gave Boggey actualy makes Horcoff’s look decent lol

  39. Bostonoiler says:

Foster, Gr8one, please tell me is he shutdown?

  40. Haboiler says:

Great price at $1.8 a yr for 2 yrs.

  41. gr8one says:

lol…no, Foster is not really shutdown, big shot, big body, good PP qb.

    http://www.forecaster.ca/thestar/hockey/player.cgi?2137

  42. gr8one says:

    and he’s a RHD.

and fuck I want to kick Pierre MacGuire in the teeth.

  43. Haboiler says:

yeh totally disagree that 1.8 is a huge overpayment for him…

  44. Bostonoiler says:

Sad story with Foster. Lost his baby about a month ago.

  45. dawgtoy says:

Now imagine Souray stays, the PP could potentially kill someone with the bombs from the back end.

  46. DropIt says:

great signing for Edmonton in Foster… apparently they were in on the Olli Jokinen sweepstakes

  47. Bostonoiler says:

    No thanks on Jokinen

  48. DropIt says:

victoriaoilerfan: I was just thinking out loud. The horrible contract the Sather gave Boggey actualy makes Horcoff’s look decent lol

sorry… but nothing makes that contract look decent

  49. Haboiler says:

    Hamhuis to Van city

  50. Haboiler says:

Foster on TSN…. sounds excited to be coming here…
