Happy Canada Day Folks...
So, here it is, July 1st… one of the more fun days in the NHL world – the first day of the free agency period (starts at 10PM EST today).
As with every year, there are several players out there that are available through the UFA market. The Fourth Period has compiled a list of the top 30 available UFAs, most of which would be of no interest to the Oilers though. But there are others out there…
The Oilers could really use some of those gritty glue players, however, as well as a shutdown defenseman and possibly another puck mover (or preferably a combination of the two). Zbynek Michalek is said to be about to make a decision between the Coyotes offer and testing the market. Agent Bill Zito also mentioned that clients John Madden and Adam Burrish will likely test the market as well too, since Chicago really has minimal cap available.
Will Tambellini continue this hot week, or will there just be a lot of smoke? One thing is for certain, we won’t be going after the big gun this year (Kovalchuk). Thank you for finally learning that lesson. We can now retire the recruitment video.
Anyways, discuss the goings on of the free agent bonanza here. I’ll be away for the first hour or two of it, as I’ll be off at Ikea buying a wall unit to house the awesomeness that is my new receiver, and other things.

Gr8one: I got the denon AVR-591.. was $479. Loved that Onkyo you got, but I think it was a couple bills more.
I just looked up Morrison fights on youtube. He doesn’t seem all that tough to me? Am I missing something?

Wow, I just got up to today’s events.. if these are the deals that went down, I’m glad we haven’t been involved. Although I would have given Zbynek Michalek $4M too.
$5M for Volchenkov would be worth it, imho. I’d be happy with that. Not for Hamhuis though. $2-3m maybe..

lol…I don’t want him for his pugilistic skills, I just think he is a good solid physical shutdown type d-man that’s still young and should be good value. And I want Kurtis foster and his booming shot/pp quarterback skills to replace Souray at 1/3 to 2/3 the cap hit.
We’d have a fantastic, big, well rounded hard to play against D.
And then sign Scott at < a million to pound some skulls in.

Oh damn. I know we weren’t interested, but I like Whitney and wish we could have gone after him. Good pick up for the Yotes. 3M per isn’t too shab for him.
oh, and I’d give Volch 5m too, and Michalek I agree is a good value @4m per.
I also think Malhotra was a bit of an overpay, but man he makes a Van team that was already hard to play against even harder, if They land Hamhuis or Volch, and with the dismantling of Chicago I’d have to say they become the favorites to represent the West next year. I feel dirty saying that, but thta’s a solid looking roster.

Haha, Big Georges.. hmm… I’d have to say no, but at least he can play hockey a bit.. too bad he still probably thinks he’s a goal scorer rather than an enforcer (thus why I’d say no)
Big George’s name is starting to be mentioned for the Oil. Can’t say that this makes me too happy but i would not be too upset ether. At least he would come cheap.
Remember Big George is still getting paid 1 mil by the Habs cause of the buyout. We could get him for somewhere under a mil. Laraque would stand up for our youg players, and he can still play hockey. He wasn’t bad in MTL, just really overpaid.
Yeah…I wouldn’t hate it if GL signed with the Oilers if he was able to find a bit of a mean streak. I recently saw an interview with him and he said straight out he was going to be playing with a chip on his shoulder and with something to prove, which is the only reason I’d be OK with having him….as long as it’s for a million or less.
Sounds like Big George will be back in the west, but the Oil have yet to offer.
Hey I want Souray gone as much as the next guy but unless the trade makes sense then we would be best off holding on to him in hopes that he can come back healthy and contribute then trade him. It seems like he has relented somewhat on his comments from earlier this summer about needing to be moved from Etown. Lets just not get ripped off here.
