McKenzie’s Final Draft Rankings
Just a heads up, but Bob McKenzie’s final draft rankings are up, and there is fantastic stuff up there. As lowetide says, this guy knows his stuff.

Pysyk looks like a stud in this draft, unfortunately for the Oilers, they will need to trade for him as he won’t be falling to 31. I think in 4-5 years from now Brandon Gormley will be the best player coming out of this draft not named Hall or Seguin
Alex Petrovic may be available tho, he is worth a look at 31st.
That pick of the B’s at 15th is real valuable, I wish we could get our hands on it.
I agree on Petrovic. He’s under rated as far as I’m concerned.
I was impressed with Gormley’s interviews. The kid is extremely mature. Whoever gets him will have a very good D man. Tinordi moved up a bit. Not surprised.
Seguin=Stamkos. Man, that’s hard to pass up. I’ve been wondering about Hall’s style as well. I love the kid, but he’ll have to adapt for sure and does that make him as valuable. Likely yes, but it’s cause for concern.
What about Ottawa’s pick at number 16? They probably still have interest in Cogliano. Even if we could trade Cogs for a D prospect like Karlson or D-man Brian Lee.

Here is a conversation Metal&Oil and I had on the Oilers board about drafting Seguin and what our two top lines would/could look like.
I also posted some comments about our D and getting some you BIG talent in for the future.
Metal&Oil Quote:
If we draft Seguin
Penner-Gagner-Hemsky
MPS-Seguin-Eberle
In my opinion the Seguin lines look better and more balanced.
Victoriaoilerfan quote:
I like Seguin lines as well. Put Mcilrath (our Phaneuf with brains but we need B’s 15th to have that possiblity or the Serns. 16th) on the back end and pick up a few gritty guys for the 3 and 4th foward lines (Asham types) and this team is really starting to look like a bunch that is going to be hard to play against in a few season when they get some experience.
Goaltending is still and issue IMO, but we will deal with that.
P.S. and O/T.
Lets see if we can draft this guy with our 31st if we can’t move up.

Then deal Souray to the Sharks and get our hands on this guy:

We have a future D:
(Petrovic/or Mcilrath) Petrecki/Smid/Gilbert/Whitney/Peckham (plug in your picks here) Solid Scary tough D
The more I think about it, the more I think we are pretty ok on defense going into the future.
I think we all tend to forget about Plante, whom I think is going to turn out to be a damned fine NHL defender, he’s huge(6’5/220) has a great shot and has some offensive upside and is said to be good in his own end as well. He also plays physical.
I like Peckham a lot too, and so did most fans until he got derailed last year by injury issues…they may not be ready this year…Chorney has great puck moving potential, and Petry is another one with decent size, plays a good shutdown role and is a good skater.
I think between them at least one, maybe two will turn into a really good NHL D-man.
Smid, Whitney, and Gilbert are all still young…I think if we signed a couple of mid range vet D-men for 1-2 year contracts and can draft 1 mid to high end prospect this year, our future D looks pretty damned awesome.
We also have Motin, Hesketh and Bigos in the pipe that could develop into0 something too.
I don’t think we can go wrong here, but I’m starting to drift toward Seguin again. That Stamkos comparison is hard to pass upm but Hall is an UNREAL goal scorer too….I want the #2 pick…
yah, I don’t share the same faith in our d-men. Someone else quoted here (or maybe elsewhere) about how someone in the Detroit org (the GM?) says one in every 5 prospects you think are good actually pan out (paraphrased a bit). I am a bit worried about Chorney. Peckham is decent, but he’s got a long way to go still. Plante, ditto there. Smid, he’s come a long ways, but he’s still also got some work to do. Basically everyone on our blue line, with exception to maybe Whitney, has some question marks. Nothing wrong with building up some extra assets there.
We do have some decent talent in the works though. If I had to guess, I’d say that Petry, Peckham and Motin will all be regulars… it’s just a matter of figuring out to what extent.
It isn’t a necessity, I suppose, but it sure would be nice to have a Pronger (again) in our system. Minus the dickhead part, of course. Someone who inspires confidence back there. Right now, of all the names you mentioned, only Whitney inspires confidence in our own zone (Gilbert and Smid included.. they don’t do it yet, although they may some day).
So basically in a long winded way, I’m saying our d-corps looks nice and has potential, but the unfortunate thing with potential is it can go either way.
Here is some good news for those of us that want to get that 15th pick from the B’s. It is available for the right price.

So Chiarelli says that the Oilers and Bruins are not close on any potential trade as of now but did say that it could still happen. He also said that the Bruins are not opposed to moving that #15 pick, not necessarily to the Oilers though.
Here is another story on this. This one sounds a little bit more optimistic that something might get done between these 2 clubs!!!

Btw, Steve-O.. if this site ever starts having ads and making money, I’m going to pay you by the letter, just to save money.
@ Racki:
Rutherford had an intersting comment regarding drafting D men. He said he hates doing it becuase by the time they are NHL ready they are UFA’s

Comcast sportsnet New England article. Looks like the two sides talked, but nothing major occured.

haha, well the sad thing is, yes, most take forever to develop. Although there are definite exceptions to that rule.. see: Drew Doughty. I wonder who this Larsson character is comparable to.
Racki wrote:
I dont know anything about Larsson and he is hard to get much infor on. He is tall and skinny at this age and doesn’t appear to be very physical, yet a good puckhandler. Why did his name come up?
He’s the #1 prospect (at the moment) for 2011. And 201 lbs isn’t something I’d consider skinny for an 17 year old (220 lbs, depending on your source..).
He’s the hype-du-jour right now, being touted as better than Hedman. But I usually take that all with a grain of salt, this early in the game. From what I understand though, he actually is a physical player and capable at both ends of the ice. Always nice, in a d-man, to have all 3 of those aspects (good offense, good defense, good physical game).
Just got in. Good conversation @ Metal and Oil and Vic. It makes sense to me, and quite frankly, I’m more comfortable with either guy at this point and was a Hall at all cost guy before. I think both sides of the equation are great and Seguin’s, with a trade down, may be the full house on the river we need.
McIlrath is rated pretty high now. I wonder if he’s available at 15. I guess if not I’d focus on Tinordi personally.
If we can trade down or make a deal to still pick at no. 1, get Boston’s 15th and take Seguin and get a decent player back like Coelburne or Krejci (Krejci seems to be in lots of rumours), then it really makes me think we should do it. Especially keeping in mind that we will be likely getting another great guy next draft and for Souray as well.
@ Racki:
Duh! I had the wrong Larsson. I couldn’t understand the interest as he is already the Yotes property.

You got a link to this draft prospect?
@ chucker:
Do you ever get the feeling we are being pressured into taking Hall?
The consensus is that we should and Boston wants him so badly that if we don’t take him we are going to look foolish. I really hope that Tambi gets some deal done with the B’s to let them have Hall. I just have the sense that they want Hall real bad despite playing it cool in the media.
Of course we could always take Hall and make a deal during the draft for a switch and a trade. Could we not?

Here is a blog about some other 2011 prospects. Etem is mentioned but is in the draft this year.
http://thepipelineshow.blogspot.com/2010/01/top-5-tuesday-2011-draft-watch.html
Yah ha, sorry, I should have mentioned his first name. But yes, Adam Larsson is the guy. If we draft him, I would be very excited about the prospect of making several “Grand Larsson(y)!” headlines each year. Too bad he isn’t a goaltender.
Anyways, interesting how Guy Flaming’s contact mentions that Larsson is going to be better than Hedman (Mr. “The Next Lidstrom”). Wow… to have that pick, hey? Lucky Boston (TML pick)… oops… the year hasn’t started yet.
