PRE-GAME RANT
Before we start in on Oilers talk, let’s just kick this GDT off by giving thanks to the hockey gods for the Flames being eliminated from making the playoffs last night. Last place in the league doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Welcome to Oilers purgatory, Calgary. That’s that place where you claw at 8th place in hopes of making it in, but often end up just missing it (and thus getting a crummy pick in the draft). I don’t think they’re quite at the “blow up the team” stage like we were yet, but I think the future looks a bit brighter for the Oil (for once). Sadly, you have to hit rock bottom in this league to be able to build a strong team sometimes.
Anyways, the Oilers play their last home game tonight vs. the Avalanche at 7:30 on Sportsnet West tonight. The Avalanche clinched their playoff spot last night with a squeaker over Vancouver in a 3-2 win. The Avalanche have won just 3 of their last 10 games (3-6-1). The Oilers came off a pretty good performance vs. the Wild on Monday in which they won 4-1. They are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games. Dustin Penner scored his 30th and 31st of the season and looks to add on to it, saying he will be aiming for 35. What a great season for him it has been, and a bitter sweet one, in his own words.
The Avalanche are 3-2-0 in the season series vs. Edmonton so far, including the last two wins (3-0 February 6th and 6-0 January 18th). However, I’m going to predict a win for the Oilers tonight.
Prediction: 5-4 Oilers.

Colorado Avalanche 4
It would not call any pick in the first half of the first round crummy however the Flames do not even own a first rounder this year. They gave it up to an already stacked Phoenix team in last years deadline day deal to acquire Olli Jokinen (LOL). If memory serves me correctly they do not pick until the 3rd round as it is now.
Yes that’s true, it won’t likely be a crummy pick, but there is more chance that it won’t be anyone that will come in and help out in any big hurry.
And wow, that sucks (for them) that they don’t pick until that late!!! Ouch.
Yeah the Calgary Flames’ second-round pick will go to the Chicago Blackhawks as the result of a trade on July 1, 2008 that sent Rene Bourque to Calgary in exchange for this pick. I am not sure if they own another teams 2nd rounder but I do not think they do. Being up against the Cap with a declining superstar(up for debate) and with no picks until round 3(2 picks in this round) means that the Flames are in some serious trouble. I expect them to make a trade or two to move up in the draft(possibly trading Iginla) as well as cleaning house in the coaching and management ranks.
Hmm, if the Flames go for the house-cleaning trade-fest at the draft I think they could contend with the Oilers for most short-sightedness since the lockout. Trading for the Toronto Maple Leafs, then missing the playoffs should not be much of a surprise, but proceeding to trade for underperformers with extended contracts just to hold a firesale less than a year after? The Stajan contract, for example, would make little sense in that perspective. Then again, they’re running out of options, just as fast as they have been running out of patience with their roster.
Calgary had their core of skill and should have been a contender the 2 years after the lockout. Those days passed them by and they will need a rebuild. Alternately they could stick with a single coach long enough for a system to stick. If they aren’t going to play musical coaches yet again, they may need to break up their core further. I don’t think Kipper and Iggy are responding anymore. Calgary has no excuse for missing the playoffs this year. This was one of their strongest teams ever on paper and they blew it big time, that falls squarely on their on-ice leadership who simply failed to show up all season especially when the season was on the line. In my opinion they should trade Iggy while his value is high.
Horcoff for Iggy, straight up.
Oh wow, this sucks.. lol 2-0 pretty quickly
Wow – I’m not watching yet. Who’s in net?
Wow missed 10 mins and down by 2… not good…
Just turned it on when they were facing off after the first goal, and bang. 2-0. JDD’s in tonight.
JDD might not be in much longer…
Not a great start by any stretch, hopefully a comeback like they have been used to lately.
I’m busy replying to a nitwit thread on the main HF Board about whether the NHL & NBC will be disappointed if the Oilers draft #1. I can’t believe I’m wasting my time but I couldn’t resist.
1 back. Earn those millions Horcs!
Instead of Toronto? I mean Boston.
3-2! Penner with another!
Atta boy Penner and nice pass by Gilbert.
Wooooo penner makes it 3-2! and its a game..
Yes Boston is presented as the alternative due to better marketing.
Jeez is the first period even over yet? Gonna be a barn-burner?
Well, it was looking like a stinker, but nice to see a comeback of sorts in the works. Wife can’t have the TV yet.
Yay Penner again!
3-3! Comrie with a goal. Maybe Horcoff with the deflection.
Racki should eat a dick for grabbing Penner off waivers in our pool playoff finals.

lol
haaha asshole!
Hey everyone! Wow, I’ve been super busy this past month. Haven’t blogged since the 5th of March.
lol @gr8one.
cheers everyone!
I don’t usually get the Oilers feed. Finally they got a fan who can hit the net! (Not that I could do any better).
Cogs!! Congrats to Penner – 30-30 club!
30-30 for the big man… nice shot Cogs!
Nice pass by the big man !!!
That goal was all Penner. Playing big and drawing everyone to him. Very nice.
And we’re tied again. Not a pretty one, but it counts.
Wow, what a chance for Penner and Comrie at the end!
What a finish to the 3rd! I thought JDD was going to give it away like Khabbi in the home opener. Then Pens to Comrie and nice save by Anderson.
Wow the chances! Gilbert is posessed!
Holy crap Budaj…
Nice to see they’re trying to avoid a shoot out
Yeehaw!!!! OT Goal!
Fun game to watch tonight.
Penner should get a star tonight. Good game by the big man.
pssst…Budaj
Who just got scored upon!!
OVERTIME WINNER!
Wooooooo Whitney
Well in the last home game they go out in style. Total domination in that overtime!!!
I can’t help but think that we are looking at our future captain in Whitney.
That was a fun game (well the half that I saw, anyway.) Nice win for the fans to end the home portion of this forgettable season.
What a game! Penner had some Joe-Thornton-with-more-will-to-win moments there
But, is there ever a game where Louie Debrusk does NOT use the phrase “Johnny on the spot”? He ought to re-invent himself…:P
There’s a few guys who are captain worthy here. I still say Horcoff is one (much to the chagrin of many), but Whitney would also be a good one. Wow, how about Gilbert, hey??? He was all over the offensive zone.
I do not think Whitney will be the next captain. I am thinking 3-4 years down the line he might be wearing the “C”
