PRE-GAME RANT
Well, this is a game Canada might need after a tough loss to the US. This SHOULD be an easy game in which they can get their systems in order, and should be light work for Luongo. Yes, Luongo. He’ll get the start in this one, according to Daren Millard’s Twitter. Many people seem to be calling for Brodeur’s head, but I think there was more wrong in that game than just him. It was marred by badly timed penalties (are there good-timed penalties?), as well as a poor, poor play by Corey Perry in the final minute that really hampered a possibility of a comeback.
And well, I hate to take any team lightly, but if Canada loses this one, they really deserve to be out of the tourney. They should win this one, and they should win it by a solid margin as well. I’ll predict a 6-0 victory for this one. Hopefully it’ll give the team a bit of confidence that they will need going into a tough game on Wednesday vs. the Russians. I may be counting my chickens before they hatch, but if the Germans win this one, it’ll be a miracle on ice bigger than the U.S. defeating Russia in 1980. Stranger things have happened though.

POST-GAME RANT
Well, take this one with a grain of salt, as it is just Germany, but the Canadians looked like a much better line, especially for the top line of Crosby, Staal and Iginla. These guys are a heck of a force. Luongo played as solid as you could hope he would. Weber, Doughty, and Keith drew gushes from the panel, and rightfully so. Can they carry that into the game vs. Russia? That’s a good question. We’ll find out tomorrow at 5:30PM, MST.

Canada 8
Germany 2
I don’t think this will be a cakewalk, but you’re right; Canada needs a statement game.
I don’t really blame Brodeur for the loss, but I think most would admit he didn’t have a very good game and looked bizarre at times in trying to do too much in my view. He used to be fantastic with the puck. His trapezoid rule clearly killed those skills. Too bad.
I expect Luongo to be stellar. I just need him to imagine he’s playing the Flames or something and we’ll be fine. I am very concerned about our lack of ability to score on the PP. Mike Green or even Dion Phaneuf are looking like they would have helped this team a lot. Pronger and Niedermayer got the veteran entitlement spots here for sure. They have been horrid. I expect to see a lot less of them and more of Keith and Seabrook.
As for the forwards, wouldn’t it be nice to see Smytty playing with Morrow out there? This team needs to find the passion they did in the last 2 minutes of that game at the drop of the puck and keep it dialed in. What’s nice is that the Germans will be a good team to play as they are sound in all areas and not a pushover.
I’d say we will likely win with a score of about 6-2.
Also, “Jumbo Joe” needs to figure out he’s a big son of a bitch and not play the perimeter. I know that’s the story of his career, but all I’m asking for is one tournament that he uses his size and doesn’t play like he just smoked a big spliff of B.C. budd.
Looks like Staal and Iggy to hook up with Crosby tomorrow. Might be a decent line, interested to see how it turns out.
Chucker: agreed on Jumbo Joe. It was pretty sad seeing him get knocked around off the puck. Not sure how it can happen to a guy that big that much.
As for the top line, I honestly think Iggy is the guy to have on top line RW, so good to see him there. That’s definitely no knock on Nash though. He has ability to do it all on his own, however.
Dear Hockey Gods,
Please let the Canadians walk all over the Germans today. Make sure Chris Pronger eats his wheaties, Crosby ties his skates tight, and Luongo is sharper than diamond cutters.
Give the Canadians strength and let the pride of our nation ride upon their shoulders. With every stride, every pass, every shift, let the momentum lift us to glory.
For ever and ever
Amen
lol, nicely put.
The hockey gods punish hubris. That is all.
I can be cocky all I want… it’s whether the actual team is cocky or not that matters!
btw, here are the forward lines:
Nash — Getzlaf — Perry
Stall — Crosby — Iginla
Marleau — Thornton — Heatley
Morrow — Toews — Richards
P.s., my face is fucking numb.
Who’s “numb”?
5:30 start time? Hopefully the wifey picks me up soon or I’ll be missing some of the game.
Your wife! Bazinga!
Nice hit by Staal
Sure hope we get a couple early ones, we don’t need this goalie getting any confidence…
Yup, agreed there. Kind of a slow start so far.
McGuire makes these games worth watching. Some close ones on the PP. Bulge the twine already!
Jumbo Joe scored to make it 1-0..
Thank you Jeebus!
Doughty looking good again on the rush.
Wow THornton woke up! GOAL! Our young D are playing awesome.
I’m seriously barely staying awake right now.. that goal gave me a little jolt.
oh man, Getzlaf…
Poke your filling. That should wake you up a bit. Getzlaf with too much time there.
Anyone buy a white jersey? That’s a lot of red in the crowd.
White is pretty blah.
I got one… Wearing my red tonight though!
As much as we’re controlling the game I’m still feeling a little disconcerted at how we just can’t seem to get any real flow going, nothing is nice and crisp, and there just doesn’t seem to be any real cohesiveness out there.
Yup, completely agree gr8one. Hopefully the 2nd or 3rd will look better.
Weber is the new Souray. Bombs shots, but misses the target.
Er… I stand corrected.
holy crap… OK McGuire, we get the idea.. it went right through the net, and it was a goal.. yes we know… did it go through the net, Pierre?
wow…what a goal by Weber. Fuck breaking glass…just rip the twine.
Nice drive by Nash. Keep on em boys.
Iggy for 3!
woot, 3-0
Anyways, just a little add-on to my first post.
I think we screw around with our lines too much in these competitions, and when a line doesn’t immediately go out and dominate everyone seems to freak out and start moving people around…I’d much rather see them set the lines and stay with them, and by the time we get to this point in a tourney all cylinders will be firing.
we do look better in this period so far though.
Pronger overhears Pierre talking about him, punches him in the face. That would be awesome.
Feels dirty, but YAHOOO!!! IGGY SCORES AGAIN!!!
I personally don’t think Iginla ever should have been bumped off the top line.. and nothing to do with him playing well just tonight. And again, agree with you, gr8one. I get impatient at times, myself, but you’re right.. they should give more time for chemistry to build.
hehe, I know what you mean, but hey…it will be nice for the guy to at least win some sort of hardware in his career.
Oh my.. penalty shot for Rick Nash… wow.
I thought Iginla faded out a bit because he was hurting a bit. But who knows. Ooooh, penalty shot after another dangerous looking Nash rush.
lol @ you two… I like Iggy. I’m not ashamed to say it. He’s from Edmonton, or St. Albert, or whatever, so it doesn’t feel so bad.
When he’s wearing the Flames jersey though, I’ll hate him.
Ah… Should have let Nash take it. He earned it.
His ice time was cut earlier on, and ya, probably due to injury.
Totally off topic, but do Canadian McDonald’s have those new BigMac Wraps?
if so, and you haven’t had one…they’re fucking great, I can eat like 10.
Feeling a little more relaxed now that we’re up 4-0.
Every time Pierre says experiment tonight, down a shot of tequila.
Don’t talk about the score… Got it.
I don’t ever hit up McDonald’s anymore, so no idea if we have those here. They sound pretty deadly. Like, let’s take what is normally considered a health food and turn it into the fattiest health food possible.
hey all, late to the party…looks good so far
i also just noticed i was wearing different coloured socks all day
PS3 die?
