CAN Canada 8 FINAL GER Germany 2
Qualification Playoff
Date: Feb 23 @ 5:30 PM MST
Canada: 1-1-0-1
Germany: 0-0-0-3

Well, this is a game Canada might need after a tough loss to the US. This SHOULD be an easy game in which they can get their systems in order, and should be light work for Luongo. Yes, Luongo. He’ll get the start in this one, according to Daren Millard’s Twitter. Many people seem to be calling for Brodeur’s head, but I think there was more wrong in that game than just him. It was marred by badly timed penalties (are there good-timed penalties?), as well as a poor, poor play by Corey Perry in the final minute that really hampered a possibility of a comeback.

And well, I hate to take any team lightly, but if Canada loses this one, they really deserve to be out of the tourney. They should win this one, and they should win it by a solid margin as well. I’ll predict a 6-0 victory for this one. Hopefully it’ll give the team a bit of confidence that they will need going into a tough game on Wednesday vs. the Russians. I may be counting my chickens before they hatch, but if the Germans win this one, it’ll be a miracle on ice bigger than the U.S. defeating Russia in 1980. Stranger things have happened though.

Canada’s forward lines:
Nash — Getzlaf — Perry
Stall — Crosby — Iginla
Marleau — Thornton — Heatley
Morrow — Toews — Richards

CAN CAN – 10:13 – Thornton from Heatley, Keith
Keith intentionally shoots wide off the backboards. Heatley picks up the puck and goes behind the net and throws it out to Thornton who puts it behind Greiss.
CAN CAN – 2:32 – Weber from Richards
Weber blasts a bomb of a shot that goes right through the top corner of the net on Greiss’ blocker side. Play continues on. After review, the goal is allowed.
CAN CAN – 3:41 – Iginla (PP) from Staal, Doughty
Keith’s shot redirects in front. Staal tries to bang in the rebound a couple of times, then passes it across to Iginla, and he puts it away.
CAN CAN – 8:50 – Iginla from Staal, Boyle
With Crosby driving to the net, Staal fires a bullet of a pass to Iginla, who wrists a bullet top corner on the glove side.
GER GER – 16:34 – Goc from Schmidt, Muller
After a shot from up high is blocked, Luongo is scrambling in the net and gets bumped by Sturm. Goc swings behind the net and wraps it into the net.
CAN CAN – 1:10 – Crosby from Staal, Keith
Keith throws it cross ice to Staal down load. He in turn quickly passes it out front to Crosby in the slot, and Crosby tips it in quickly.
CAN CAN – 6:41 – Richards from Morrow, Toews
Moreau collects the puck down behind the goal line and then backhands a blind pass to the slot to Richards who buries it.
CAN CAN – 11:22 – Neidermayer, unassisted
Short handed, Neidermayer steals the puck at the blue line and beats the German defenseman. He gets in alone on Greiss and puts it low and through the wickets.
CAN CAN – 16:28 – Nash from Pronger
Pronger fires a long pass to Nash who streaks down the right side and cuts towards the middle, shooting, and he beats Greiss.
GER GER – 18:58 – Klinge from Hospelt, Muller
Seabroook is beat by a stretch pass. Muller and Klinge go in on a 2 on nothing. Muller shoots and Luongo makes a great save, but kicks the rebound to Klinge, who bats it out of the air in the net before Luongo can recover.
1st 2nd 3rd Total
CAN CAN 14 11 14 39
GER GER 4 10 9 23

Well, take this one with a grain of salt, as it is just Germany, but the Canadians looked like a much better line, especially for the top line of Crosby, Staal and Iginla. These guys are a heck of a force. Luongo played as solid as you could hope he would. Weber, Doughty, and Keith drew gushes from the panel, and rightfully so. Can they carry that into the game vs. Russia? That’s a good question. We’ll find out tomorrow at 5:30PM, MST.

I don’t think this will be a cakewalk, but you’re right; Canada needs a statement game.

I don’t really blame Brodeur for the loss, but I think most would admit he didn’t have a very good game and looked bizarre at times in trying to do too much in my view. He used to be fantastic with the puck. His trapezoid rule clearly killed those skills. Too bad.

I expect Luongo to be stellar. I just need him to imagine he’s playing the Flames or something and we’ll be fine. I am very concerned about our lack of ability to score on the PP. Mike Green or even Dion Phaneuf are looking like they would have helped this team a lot. Pronger and Niedermayer got the veteran entitlement spots here for sure. They have been horrid. I expect to see a lot less of them and more of Keith and Seabrook.

As for the forwards, wouldn’t it be nice to see Smytty playing with Morrow out there? This team needs to find the passion they did in the last 2 minutes of that game at the drop of the puck and keep it dialed in. What’s nice is that the Germans will be a good team to play as they are sound in all areas and not a pushover.

I’d say we will likely win with a score of about 6-2.

Also, “Jumbo Joe” needs to figure out he’s a big son of a bitch and not play the perimeter. I know that’s the story of his career, but all I’m asking for is one tournament that he uses his size and doesn’t play like he just smoked a big spliff of B.C. budd.

  2. Haboiler says:

Looks like Staal and Iggy to hook up with Crosby tomorrow. Might be a decent line, interested to see how it turns out.

  3. Racki says:

Chucker: agreed on Jumbo Joe. It was pretty sad seeing him get knocked around off the puck. Not sure how it can happen to a guy that big that much.

As for the top line, I honestly think Iggy is the guy to have on top line RW, so good to see him there. That’s definitely no knock on Nash though. He has ability to do it all on his own, however.

  4. Oilersman says:

    Dear Hockey Gods,

Please let the Canadians walk all over the Germans today. Make sure Chris Pronger eats his wheaties, Crosby ties his skates tight, and Luongo is sharper than diamond cutters.

Give the Canadians strength and let the pride of our nation ride upon their shoulders. With every stride, every pass, every shift, let the momentum lift us to glory.

    For ever and ever

  5. Racki says:

    lol, nicely put.

  6. Steve-O says:

The hockey gods punish hubris. That is all.

  7. Racki says:

I can be cocky all I want… it’s whether the actual team is cocky or not that matters!

btw, here are the forward lines:
    Nash — Getzlaf — Perry
    Stall — Crosby — Iginla
    Marleau — Thornton — Heatley
    Morrow — Toews — Richards

P.s., my face is fucking numb.

    Who’s “numb”? 😉

  9. Trogdor says:

5:30 start time? Hopefully the wifey picks me up soon or I’ll be missing some of the game.

  10. Racki says:

    Who’s “numb”?;)

    Your wife! Bazinga!

  11. Racki says:

    Nice hit by Staal

  12. Haboiler says:

Sure hope we get a couple early ones, we don’t need this goalie getting any confidence…

  13. Racki says:

Yup, agreed there. Kind of a slow start so far.

  14. Trogdor says:

McGuire makes these games worth watching. Some close ones on the PP. Bulge the twine already!

  15. Racki says:

Jumbo Joe scored to make it 1-0..

  16. Trogdor says:

    Thank you Jeebus!

  17. Trogdor says:

Doughty looking good again on the rush.

  18. Haboiler says:

Wow THornton woke up! GOAL! Our young D are playing awesome.

  19. Racki says:

I’m seriously barely staying awake right now.. that goal gave me a little jolt.

  20. Racki says:

    oh man, Getzlaf…

  21. Trogdor says:

Poke your filling. That should wake you up a bit. Getzlaf with too much time there.

  22. Trogdor says:

Anyone buy a white jersey? That’s a lot of red in the crowd.

  23. Racki says:

    White is pretty blah.

  24. Trogdor says:

I got one… Wearing my red tonight though!

  25. gr8one says:

As much as we’re controlling the game I’m still feeling a little disconcerted at how we just can’t seem to get any real flow going, nothing is nice and crisp, and there just doesn’t seem to be any real cohesiveness out there.

  26. Racki says:

Yup, completely agree gr8one. Hopefully the 2nd or 3rd will look better.

  27. Trogdor says:

Weber is the new Souray. Bombs shots, but misses the target.

  28. Trogdor says:

    Er… I stand corrected.

  29. Racki says:

holy crap… OK McGuire, we get the idea.. it went right through the net, and it was a goal.. yes we know… did it go through the net, Pierre?

  30. gr8one says:

wow…what a goal by Weber. Fuck breaking glass…just rip the twine.

  31. Trogdor says:

Nice drive by Nash. Keep on em boys.

  32. Trogdor says:

    Iggy for 3!

  33. gr8one says:

Anyways, just a little add-on to my first post.

I think we screw around with our lines too much in these competitions, and when a line doesn’t immediately go out and dominate everyone seems to freak out and start moving people around…I’d much rather see them set the lines and stay with them, and by the time we get to this point in a tourney all cylinders will be firing.

we do look better in this period so far though.

  34. Trogdor says:

Pronger overhears Pierre talking about him, punches him in the face. That would be awesome.

  35. Trogdor says:

Feels dirty, but YAHOOO!!! IGGY SCORES AGAIN!!!

  36. Racki says:

I personally don’t think Iginla ever should have been bumped off the top line.. and nothing to do with him playing well just tonight. And again, agree with you, gr8one. I get impatient at times, myself, but you’re right.. they should give more time for chemistry to build.

  37. gr8one says:

Trogdor: Feels dirty, but YAHOOO!!!IGGY SCORES AGAIN!!!

hehe, I know what you mean, but hey…it will be nice for the guy to at least win some sort of hardware in his career.

  38. Racki says:

Oh my.. penalty shot for Rick Nash… wow.

  39. Trogdor says:

I thought Iginla faded out a bit because he was hurting a bit. But who knows. Ooooh, penalty shot after another dangerous looking Nash rush.

  40. Racki says:

lol @ you two… I like Iggy. I’m not ashamed to say it. He’s from Edmonton, or St. Albert, or whatever, so it doesn’t feel so bad. 😛 When he’s wearing the Flames jersey though, I’ll hate him.

  41. Trogdor says:

Ah… Should have let Nash take it. He earned it.

  42. Racki says:

Trogdor: I thought Iginla faded out a bit because he was hurting a bit.But who knows.Ooooh, penalty shot after another dangerous looking Nash rush.

His ice time was cut earlier on, and ya, probably due to injury.

  43. gr8one says:

Totally off topic, but do Canadian McDonald’s have those new BigMac Wraps?

if so, and you haven’t had one…they’re fucking great, I can eat like 10.

  44. Trogdor says:

Feeling a little more relaxed now that we’re up 4-0.

Every time Pierre says experiment tonight, down a shot of tequila.

  45. Trogdor says:

Don’t talk about the score… Got it.

  46. Racki says:

I don’t ever hit up McDonald’s anymore, so no idea if we have those here. They sound pretty deadly. Like, let’s take what is normally considered a health food and turn it into the fattiest health food possible. 😆

  47. Steve-O says:

hey all, late to the party…looks good so far

  48. Steve-O says:

i also just noticed i was wearing different coloured socks all day

  49. Trogdor says:

    PS3 die?
