Date: Jan 5 @ 6:00 PM MST

UPDATE: Updated with results, awards, post-game rant and more… read on.

Will that picture be re-created tonight, perhaps with Jordan Eberle the subject? Let’s hope so. The Canadians barely squeaked off a shootout win against the USA on New Years Eve. The Americans look to be the best match for the offensive Canadians (not to be confused with the other meaning of the word “offensive”, often used with the Oilers as of late). The Americans play a very strong, tight neutral zone game. I suppose you could call it a trap, but it’s smart hockey. The Canadians had a lot of trouble getting passes through the neutral zone. They also have been having some difficulty with their powerplay and have changed it up a bit, giving them another option.

Anyways, there also is an Oilers GDT thread out there (below this one). But I have to wonder why anyone in the world would watch that game over this one. This is exciting hockey folks. Even if the Oilers were doing well, this is what hockey is all about. Tune in for sure.

USA wins Gold in an epic final

USA wins Gold in an epic final

Well, this one is in the books. It was won on a goal by John Carlson. I have to hand it to the Americans. They played a great game. They played a solid 60+. When Canada came back, it was because the Canadians were pressing HARD, not because the USA laid back. The US clearly deserved to win.

That all said though, what a great game played by Canada. Unfortunately, they got off to a slow start and had some bad goaltending off the hop as well. They were clawing to stay in this one nearly the whole way. Again, the magic-man Jordan Eberle did his best to keep Canada in this. He scored two goals late in the 3rd period to tie it up 5-5 and force overtime. But it wasn’t meant to be.

The good news for us Oilers fans is that Jordan Eberle racked up a few awards after the tournament’s end – he was named one of the top 3 players for Canada (voted on by the coaching staff for Canada), player of the game for Canada, forward of the tournament, and tournament MVP. As Pierre McGuire would say “If you’re a fan of the Edmonton Oilers… get excited about Jordan Eberle!”. He’s from Regina, but it was good hearing the Saskatoon fans chant “Eber-le! Eber-le! Eber-le!” when he received the forward of the tournament award. TSN even gushed about Eberle, saying he was the most clutch player to ever suit up for Canada in the juniors. Pierre McGuire: “He’s the most prolific goalscorer Canada has ever had”. Bob McKenzie: “I agree. I don’t remember a more clutch performance back to back by a Canadian player.” Get excited, indeed. Depending on your view, he also took over the lead for career goals in the World Juniors by a player. The IIHF counts shootout winners as goals, however. So if you remove this, then he would be tied with John Tavares for the lead (and Eberle has played one less game). Either way, that’s pretty impressive.

Disappointing loss, but good game by Canada, and great hosting done by Saskatchewan. It wasn’t meant to be this year, but great game Canada!

Ya I’m just going by twitter.

Hell, even the Oilers site still says 1-0. But their twitter says 2-1.

  2. Steve-O says:

    oilers twitter said 2-1

not surprisingly they can’t even do that right

  3. Steve-O says:

we should offer anaheim staios for mcmillan

  4. Racki says:

Hopefully Conklin and JDD are watching this training vid on playing the puck behind the net.

  5. Racki says:

Ok, it turns out the guy operating Oilers Twitter is high. It’s 1-0 still.

  6. Racki says:

So in other not-so-shocking news, Ovechkin is bearing the “C”.

  7. Trogdor says:

    Who’s high? Conklin and JDD?

  8. MetalOil says:

1 period left….. Time to put it all on the line !!!

  9. LateNightOilFan says:

Trogdor: 2-1? TSN website is behind the times.

NHL.com is still showing 1-0 with 2 min left in 1st,

  10. Steve-O says:

Racki: Hopefully Conklin and JDD are watching this training vid on playing the puck behind the net.

    khabibuln could benefit as well

…well if he was ever coming back

  11. Racki says:

Steve-O: we should offer anaheim staios for mcmillan

Next offer … St. Louis: Nilsson for Pietrangelo

  12. LateNightOilFan says:

    Argh post!

Well they didn’t have a choice to penalize the US there.

  13. Racki says:

    Powerplay time! Let’s go Canada

  14. Steve-O says:

    is campbell drafted?

  15. Trogdor says:

Cmon boys! Let’s get this powerplay rolling again.

  16. MetalOil says:

    Wow nice saves

  17. Trogdor says:

Time to simplify and get pucks to the net. Keep passing on opportunities.

  18. LateNightOilFan says:

    Steve-O: is campbell drafted?

    Can’t be if he’s only 17

  19. Racki says:

    Steve-O: is campbell drafted?

    Shit 4-3

  20. LateNightOilFan says:

    No, no, no, no!

  21. Trogdor says:

    ARGH! 2 on 1? not good…

  22. LateNightOilFan says:

    Trogdor: ARGH! 2 on 1? not good…

Especially after a US PK. Lots of time though to come back.

  23. Trogdor says:

How was that not a penalty?

  24. MetalOil says:

    OMG Allen

  25. Racki says:

    Allen…. alllllenn… bad bad.

  26. Trogdor says:

    From bad to worse…

  27. LateNightOilFan says:

    Oh jeez, shades of MAF

  28. Trogdor says:

Commercial break at least for the back up to stretch.

  29. DropIt says:

Jake Allen sucks. Hopefully we can get the same momentum boost from a goalie swap

  30. MetalOil says:

Well the Script says that whenever the US seem to have us on the ropes their is a Canadian rally not far behind… It ain’t over..

  31. Racki says:

Yup, not over… only down by 2… let’s go Canucks!

  32. MetalOil says:

not looking good though. we look rattled.

  33. Racki says:

Canada has the magic to pull a comeback out of their asses, but as much as I hate to say it, USA has the best team at the tourney this year.

  34. DropIt says:

Jared Cowen is equally as bad as Allen

  35. Trogdor says:

Cmon guys… Everyone is trying to do it on their own.

  36. Trogdor says:

Still pouring beer late in the third?

  37. LateNightOilFan says:

Trogdor: Cmon guys… Everyone is trying to do it on their own.

Yup, probably should have had a timeout after the 5th goal

  38. Racki says:

Trogdor: Still pouring beer late in the third?

You do realize this is in Saskatchewan….

  39. Racki says:

Yup, probably should have had a timeout after the 5th goal

Tough to know whether its better to do that now or save it for when we’re down by a goal with a minute left and need to draw up a play (for example). But I did think a t/o would have been good there too.

  40. Racki says:

Man, St. Louis got a good pick last year.

  41. DropIt says:

Canada looks dormant right now, they can’t seem to get in to USA’s zone.

  42. Racki says:

oh my god… damn these guys.. they play so tight in front of the net.. great at collapsing.

  43. Trogdor says:

So close… Time for the PP to finally work.

  44. MetalOil says:

Well thats what we needed !!! COME ON PP

  45. LateNightOilFan says:

Racki: Tough to know whether its better to do that now or save it for when we’re down by a goal with a minute left and need to draw up a play (for example)

True, pulling the goalie was probably the momentum changing tool he was using there.

Canada can’t buy a goal, so many chances. Hopefully they get one on this PP.

  46. Racki says:

    Damn they neeeed this.

  47. Trogdor says:

    One more closer!!!

  48. MetalOil says:

    You Know Who !!!!!!!!!!

  49. Racki says:

    EBERLE!!!!!! 5-4!!!

  50. LateNightOilFan says:

    yessssss!!!!! That’s our boy!
