PRE-GAME RANT

Will that picture be re-created tonight, perhaps with Jordan Eberle the subject? Let’s hope so. The Canadians barely squeaked off a shootout win against the USA on New Years Eve. The Americans look to be the best match for the offensive Canadians (not to be confused with the other meaning of the word “offensive”, often used with the Oilers as of late). The Americans play a very strong, tight neutral zone game. I suppose you could call it a trap, but it’s smart hockey. The Canadians had a lot of trouble getting passes through the neutral zone. They also have been having some difficulty with their powerplay and have changed it up a bit, giving them another option.

Anyways, there also is an Oilers GDT thread out there (below this one). But I have to wonder why anyone in the world would watch that game over this one. This is exciting hockey folks. Even if the Oilers were doing well, this is what hockey is all about. Tune in for sure.

POST-GAME RANT

USA wins Gold in an epic final

USA wins Gold in an epic final

Well, this one is in the books. It was won on a goal by John Carlson. I have to hand it to the Americans. They played a great game. They played a solid 60+. When Canada came back, it was because the Canadians were pressing HARD, not because the USA laid back. The US clearly deserved to win.

That all said though, what a great game played by Canada. Unfortunately, they got off to a slow start and had some bad goaltending off the hop as well. They were clawing to stay in this one nearly the whole way. Again, the magic-man Jordan Eberle did his best to keep Canada in this. He scored two goals late in the 3rd period to tie it up 5-5 and force overtime. But it wasn’t meant to be.

The good news for us Oilers fans is that Jordan Eberle racked up a few awards after the tournament’s end – he was named one of the top 3 players for Canada (voted on by the coaching staff for Canada), player of the game for Canada, forward of the tournament, and tournament MVP. As Pierre McGuire would say “If you’re a fan of the Edmonton Oilers… get excited about Jordan Eberle!”. He’s from Regina, but it was good hearing the Saskatoon fans chant “Eber-le! Eber-le! Eber-le!” when he received the forward of the tournament award. TSN even gushed about Eberle, saying he was the most clutch player to ever suit up for Canada in the juniors. Pierre McGuire: “He’s the most prolific goalscorer Canada has ever had”. Bob McKenzie: “I agree. I don’t remember a more clutch performance back to back by a Canadian player.” Get excited, indeed. Depending on your view, he also took over the lead for career goals in the World Juniors by a player. The IIHF counts shootout winners as goals, however. So if you remove this, then he would be tied with John Tavares for the lead (and Eberle has played one less game). Either way, that’s pretty impressive.

Disappointing loss, but good game by Canada, and great hosting done by Saskatchewan. It wasn’t meant to be this year, but great game Canada!

    Racki: Arch-Nemesis… or Arch-Nemisz

there ya go going all “Principe” on us again…

    ;)

  2. DropIt says:

Damn, Flames game started at the same time… I was hoping for a period break hockey game

  3. Racki says:

TSN is giving the Canadians too much credit for a good period. They’ve got to get better for period 2 or we’ll be in trouble.

  4. DropIt says:

    Agreed Racki.
They seem to be a little too offensive minded. Also if Jake Allen keeps playing the way he is, I don’t think he lasts the 2nd period

  5. Racki says:

The USS Nemisz… except the Canadian version.

  6. Racki says:

Yah, they were pretty aggressive even on that one PK. It worked out fine though, thankfully. But they may get burned. I think they’ll come out with a better 2nd though.

  7. Racki says:

    Who’d pay $15,000 for a Kadri jersey… crazy Torontonians.

Racki: Who’d pay $15,000 for a Kadri jersey… crazy Torontonians.

    hah!

    that was my exact thought.

unless it’s his dad or something…

  9. gr8one says:

sorry, wrong thread I know, but I don’t care.

but anyone else get a nauseating feeling when they realize the Oilers are EIGHTEEN points behind the Coyotes half way through the season?

  10. gr8one says:

get that fucker outta the net.

  11. Racki says:

    Damn, Carlson makes it 3-2…

  12. Racki says:

gr8one: sorry, wrong thread I know, but I don’t care.but anyone else get a nauseating feeling when they realize the Oilers are EIGHTEEN points behind the Coyotes half way through the season?

I have pretty much blocked out all feelings when it comes to the Oilers these days. Don’t get me wrong… still a huge fan. But I don’t really care so much anymore if they win or lose… only because of the draft though.

  13. LateNightOilFan says:

I thought it was deflected but it looked like he was screened. Still, Allen’s making me nervous.

  14. LateNightOilFan says:

    Who’s the backup?

  15. Racki says:

Yikes…. honestly, Im with you gr8one.. I hope Jones can play cold though.

  16. gr8one says:

yeah, me too tbh, numb towards them would be a good way to describe it, it’s just every once in awhile I notice something like that, that shakes me out of my apathy for a few moments.

  17. Racki says:

    Goal Canada!!! 3-3!

  18. LateNightOilFan says:

    It’s in!

  19. gr8one says:

    woooooooooooooooooooooooot!

    tie game again…

ok boys, settle down and put this game away!

  20. LateNightOilFan says:

Wow, US pulled Lee, get those pucks to the net.

    Two teams out there refs…

  21. Racki says:

So much for the good reffing.

  22. LateNightOilFan says:

    There’s Allen’s glove, good.

  23. Racki says:

There you are, Mr. Make-up Call

  24. LateNightOilFan says:

    So many chances there!

  25. gr8one says:

    damned force field.

  26. gr8one says:

    officiating sucks.

better for international hockey if USA wins I guess.

  27. Trogdor says:

These boys have to get some pucks to the net. Not testing the new tender out enough.

  28. LateNightOilFan says:

Canada is coasting in their own zone, need to get to that puck faster. Man these Americans are fast.

  29. Racki says:

Tencer twittered that there are a lot of empty seats at Rexall tonight. Big surprise.

  30. Trogdor says:

I have a new chant for Pepsi. “Eh! Oh! Shoooooooooot!!!!”

  31. Racki says:

    Come on Kadri.

  32. Racki says:

Trogdor: I have a new chant for Pepsi.“Eh! Oh! Shoooooooooot!!!!”

When is the tourney in Edmonton next? We can get the shoot chant going better than any city!

  33. gr8one says:

Trogdor: I have a new chant for Pepsi.“Eh! Oh! Shoooooooooot!!!!”

yeah, and if you do, hit the net!

  34. MetalOil says:

    Oh Ebs nice moves!!!

  35. Racki says:

Oh man… i’d like to see the replay on that icing… close.

  36. gr8one says:

oh, nice anticipation slide there by Scandela.

  37. LateNightOilFan says:

I don’t want to jinx Canada by switching to the Oilers game. No bad vibes allowed.

  38. Racki says:

So the Swedes win 11-4 earlier today for the bronze. Just 1 assist for Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson. 1 goal, 1 assist for Lander.

  39. Racki says:

LateNightOilFan: I don’t want to jinx Canada by switching to the Oilers game.No bad vibes allowed.

I don’t think you want to do that to yourself anyways. :P

  40. gr8one says:

    LNOF:

    Don’t do it!

  41. Racki says:

1-0 Coyotes btw.. per Tencer: Vrbata gets a breakaway right off a neutral zone face off as Penner falls asleep…he beats Deslauriers 5-hole and it’s 1-0 Yotes.

  42. Trogdor says:

In other news… Brodeur shutouts +1

  43. Steve-O says:

    is mcmillan drafted?

  44. LateNightOilFan says:

It’s welded to TSN, no worries!

  45. Racki says:

    2-1 now Coyotes

  46. Trogdor says:

    Phoenix goal…

  47. Racki says:

    Steve-O: is mcmillan drafted?

    Anaheim Ducks

  48. Trogdor says:

2-1? TSN website is behind the times.
