I wouldn't be opposed to resigning Grebs but only if he takes a pay cut to about 2 - 2.25 million a season. No way we can afford to pay any more then that to a D-man who is such a big question mark & we would have to qualify Grebs at 10% more then his current salary to retain his RFA status with us.

And ya I have thought about the fact that maybe we are overvaluing Smid because he is playing with Lubes but we have him on a much better contract then that of Grebs so I am less worried about Smid at this point.

Didn't realize you guys were having a sidebar convo over here... :P

I'll side with N.O. on this one (maybe because i have a nice Grebeshkov jersey from his Russian Superleague days? :P). Giving up Grebs for nothing wouldn't be a wise move. Same with Gilbert. I'm OK (maybe even encourage) with trading one or both of those guys, but they definitely need to get something in return.

And really, I'd keep Grebeshkov over Gilbert too. Grebeshkov is in a huge funk. Playing with Strudwick will do that to you. :P Seriously though, they should not give him up for nothing, if they do move him.

On that logic we ought to believe that Smid is also merely a product of Lubomir (who is obviously a quality d-man who does make other players better)

Grebeshkov started poorly in his first year but ended on a high note, and that was not with Visnovsky (but with Gilbert, I believe) In addition, I see elements in Grebeshkov's game that leads me to believe he will be a quality defenseman in not too long (depending on the solution of this horrible mess we're in) The issue is his turnovers, obviously, which is something that is not impossible to rectify - though again, the current disarray the team is in leads turnovers to be more common than actual successful pass attempts. All of our defensemen throw the puck away at this point. The forwards are not doing enough to get open, thus making it even harder. Plainly spoken, I think Grebeshkov is a good player stuck in a bad situation more than he is a proponent of the bad situation.

Really NO. The only reason he was good last year was because he had Lubes as his partner. Lubes could transform O.J. Simpson into a Priest if he wanted too. Grebs has now had two very piss poor seasons averaging a give away per shift with one good season with Lubes as a partner sandwiched in there.
