GDT – Edmonton Oilers 2, Chicago Blackhawks 4 – Jan 26, 2010 @ 7:30 PM – TSN – Game 51

One fell swoop.
PRE-GAME RANT
Well the boys played hard against Dallas last game, but the end result was another deflating defeat after a late game winner by Neal. They’ve had a few days off since then and the skills competition over the weekend, so hopefully they are in good spirits and come out with energy. The Hawks are a team you don’t want to come out flat against.
The Hawks are 6-3-1 in their last 10 and most recently lost to the Canucks on Saturday 5-1. They’ve had a few days rest and time to think about the loss, so expect them to come out firing and try to break the Oilers spirit early on.

GAME NOTES
- Line ups are best guess at the moment.
- With Chorney active, Smid and Staios are likely still out.
- Gagner is unkown as well after a knee injury in Dallas.
- Brule unlikely to return tonight as well.
| 1ST PERIOD SCORING |
|---|
– 0:44 – Toews from Kane |
| Toews shoots from a very saveable angle, but it eludes Deslauriers somehow. |
| 2ND PERIOD SCORING |
- 5:50 – Brouwer from Kane, Keith |
| Kane wheels around the perimeter and down behind the goal line. He backhands it out front to Brouwer who pounds it home. |
– 10:13 – Byfuglien from Keith, Versteeg |
| Keith’s blast from the point is tipped by Byfuglien past Deslauriers. |
– 13:53 – Hossa from Sharp, Keith |
| Deslauriers is off to the side of the net after trying to poke away a rebound. He kicks it out to the other side where a wide open Hossa awaits. Licking his chops, he steps into it and drills it in the back of the net. Poor coverage by the Oilers. |
– 19:20 – Pisani from Moreau, Horcoff |
| Great hard work by the Moreau, Horcoff, Pisani line. Pisani tips it out front to Moreau who’s in the slot.. he pushes it through the goaltender’s legs. Pisani dives into the crease area and helps it into the net. |
| 3RD PERIOD SCORING |
– 5:44 – Potulny from O’Sullivan |
| Hjalmarsson coughs it up. Potulny picks up the puck and puts it in off the arm of Huet. |

1ST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
19:16 – The Blackhawks score on their first shot of the game.
8:17 – Ladd pokes at Deslauriers glove after a whistle drawing anger from Souray. He gives him a couple of big shoves before Stortini jumps in on the action. Nothing eventful happens though.
7:58 – Deslauriers tries to play a puck behind the net and in Deslauriers fashion makes it look incredibly difficult.
5:22 – Pouliot gets a good shot off here through the legs of a defender. The Oilers try to pounce on a rebound, and a small scrum ensues in front of the net after the whistle.
2ND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
18:49 – Great set of saves by Deslauriers on point blank chances by the Hawks.
10:15 – Oil buy a break as Madden gets sticked in the face while about to shoot on an empty net.
5:25 – Good tape to tape pass by Deslauriers to Versteeg here behind the net, but Versteeg wiped out in the corner. Man, he does not look good handling the puck tonight.
4:12 – Souray stands up Kopecky as he’s breaking into the zone and shooting.
3RD PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
12:09 – 2 seconds into the Oilers first PP of the game, O’Sullivan clotheslines Hendry with his stick. End of powerplay.
11:42 – Commentators note that Strudwick went to the dressing room earlier and hasn’t returned – hurt on a blocked shot.
9:42 – Hilarious replay. The TSN crew slow down the replay of Gagner in the Hawks zone with a smirk on his face as Kane skates by. He says “wanna go?” and gives him a shove, smiling.
4:02 – The top line gets a good chance.. Penner drops it to Cogliano who shoots it from far out and it goes out of play.
0:07 – Unbelievable save by Huet, as he dives across Roli style to prevent Penner from burying it into an empty net.
POST-GAME RANT
Hard one to watch. I had figured the Oil would lose (actually predicted a 4-2 loss in the comments, despite betting on the Oil). But really they were just completely flat for probably 45 minutes of the game. Really, the Hawks are just a much better team and it showed… again. Same old same old versus the Hawks, but we’ve seen worse losses to them.
Next game: Thursday vs. St. Louis at home, 7:30 on Sportsnet.

“Oh my goodness gracious Grebeshkov” – McGuire
Guess he won’t be Pierre’s Monster tonight!
I wonder if the will even bother doing both sides of the Ice with the Zamboni at the INT??
Boy, the fans are hatin it tonight.
Hey McGuire, was that illegal substitution? That was illegal substitution right? They got the extra man out there too fast, right? Thanks Pierre!
4-0 right away.
oh man.. Deslauriers.. great positioning there.
That’s it. Something has to be done between now and our next game. Trade, A firing, A demotion to the AHL, waive someone. Just something.
Dang, was watching with the volume down and it didn’t look good. A lot of Hawks possession. Boos got louder as I turned it up, and now another goal against, and good old McGuire telling me they look little league getting scored on, on the powerplay. Maybe I’ll mute it again.
NP – Further update – Apparently Theo was slow getting up after a save near the end of the 2nd. Per the Cap’s GDT on HF, Boudreau said after the game Theodore was day to day with a lower body injury.
Actually I guess can’t really blame him so much as O’Sully and everyone collapsing in on Deslauriers and leaving Hossa completely wide open to wire it in the yawning cage.
Time to speed up Varlamov’s recovery!
Man does Deslauriers look characteristically bad with handling the puck.
Apparently he’s back from his conditioning stint this week some time.
Kinda sad when the only home team to win in Rexall this year is the Edmonton Rush.
lol MetalOil.. wow…
yippeeee!!!
Was about to say this is a more positive looking shift and the fans rejoice!
Yah – prettiest ugly goal I’ve seen for a while!
There’s a pulse. Good hardworking goal.
28 to 13 the shots so far.
Trogdor, we should get our heads checked for betting on the Oil vs. the Hawks.
What can I say, the payout was desirable.
U guys probably would have had a better chance picking 6 ties on your tickets then picking the Oil to beat the Hawks if it was a high payout you were seeking.
4 games with 3 “sure bets” (although one didn’t work out) and it gave us 18 to 1 odds… wasn’t so bad. For 5 bucks, not too big of a gamble
WOW
How does OV not get a point in a 7-2 caps win??? not even an assist??? really???
lol thats crazy.
Yeah, saw people commenting about Crosby getting 6 pts against the Isles so clearly it means Crosby is way better than OV. By that logic everyone on the Caps who got a point tonight is up for a big raise.
Damn, we clear the zone and seconds later it’s back in again.
Potsy with the goal
WOO – 4-2, still lots of time to get some more!
That looked like Grebs in white with an assist.
Andy Sutton might be why (I think). Doesn’t matter, the rest of the Caps did enough damage – OV is learning to delegate now that he’s got the C, you know.
I’m actually watching the recorded game in between Oiler periods. Just finished seeing OV’s shot to Hillen’s face. Nasty – OV was all class though, stayed by Hillen’s side the entire time he was down. The Isles fell apart after that. Hillen’s blood was all over the ice in front of Roli’s net the rest of the period, the Caps scored goals 3 & 4 and his night was over.
Have the Hawks taken a penalty yet? Yes! Happened as I was typing.
Good opportunity for the Oil here – bring it to within 1 goal!
edit – or not.
Shortest PP ever.
Well that’s done…
What the heck happened to Grebs this year??? He made so much progress last year and boom back to the turnover machine that we saw when he first got here.
lol @ “wanna go?”
I’m pretty convinced it’s Visnovsky. The guy makes players better. He did play some time last year while Vis was out, but I think he struggles at times without a rock solid partner.
ya you got a good point there. If we do not get a good discount on him this summer then let him walk.
Surprised we didn’t get called for the slash on the stick…
Unfortunately if I’m not mistaken, we can’t get a discount on him because in order to qualify him, he has to get a certain % raise (might be 10%). If they don’t qualify him, then he becomes a UFA and anyone can grab him.
Another Grebeshkov hand grenade. lol
No way we can offer him 3.465 million. He is as good as gone.
MO: That’d be interesting.. they’d pretty much lose him for nothing. I can’t see anyone trading for him either.
wow, what a save by Huet!
Beauty save, not that they were in danger of losing.
maybe we could get say a 4th round pick for him to a team that wants some depth on the blueline for the playoffs.
What a stop there by Huet right at the end – who has been criticized quite a bit for not making the timely saves this season.
Ah well – another loss, but overall the result was better than I thought it would be. Thanks for the GDT folks!
Hey I called it. Woohoo
Too bad I didn’t call it on the Sport Select.
Although my whole “weather the storm” thing was wrong. They didn’t really weather anything tonight.
Thanks for coming out LNOF (And all)
