GDT - Edmonton Oilers at San Jose Sharks

The Oilers are coming off a heartbreaker vs. the Penguins on Thursday. After getting a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period, the Oilers struggled to contain the Staal line. Staal assisted on all 3 goals for the Penguins, who went on to win the game 3-2. The Oilers now sit at 1-12-1 in their last 14. Their last win was vs. Toronto back on December 30th. The Olympic torch was in Rexall place on Thursday night, and Quinn helped limp it down there. It must have been hard as hell not to burn the mother(bleep)er down, the way the season is going.

As for the Sharks, they sit at the top of the heap, tied for 1st with Chicago. The Sharks lost the last one in a shootout versus the Bruins, but are 7-2-1 in their last 10. This is the 3rd meeting of the two teams this season, and second of January. The Sharks won both games. The first game was on November 27th, and was a 5-4 loss, and the second was January 2nd, a 4-1 loss.

I think given the way the Oilers last game went, they could come out with a good game, however I don’t think afternoon games are their forte these days. So, prediction time…

Heart says: 4-3 Oilers
Brain says: 6-3 Sharks

(Uhh… yikes)

– Shawn Horcoff flew to San Jose with the team, however he was too ill to practice today. I wouldn’t expect him to play tomorrow. (UPDATE BELOW)
– Gilbert Brule didn’t fly to San Jose with the team.
– Stone and Pisani are now late scratches… looks like we have another flu bug making its way through the locker room. Yikes. I guess that’s good news for anyone cheering for a high pick though. Pisani is out with the flu, however Stone is out with his knee injured, according to Louie DeBrusk
– SNET just announced that Horcoff is in. Most likely manning up because Pisani and Stone are out. Say what you will, but the guy gives his all and puts the team first.

SJS – 3:51 – Marleu from Heatley, Thornton
Marleau throws it to the net from the corner and it redirects out front and through Dubnyk’s legs.
EDM – 15:58 Grebeshkov from Gagner, Cogliano
Gagner and Cogliano work hard to battle for a puck behind the goal line with Clowe and another shark. Gagner gains possession and cross-seams it to Grebeshkov who puts it in a fairly wide open net..
SJS – 18:44 – Setoguchi (PP) from Malhotra, Clowe
Setgochi fires it from the faceoff dot to Dubnyk’s left… it squeezes under Dubnyk’s arm.
SJS – 0:22 – Setoguchi from Pavelski, Malhotra
Dubnyk initially makes the save off Pavelski in the slot, but kicks it to the side to Setoguchi who puts it into the yawning cage.
SJS – 15:36 – Thornton from Murray, Marleau
The Sharks get a 3-on 2… Thornton drops to Marleau who fires it over to Murray. Murray cross seam to Thornton who just redirects it in. I’m not even sure if any of them broke a sweat that shift.
EDM – 9:43 – O’Sullivan (SH) unassisted.
O’Sullivan gets in on a 2-on-1 with Horcoff, shorthanded. He elects to shoot and slides it under Greiss. Sloppy PP by the Sharks so far, as that was the second Oilers short-handed scoring chance.

– Early on, Dubnyk is put to the test, but is pretty solid, stopping a short San Jose attack.
– Jacques, Gagner and Cogliano line’s first shift looked really good. Cogliano even showing some grit as he pushes Huskins away from a puck and passes it over to Gagner.
– Penner gets the first shift with the plugingtons (Strudwick and Stortini).
– Dubnyk lucked out on one Heatley chance. I’m not even sure where he thought the puck was, as he was way on the wrong side of the net. Looks like his defenseman bailed him out.
– Potulny bats one out of trouble that would have given the Sharks a shot at a wide open cage.

– Jacques gets nearly in one on one with Greiss, but Greiss comes flying out to poke the puck away from him.
– For a guy who is sick, Horcoff has been pretty reliable, defensively.
– Staios stays in with Marleau on a near breakaway. Staios and Marleau slam into each other and both go down before Marleau can get a shot off. Good defensive play by the vet.

– Smid does a nice job getting in front of a Heatley one timer on the powerplay. Marleau picks up the rebound and wraps it around, but Dubnyk gets the pad over and freezes the puck.
– On the same powerplay, Grebeshkov blocks an Ortmeyer slapshot and limps to the bench. Very good kill on the first PP of the period for the Sharks.
– Moreau and O’Sullivan work together with Gagner and generate 3 solid chances, but Greiss somehow keeps the puck out. Best chances of the period for the Oilers so far. O’Sullivan tried to bank it off Greiss’ back and in, and almost manages to do it.
– Gagner is ROBBED by Greiss in the slot. The puck lies in the crease and there is a scrum to battle for the puck, but the Sharks clear it after collapsing behind Greiss.
– Cogliano gets a short-handed chance on the Sharks 2nd PP of the period, but he’s clearly out of gas and Boyle paces him and prevents a quality shot.
– Healtey gets a 2-on-1.. on the chance he appears to put it in, but it’s waved off by the referee. Must’ve hit the bar and came out. Lucky.
– Dubnyk gets pulled for the extra man with 30 seconds left.

Not a spectacular one played by the Oilers, but not that bad of a game played either. Clearly they were playing a better team though. Cogliano and Gagner looked particularly good this afternoon, as did O’Sullivan and Horcoff (who was quite good defensively). The Oilers haven’t won in 7 games, and are winless so far in 2010.

Next game, Monday, a PPV vs. Colorado @ 7:00.

damn, this is an afternoon game? I’m gonna have to juggle some things if I want to watch it.

  2. zackman35 says:

Winds of shit are blowin’ boys, I feel something strange coming on.

In other news, well not really news, I had a weird dream about the advancement of the new Rexall arena. Not too sure why…

And I’ll be heading to work this afternoon so the timing doesn’t work well for me but hopefully Doobie plays and plays pretty good.

  3. OilerTyler says:

Tencer says that Pisani and Stone are not playing today

  4. NorwegianOiler says:

Does Tencer allude to why they are not in the lineup?

  5. OilerTyler says:

That is his twitter, it looks to me like they are out because of the flu

  6. Racki says:

Christ. Flu problems again? Wash the dressing room, you slobs. 😆

  7. Haboiler says:

It could be a long day for the Oil being short again and looking like 11 forwards including Strudwick. Times like this is when having the farm team closer than Mass. would be nice.

  8. Racki says:

I wonder who is in then. I don’t remember them carrying someone around other than Strudwick… these guys might be playing shorthanded unless they rush someone in.

  9. Racki says:

Ahh crap.. yah, I figured they wouldn’t have enough bodies to ice a full line-up. Kind of have to wonder why they did call anyone up. With Khabibulin and Hemsky out, they shouldn’t have any cap issues (I believe).

Edit: are you sure they even have 11 forwards for the game? With Strudwick, I figure 10.

  10. Haboiler says:

Even dare I say it Pouliot would have been nice to bring up off the conditioning stint. Horc was that sick on Thursday nite and if Brule never even went on the trip you would think they would have brought someone up. Plus we only have 22 on active roster.

  11. Racki says:

Actually Horcoff is in, so that’s 11.

  12. Haboiler says:

On Sportsnet it lists the lines as:

  13. Racki says:

    Cool, thanks Haboiler

  14. Racki says:

P.S. those lines are brutal… Jacques at center?!?

Cogliano and Horcoff should switch lines, and Horcoff should go in the middle, if he can.

  15. zackman35 says:

Yeah, switch Jacques and Horc at least… Man playing the best in the west shorthanded? Jeez

  16. Haboiler says:

I’m sure Cogs will be at centre and Jaqyes on the wing… probably an error on their part. But regardless they will be running 3 lines pretty much all game and considering Cogs and Moreau has been 2/3s of our 4th line most of the year… It might be a 2 line game lol.

  17. Haboiler says:

At least we get the back up!

  18. Haboiler says:

And they changed the lines again…

  19. Racki says:

    lines updated:

  20. Racki says:

    Wow, go Doobie

  21. LateNightOilFan says:

Get ready to face lots of rubber Devan! Nice for him to get consecutive starts.

I was thinking this was a 7pm start my time, glad I checked in.

And the station keeps cutting out, bleh.

Anyway, sounds like the stomach flu is making the rounds, just what the Oilers need, playing short-handed to boot.

    And it’s 1-0…

  22. Haboiler says:

Unreal…. too many bad goals down low this year.

  23. Racki says:

1-0 sharks.. booooo. Doobie started good there too.

  24. Racki says:

Gagner/Cogs line looks good so far. I said it forever ago, put Gagner and Cogliano together with a big body (although I suggested Penner). About time old balls did it.

  25. Haboiler says:

That must be the biggest size line we have had in a long while… Struds-Storts-Penner.

  26. Racki says:

hah, yah no kidding. Although I think we’ve had those two with Big Mac before. This one is a bit more mobile though. 😛

  27. Racki says:

SNET should get their shit together. Stop jiggling that loose cable..

  28. Racki says:

Moreau going visorless today. I wonder if he’ll pick up his physical game. It seems odd, but Staios’ physical play picked up a lot when he took his visor off again.

  29. Haboiler says:

    Atta be boys! beauty pass!

  30. LateNightOilFan says:

Woohoo, Grebs from Gags, 2 pts for my pool!

  31. Racki says:

That Gags/Cogs combination is looking to be money again.

  32. Haboiler says:

I agree. I think Cogs is pissed over his handling this year and is showing some skill when getting the chance.

  33. Haboiler says:

Another weak one… same as the other nite weak on that blocker side.

  34. LateNightOilFan says:

Not sure how much he was screened there, gotta find those pucks. Oh well, comes with experience I hope.

  35. Racki says:

Not the best way to begin a period.

  36. LateNightOilFan says:

    Nice start.

  37. LateNightOilFan says:

I’m sorry but I do not care for Pat Quinn’s tie at all.

  38. Racki says:

That’s got to be why we’re losing.. 😆

  39. LateNightOilFan says:

Racki: That’s got to be why we’re losing..

Yup, we should just hang the whole season on it too!

  40. LateNightOilFan says:

I always liked Jody Shelley – he was with the Mooseheads, in fact he was voted the #1 fan favourite last year when they celebrated their 15th anniversary. Lots of more skilled players have come and gone through the years but the fans always remember and appreciate the guys who protect the elite guys when all is said and done.

  41. Racki says:

Just saw the tie, and definitely it could destroy a season..

  42. Racki says:

Yah I liked Shelley too and wanted the Oil to sign him, or Hordichuk when they were available. But alas, we did not. But we ended up solving our toughness issues a year or so later (are the Oilers ever quick at fixing anything? I don’t think so…)

  43. Racki says:

Jesus.. tic … tac… in the net.

  44. LateNightOilFan says:

4-1 That was pretty though. *sigh* At least I also have Heatley and Thornton in my pool too.

  45. Trogdor says:

Nice goal, but JFJ should have stayed with Joe there. Very slow developing 3 on 2, but the patience paid off.

  46. Haboiler says:

Getting killed in the face off circle 74-26%, with Horc going 2-10.

  47. LateNightOilFan says:

    pk looked decent there.

  48. Haboiler says:

How did that not go in? Gags is starting to heat up…
