Edit (done deal): The Leafs also orchestrated another trade, sending Toskala and Blake to the Ducks for Giguere. Good deal for the Leafs. Toskala’s contract expires this year and is a cap hit of $4M. Blake’s is a $4M cap hit and expires at the end of 2012. Giguere is a big goaltending upgrade, and his cap hit is $6M and expires at the end of 2011.

Edit2: In what is turning out to be a pretty busy day, it looks like the Flames will send Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust to the New York Rangers. Possibly coming back is Ales Kotalik (for sure) and Chris Higgins (not sure on that one). This is per Darren Dreger of TSN. Busy guy today.

    Also, Layin Pipe (Steve-O?)

Can i get that trade back, now that the Flames have some offense? I want Bourque back :P

  2. MetalOil says:

On the bright side for the Oilers both the teams challenging us for the bottom are improving to the point that their is really no other competition for that coveted last place finish anymore.

    Yup. Very true.

I guess we can take some solace in the fact that TO is likely going to win more games with Dion and JSG. I guess that’s a pretty good thing for our draft aspirations. I’d still like to see all of our junk cleared away. Clearly there are no excuses for management after this deal. Trades are possible and you can dump bad contracts (Blake).

Sjostrom will help the TO PK. I wanted him here in the summer to tell you the truth. Good player. Dion improves their PP and D, JSG solidifies goal.

The losses of Stajan and Blake will hurt the offense, but TO has a couple guys like Tlusty they can call up to fill in. Hagman will be a big loss too. He’s better than the 20 goals he had with TO in my view. Not sure if he’ll be a Sutter player though.

Well Tamblowe, get at it and no excuses.

Also take note that it is an East/West deal(s). Hopefully Tamblowe take note of that too……

  5. MetalOil says:

Well this will probable get the ball moving for a lot of other trades around the league so we should start seeing some more trades very shortly and you would have to think that the Oilers will be getting down to business now.

  6. Racki says:

Jacques not at practice today…. Jacques+Deslauriers for Halak! :P (kidding)

  7. Steve-O says:

quasimodo was not a 6.5 mil d-man (I imagine sutter got buyers remorse the second the signatures were on that contract)

+ the flames picked up expiring contracts

this was a salary dump by the flames, plus the extra offense gets them to the playoffs this year

as for the anaheim trade, that is a contract dump by them as well as jsg lost his starting job (he’s not that good anymore) and you can’t pay your backup 6+ mil for next year

and finally, toronto just got rid of disgruntled players and picked up some salary for what they deem a good d-man

i’m actually thinking TO got the worst of these trades, but a lot of that probably comes down to my opinion of quasimodo

  8. Racki says:

Agree on the salary dump by the Flames.. was just posting the difference. See chart in original post.

Disagree though that Toronto got the worst of the deals. There’s no possible way to spin that deal with the Ducks as bad, as for one, they only have the bad cap hit for 2 years.

McGuire must be going nuts, now that he’ll get to see his lover boy on the Toronto Sports Network more.

  9. Steve-O says:

really, the oilers should be doing this crap too

trade moreau/staios for a overpaid sack of shit player whos contract ends this year, plus a pick

pick becomes better because we are doing teams a favor by eating some contract problems

toskala is a wash as he’s dropped at the end of the year (might as well pull a montreal and just tell him to stay home), so its jsg for blake

contracts end the same time, and anaheim saves 2 mil per year over that period, plus removes a useless player (6 mil backup) and gets something useful (not that useful, but still 1 goal and its better than having jsg)

Exactly what many of us have been saying for a while now, Steve-O…

No sir, contracts don’t end at the same time. Posted it earlier… Blake’s contact lasts to 2011-2012, Jiggy done 2010-11. The Leafs gain 2M this year (big deal), lose 2M next year, gain 4M the following year.

They have a shot getting Giguere to regain value.. no chance Blake will.

  13. MetalOil says:

It would be pretty cool if the main rivals of today’s trading partners could swing a big deal now. I am sure that a Mtl-Edm trade could be beneficial to these teams right now.

  14. Racki says:

    Halak+pick for Jacques+JDD ;)

  15. MetalOil says:

Is anyone else constantly checking out TSN(or other sport/hockey sites looking for more trades? It was beginning to feel like a bunch of trades would be happening today. Still might.

  16. DropIt says:

I’m checking it out to see if they forgot to mention Ponikarovsky’s name

  17. Mr.Majestyk says:

wow, so much for not being able to swing deals this season. If there’s a will, there’s a way. A whole bunch of fat contracts going back and fourth. Who would have thought that Jason Blake was tradeable? Giguere?

  18. Racki says:

Yes.. if the ship sailed on Moreau to Ducks (or anywhere for that matter) because Tambi dragged his ass, I’ll be pretty choked.. not that we would ever find out, mind you.

  19. Mr.Majestyk says:

well, hopefully a couple trades like this might get the ball rolling for Tambi and other teams to start making moves.

  20. MetalOil says:

This just goes to show you how speculative the media is. We all knew that Dion was on the market but who out there would have guessed that the Maple Leafs would be the team that he would end up on??? Although I am sure that Twatwaffle is claiming that he knew about this weeks ago. :)

  21. chucker says:

Mr.Majestyk: well, hopefully a couple trades like this might get the ball rolling for Tambi and other teams to start making moves.

I’ll drink to that. Then again, I’m known to drink to anything…

I checked out his site… He didnt even post anything after Mckenzie AND Dreger had it up…

Also, rumours circling of a ‘Jokinen/Prust for Higgins and Kotalik”

  23. Haboiler says:

Its on TSN.ca now… still rumours but looks legit.

  24. DropIt says:

If Kotalik makes it here, I will oficially be on the “Fire Sutter” boat.

Except that now i am hearing some rumours about Lecavalier

    *I sound like Eklund Twatwaffle…

  25. Haboiler says:

Where are the rumours saying Lecavalier is supposedly heading now? I can’t see him moving anywhere with a 7.7 cap hit for that long.

  26. DropIt says:

I have heard some people who have “spoken with inside guys” or “inside source” etc. so take with a VERY small grain of salt

oh. and Lecavalier to CGY in a 3rd deal….

I dont like it one bit

  27. Haboiler says:

Interesting, wonder what TB would be looking for?

  28. DropIt says:

Im not sure, i would imagine a replacement Cman, but maybe even a Sarich…. they need some veteran leadership on the point… ex player etc etc… obviously not the whole deal, but possibly a piece

  29. Racki says:

Well I guess you’ll be finding out the whole reason for moving Phaneuf. I’d assume that it would be to rake in a bigger piece like Kovalchuk, or as mentioned, Lecavalier. Apparently Calgary stalled the Kotalik deal, so it’s possible something better came along)

  30. neufab says:

Stay away from multimedia for 2 days and wake up to find out that trades ARE possible. And then find out Souray broke his hand. By this point we may as well recall the entire Springfield roster. What’s the scoop on the Kotalik deal? I’m not up to speed.

  31. neufab says:

Kotalik to Calgary… fuck off!!! It’s the whole Glencross thing revisited. Pisses me off almost as much as the Smyth trade, and the Messier trade. Meanwhile in E town… oh right… nothing except another body on the IR :(

  32. Racki says:

The Flames seem to be stalling that deal. And well, Kotalik isn’t that big of a factor.. they can have him.

  33. MetalOil says:

If Kotalik to the Flames stalls then maybe the Oilers should start talking to the Rangers. Kotalik had some real chemistry with Gags last year. Maybe O’Sully for Kotalik as the main pieces in the trade.

I know that Kotalik has been a bust this year for the Rangers but I think he would fit in better here.

  34. Racki says:

Kotalik makes too much, imho, for our rebuilding team. He was alright here, but it’s not like he was a huge factor either. Although it may at least free up Penner to play on a different line… say Penner Gagner Brule for line 2, and Kotalik Horcoff Hemsky for line 1… oh I just puked in my mouth a little bit.

  35. MetalOil says:

Yeah I guess you are right. Kotalik does not really fit the mold for a player that a rebuilding team should be going after.

  36. neufab says:

Kotalik & Girardi for Horcoff and Grebeshkov – both overpaid, both playing like crap this year, the biggest difference is Kotalik throws the body somewhat and the Oilers free up some cash. What’s the worst thing that could happen, the Oilers loose 19 of 20 games?

  37. Racki says:

Way too much cap hit going to the Rangers for them to do that deal.

  38. neufab says:

TSN says it’s final… Oli the Joke and Prust for Kotalik & Higgins.

  39. DropIt says:

Kotalik is holding up the deal with his NTC.
Sounds like he has CGY,EDM and VAN on his 3 team lisþ of locations he needs to approve being traded to, because of the travel.

Thank god, there is no reason to want Kotalik and his 3M contract without a good player in comensation.

Daryll has stated that he is really in want for Higgins, and Callahan may be replacing Kotalik, let’s hope so

  40. DropIt says:

Ya Neufab, no way the Rags take on Horcoffs salary, and for Girardi even less likely.

Personally, I think the only way EDM deals Horcoff is in a package with this years 1st round, and losing that pick is not worth getting rid of Horcoffs contract.

    Shawn Horcoff’s a lifer :P

  41. Racki says:

Yah, agreed DropIt. Unless Tambi/Katz grow a huge pair and send him to the minors or buy him out, he’s an Oiler until at least 2003/14 season, or he retires.

  42. gr8one says:

Racki: Yah, agreed DropIt. Unless Tambi/Katz grow a huge pair and send him to the minors or buy him out, he’s an Oiler until at least 2003/14 season, or he retires.

or Tambellini can get Sather to bend Gainey over for him like he did the Gomez trade.

  43. neufab says:

Okay, I admit, my earlier trade proposal was nothing more than blowing off steam. Even so, I’ve seen other things that were unlikely come to pass.

Both Jason Blake and J.S. Giguere were “untradable”. The one way to get rid of Horcoff is to bring in another overpaid player. It comes down to the needs of the team. A multi player deal so that enough cash changes hands, the other team gets a forward and one of our “puck moving” d-men, we get a defensive defensman and a bigger forward. I just think that Comrie plays bigger than Horcoff, and that we don’t need Horcoff. Problem is I don’t think Tambi doesn’t have the balls to do it though.

  44. Racki says:

Hey, I’m all for moving Horcoff.. just we are sending the Rangers a lot of salary in that suggestion and not taking much back. If we move Horcoff, I’d have to think that we’d take on a fair bit of salary ourselves.
