2010 Olympic Hockey Rosters

Didn’t do them all, but here are the major ones (Canada, Russia, USA, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden)… if anyone sees reason to add a roster or two, let me know and I’ll put them up. If anyone notes any changes, please let me know so I can update this.

I actually thought that Gilbert would be on the US. He didn’t deserve it and thet look pretty solid. Also too bad Smid din’t make it on.
Yah, I thought Smid has had a really good season so far. I would think he could have been ahead of one or two guys on that list, but maybe they didn’t need a defensive d-man.
The Americans.. always a bit of a dark horse.. but I guess they took a different plan than the usual.. pretty young team.
Racki, how do you make all of those cool tables?
HTML + CSS
In the stylesheet for the site, I’ve added some stuff to make things look a bit nicer, and added some classes so that some tables show one way, some show another. It can be a bit of work at times, but generally speaking, it’s not too bad now that I’ve done most of the labor of setting up the stylesheet.
Wasn’t sure where to put this, but the Oilers got in a little trouble last night in Cow town. They went out to a rely fany resturant and din’t pay the full bill. Of Course the ‘leader’ Ethan Moreau was part of the group. They hit the bottles hard and wouldn’t pay for each shot individually, but by the bottle. Anyway heres the link to the story on TSN:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=304329
Now I wonder what Quinn is going ot have to say about this. It makes me won der if the problems off the ice are affecting them on the ice. I think this warrents change even more. These dumb vets and ‘leaders’ better smarten up, because I don’t think they realize we have skilled young players with CLASS coming up. Not sure if this happens a lot and we don’t here about it, but these guys acted like pricks last night. Excuse my french
Apparently that’s not the whole story.
The way the Oilers tell it when they got the bill it was for $19,000.00, and the Oilers said no way the bill should be that high and that it was inflated, the restaurant re-calculated it and it came down to 12 thousand and change, and the Oilers agreed to pay that.
now, I’d say there’s something fishy when a bill is re-calculated and it drops by almost 7 grand.
holy shit for the restaurant bill being that much though…for it to drop 7 grand the restaurant must have accounted for Penner but he must have been a no show. hehe
anyways, back to the topic…
it’s kind of sad not seeing Hemsky on the Czech roster.
Gr8one: He would have been there for sure, if not for the shoulder injury.
Boston Oiler: in the future, if you’re not sure, put it in the General Discussion page. Look on the top menu of the site, and you’ll see that page there. I’m considerably less anal and considerably more lazy to the point that I don’t care where it goes so much, but it’s best to put stuff like that there, unless there is a thread for it, or you’re just chatting it up on game day.
Czechs have a very deep defense core. While I think Smid is very good, it looked like they opted for a more veteran defense core. If Smid were to make it, he would have to play on the top 4 role. Me personally would rather see Kaberle, Kubina, Hejda, and Michalek on the top 4.
I’d agree that that top 4 is better without Smid, however if you can tell me which of Canada’s d-men doesn’t deserve to be in a top-4 slot too, I’d be surprised. Point being, in a tournament with the best of the world, you want your best players all throughout your line up, not like a typical NHL line up where you ice what you can afford. Four players isn’t deep.
I don’t know who Blatak or Polak are. From what I’ve read, Polak sounds like he plays a similar game as Smid.. not sure who is the better. Blatak, again, I know nothing about since he’s never played in the NHL. So I don’t know.. it’s not like Smid was ripped off by not being picked, but he could have made that line up for sure.
I was was surprised that Gilbert didn’t make the team. Not that he’s played well enough to make it, but sometimes the US just doesn’t have the depth to pick and choose. Well, hopefully he uses it as motivation to work that much harder on his game.
Racki, can you please put the rest of the teams on here? You only have about half of the olympic teams on here.
Also, I noticed you referred to the Calgary Flames as the “flamers”, surely that must have been a typo right? I dont like them at all, but they might be tough to beat come postseason.
Hey Sid, welcome to the site. First off, I will add the rest of the teams later on, sure.
As far as the “Flamers”, this is an Edmonton Oilers-based site 99% of the time. We’re only filling the void of the break with Olympic hockey. So the “Flamers” comment is just in good fun.
All rosters are up now. If anyone notices any issues (as in players missing / incorrect), please let me know.
looks good here Racki.
Thanks a lot man!
Which team does everyone think will come away with the gold? Id love to see the USA challenge Canada and Russia, but I doubt that will happen. Canada all the way I predict.
There’s a poll at the bottom of the post here. Most predict Canada (nearly 50%), the next highest is Russia, followed by USA then Sweden.
Personally, I think Canada takes it. They’ve got an incredibly strong roster which has great talent in all positions plus 4 lines that are dangerous. Russia could challenge though, as their top six is close to, if not better than Canada.
I would honestly be surprised if another team won it, although anything can happen. Not being a cocky Canadian fan, just stating that those two rosters are pretty impressive. I never count out Sweden though.
I wonder why R J Umberger isn’t on the US roster or do you think he’s not good enough…..just wondering
I don’t think he’s consistently good enough to be a guy you think of as a lock for the team. But he probably could have made it. Who would you take out though? Maybe Backes or Pavelski? Even though his NHL numbers aren’t stellar, I can understand why Backes is there. He’s also been good for the US.
Yeah that makes sense. I really like this site, I’m glad I found it. My favorite line from slapshot is “maybe we’ll call a pizza parlor….why don’t you call a massage parlor”
Hey Boos, thanks for the compliment… glad to have you around. Just as an FYI (because it won’t be obvious right now), this site is primarily an Edmonton Oilers site. But we do discuss other things in the NHL (as well as the big tourneys like the World Juniors and the Olympics) when those are going on. But you might be in for a surprise had I not mentioned that when we switch gears back to Oiler hockey!
Fans of all teams are definitely welcome here, and you wouldn’t be alone in that… I presume you’re a Flyers fan. One of the authors here (Trogdor) is also a fellow Flyer fan.
Someone I work with visits your site regularly and recommended it to me to read also. The writing style is superior and the content is top-notch. Thanks for the insight you provide the readers!
Thanks for the complement.. we’ve let ourselves slide the last month or so, but there hasn’t been much to talk about. Hockey season is almost upon us though…
If you are a spam bot, I’ll take this all as a complement anyways.
