GDT - Edmonton Oilers at Dallas Stars

It’s an early one today in Texas. The Oilers are currently riding the ever-dangerous one game winning streak, coming off of a 4-1 win vs. the Detroit Dead Things who forgot to show up to the game. But despite the Red Wings poor performance, the Oilers were still at the top of their game and deserved the win. The Stars are also HOT… with their one game winning streak as well, after a 3-1 win over Anaheim on Thursday. Amidst all the drama of to-blow-up-or-not-to-blow-up, we might have an OK game here. I’m going to start a new prediction idea – 2 predictions: one with my heart, one with my brain. The heart prediction is the one that is heavily swayed by the Oil fan in me that will never predict a loss, even in the worst of situations. The brain prediction is the one that throws that all away and votes completely based on what I consider logic.

Heart’s prediction: 5-3 Oilers
Brain’s prediction: 4-3 Oilers in OT.

Pretty close today. I don’t see why the Oilers can’t win this one.

– None to speak of just yet.

15:51 – DAL – Benn from Ribeiro, Morrow
JDD takes a shot high off the chest and the rebound drops to the slot. Benn picks it up and goes around Deslauriers and flips it in.

19:29- DAL – Neal from Richards, Grossman
Neal out battles Gagner in the slot and puts it upstairs on Deslauriers.

Other Highlights
– Some good hitting by both sides early on. Stortini rattles the boards with a nice hit on a Dallas defenseman in the Stars’ zone.
– The last half of the period seems to be all Dalls right now, with 5 minutes to go. They’ve got a good cycle going.
– O’Sullivan and Jacques go in on a 2 on 1. O’Sullivan feeds it over to Jacques who gets a nice one timer off, but Turco sees it unfolding the whole way.
– First Oilers powerplay makes the Stars’ 26th ranked PP (at home) look pretty good.
– Decent period for Deslauriers, despite being down 2-0. He had to make some tough saves. But how a goalie that tall gets beat upstairs so much is beyond me.

2:15 – EDM – Visnovsky from Nilsson, Smid
Nilsson chips the puck from the sideboards back to Visnovsky who blasts it on net. Stone is in front of the net trying to tip it, and Stortini is creating troubles for Turco. The phantom tip causes Turco to mishandle the shot as it beats him down low.

Other Highlights
– Deslauriers panics Oil fans everywhere, trying to come out of the net on the powerplay to play the puck. He mishandles it right into Morrow’s legs, but luckily Morrow didn’t realize where it was right away.
– No goals scored on the first Oilers powerplay of the second, but I have to say it looked good, nonetheless. Good movement.
– Souray hits Morrow with a nice open ice hit just as he’s getting rid of the puck.
– Deslauriers makes a very nice save with Morrow all alone in front of the net for a tip (Souray was in the corner picking up his stick).
– Nice play by Visnovsky to break up a cross-ice pass on a 2-on-2 rush.
– Penner gets a glorious chance as Turco comes out way out of his net to challenge him. The puck sneaks past Turco, but a Star pokes it away out of danger.

16:53 – EDM – Smid from Moreau, Potulny
Smid just fires it on net through 3 different Stars players.. it banks off someone and past Turco.

Other Highlights
– Dallas gets some chances early on, but Staios and Deslauriers both hold the fort in the first few minutes.
– Midway through the Cogliano line put huge pressure on the Stars, generating a couple of chances due to some hard play by Cogliano in particular.
– Visnovsky wheels into the Stars zone with the puck.. he tries to beat Fistric along the boards, but Fistric has nothing of it, laying him out on his butt.
– Ladislav Smid, all smiles after he scored his first goal in 152 games, to tie the game.
– Souray drills Benn up against the boards as he was trying to sneak past. Great old-school Souray hit.
– The Cogliano line gets some good chances again with just over a minute left in the period. Moreau gets 3 shots off that shift, although one missed and one was tipped wide.
– Deslauriers gives a high five to Smid, who is grinning ear to ear, showing the big gap in his teeth.

No scoring.

Other Highlights
– Penner and Gagner go in on a rush with Staios just behind. Penner blasts a slapshot that Turco kicks out to Staios, but it’s in his feet.
– JDD makes a glove save on a one-timer by Moreau.
– Just noted at the halfway mark by Kevin Quinn that the shots are 35-35 with each goalie making 33 saves. Pretty good duel.
– Delsauriers gets completely lucky as he’s flopping on his back outside the net as Daley wheels behind the net and feeds it out front, but enough Oilers are there to prevent the puck from going in.
– Souray blasts one from the point, but Turco whips the glove out to make a big save. Souray has “upped his game in the last 40”, as Louie DeBrusk notes.
– The Oilers weather the storm as the Stars get one big chance in the last 10 seconds, with Staios re-directing a puck away from the slot.

1 – DAL – Richards – NO GOAL
– Richards tries to go short side with the shot, but Deslauriers kicks it out
1 – EDM – O’Sullivan – GOAL
– O’Sullivan slows down time right in front of the slot, stickhandles it several times and goes around to the blocker side and puts it in
2 – DAL – Neal – NO GOAL
– Neal comes in down the blocker side and tries to fire it top corner on the glove side but fires it too high.
2 – EDM – Gagner – NO GOAL
– Also tries to do the same as O’Sullivan.. stops in the slot, but unlike O’Sullivan, he tries to shoot it, up high… Turco gloves it in.
3 – DAL – Eriksson – GOAL
– JDD tries to poke check it, and lies flat down, legs spread, but Eriksson pushes it through, five hole.
3 – EDM – Nilsson – NO GOAL
– Nilsson comes in, swinging down the glove side, and looking to come across but he stops a bit and goes backhand glove side, but Turco reels it in.
4 – DAL – Ribeiro – NO GOAL
– Deslauriers poke checks Ribeiro who kind of loses it as he’s trying to bring it to the backhand.
4 – EDM – Penner – NO GOAL
– Turco lies on his side and poke checks the puck off Penner’s stick, who was looking to bring it across the crease and go backhand.
5 – DAL – Morrow – NO GOAL
– Morrow comes very wide from the blocker side. JDD cheats to the glove side a bit, and Morrow tries to put it past him blocker side but it hits the post.
5 – EDM – Horcoff – GOAL
– Horcoff takes a long run at the puck, picks it up at the dot, and skates in, firing it five hole through the wickets.

The Oilers got off to a very slow start in this game, but luckily Deslauriers played a relatively steady and solid game, keeping them in it the whole way. Deslauriers earned the first star, while Turco gets the 2nd… these could easily have been interchanged as both played great games. Third star goes to Smid who scored his first goal in nearly 2 full seasons. Souray also played a pretty hard, physical game. The third line created a lot of chances and energy as well, from the 2nd period onward.

Next game, Monday, 5:30 start vs. the Panthers in Florida.

  1. Haboiler says:

Lets hope they boys come out hitting this afternoon and keep some momentum up. I don’t like the comment on Tencer’s Twitter about Renney needing to get their act together in drills after 1 win. To follow Racki’s lead, my heart says 3-2 Oil while my head says 4-1 Dallas.

  2. Racki says:

I thought Renney’s quote was pretty funny. But yes, not good to hear that they’re on cruise control after just one win.

  3. Haboiler says:

Certainly not good to hear about thats for sure. 4 games left on this trip should interesting to see where we end up.

  4. Mr.Majestyk says:

He’s the master of the whip…The Whipmaster, The Whipmaster! I don’t know why I thought of that, its from a sketch on SNL long ago. Anyways, Renney’s got to keep cracking the whip on them.

  5. Haboiler says:

Acording to Sportsnet Smid is out and Arsene is playing with Vish.

  6. Racki says:

Really? I missed that… I watched the pre-game show, and they showed Smid with Visnovsky in their lines.

  7. Haboiler says:

It was on the ticker at the bottom, it had them as the 3rd pair with Staois/Strudwick as the 2nd pair?!?!?! I even clicked back to see if i was reading it correctly as i am getting over wisdom teeth removal so maybe I misread it but sure enough it was there. Maybe it was a mistake on their end?

  8. Racki says:

Well, I wouldn’t buy too much into the 2nd/3rd pairing stuff, but for sure Staios and Strudwick are paired.

  9. Racki says:

Yah Smid is still in the line up. Weird they had Arsene in…

  10. Haboiler says:

I guess they made an error, sorry boys.

  11. Racki says:

Hey no worries. Not your mistake. πŸ˜›

  12. Haboiler says:

nice play there by Penner in the crease, JDD holding his own so far.

  13. Racki says:

Yah, he weathered that PK pretty well (JDD)

  14. Haboiler says:

Everybody in Dallas must be watching College Football this afternoon, there sure are lots of empty seats.

  15. Racki says:

The Red Wings game was like that too.

    Damn, Benn scores

  16. Haboiler says:

Crap…. ok time for payback on the PP.

  17. Racki says:

PP time. Thats good, cause the last half has been all Dallas.

  18. LateNightOilFan says:

Hey everyone, just dropping by for a bit. Busy weekend between a hockey tourney 2-1/2 hrs away and two musicals near home. Sometimes it’s tough splitting time between two kids so the Oilers will have to do without me most of this weekend!

Good game so far, in spite of the goal that just happened. Turco is playing well this season, hopefully by saying so I’ve dropped off a fly by jinx in his direction…

edit – crap, goal #2, late and right after a pp too, that’s not good for momentum in our favour…

  19. Haboiler says:

FFS, why can’t we play a 20 minute period instead of consistenly 19 minute ones…. Nillson is a wimp on that puck.

  20. Racki says:

That was Gagner in the slot that lost the battle.. and I would be very hesitant to call it a 19 minute period played here. hehe I’d say they’d be lucky to have it called a 9 minute period. Dallas outworked from at least the last half onward. Not a good period. But I expect the Oil will come out jumping in the 2nd.

  21. Jay says:

18 shots against in the first period. JF Jacques not scoring on the 2v1. Allowing a goal against with less than what a minute left on the clock at the end of the first.

    It’s ugly folks…

  22. Racki says:

Jacques got a decent shot off, I give more of the credit to Turco for just reading that play and making a big save. O’Sullivan (?) telegraphed pass the whole way too though.

  23. Mr.Majestyk says:

Racki: Jacques got a decent shot off, I give more of the credit to Turco for just reading that play and making a big save. O’Sullivan (?) telegraphed pass the whole way too though.

These are the kinds of plays that differentiate a good player from a great player. A great player has the idea to wind up for a shot and then make the pass.

  24. Racki says:

Nice! Big blast by Visser… tipped?

  25. Steve-O says:

nilsson is the key to the oilers winning

  26. Haboiler says:

Atta boy Vish! My God Nilson is a frustrating player, can be so good and so bad…

  27. Racki says:

Nice high stick to the head

  28. Racki says:

ok deslauriers, please dont play the puck anymore. lol

  29. Racki says:

    Pretty good powerplay there.

  30. Haboiler says:

I sure like what Stone brings to this team.

  31. Racki says:

Yah me too Haboiler. I like what Quinn has gotten out of guys with that skill set though.

  32. Racki says:

Nice save by JDD there, coming out to challenge.

  33. Racki says:

The Oilers count like the Rough Riders do

  34. Haboiler says:

Good job on the PK here…

  35. Haboiler says:

What a pass there by Gagner… nice save too

  36. NorwegianOiler says:

Blast! Turco just HAD to save that one – Penner keeps getting quality chances, but hasn’t put them away like he did earlier in the season.

    Still a chance to win.

  37. Haboiler says:

Cogliano is over due big time.

  38. Racki says:

Yah no kidding. Considering how clutch he’s been in the past, he’ll get the game tying goal!

  39. Racki says:

OMG did Smid just score finally??

  40. Haboiler says:

    LADISLAV BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. NorwegianOiler says:

YEAH! Smid’s first in a million and fifty three games!

  42. Haboiler says:

152 Games thats a long friggin time lol.

  43. Racki says:

30 seconds left, faceoff our zone.. and they win the draw for once. πŸ˜›

  44. Racki says:

Great to see a big smile on Smid’s face

  45. Haboiler says:

    It was awesome!

  46. Haboiler says:

If we didn’t need the point so bad I would say put Ladislav up LMAO…

  47. NorwegianOiler says:

Either way this ends I think all the “I don’t care if we win or lose as long as they show good effort” fans must be satisfied. They kept going at them through the 2nd and 3rd, got rewarded and looked more comfortable with the puck than I’ve seen them so far this season. And, to my surprise, they kept going at Dallas after the 2-2 goal, looking for the winner. Earlier the equalizer would have been a cue to go into the defensive shell again…

  48. NorwegianOiler says:

I do suspect Turco will win this one for Dallas though…

  49. Racki says:

    Nice goal, O’Sully!

  50. gr8one says:

awesome, I just looked at the boxscore and saw that Smiddy got a goal!!!!!
