GAME NOTES

– Tencer twitter states that Gagner is day-to-day and gimping his way to the doctor today.
– Contrary to popular belief (including my own), Robert Nilsson wasn’t out of the last game line-up due to sucking. He missed the last game due to concussion-like symptoms.
– It’ll be at least a week before Ryan Stone is back.
– J.F. Jacques could make a return for Saturday’s game at home vs. the Blackhawks.
– UPDATE: According to Quinn, Gagner is likely to play tonight. If so, that obviously forces Strudwick out of the forward lines.

1ST PERIOD SUMMARY

8:26 – COL – Hejduk from Preissing, Duchene
In 4 on 4 play, Hejduk outbattles Gilbert for position in front of the net. JDD sprawls too far from the left post and Hejduk spins and puts it in on the left side.
16:39 – EDM – Horcoff from Hemsky, Visnovsky
Hemsky shoots a wrister from high in the zone that squeezes through Budaj and behind him and Horcoff pokes it in.
18:36 – COL – Hejduk from Durno, Duchene
The Avs work the cycle down low behind the net. Duchene goes down behind the goal line, passes it back out front to Hejduk who punches it home.

Other Highlights
– Nice rush on the powerplay by Penner. He blew past one of the Colorado d-men and got a nice shot off on Budaj.
– If you’re Souray, how do you clear the zone? Slap shot it off Duchene behind the net and down the ice. Ouch.
– Oilers have had a few powerplay chances so far this period, and I’m not sure if they’ve noticed just yet that the guys in white are not on their team.
– Announcers point out that the rink is 85 feet wide, but somehow Strudwick manages to blast a slapshot off Reddox from 3 feet out.

2ND PERIOD SUMMARY

0:21 – EDM – Brule from Reddox
Reddox on the rush passes it over to Brule who slaps it short side past Budaj.
1:14 – COL – Jones from Wolski, Hannan
Hemsky turns it over in the neutral zone. Jones crosses the blue line and snaps it past Smid who’s blocking the view of JDD and the puck beats JDD on the blocker side.
11:04 – COL – Cumiskey from Clark, Tucker
Cumiskey steps in to the dot on Deslaurier’s glove side and puts it upstairs, glove side.
19:45 – EDM – Gagner from Visnovsky, Smid
The shot from Visnovsky at the point is kicked out by Budaj right to Gagner on the side of the net and he makes no mistake on it.

Other Highlights
– Ferrarro mentions an interview with Brule about how this is the best he’s looked since Junior. Brule goes on to mention how confident he is in himself now and how he feels he’s going to score soon (which he does this period).
– Brule drives Stastny hard into the boards in the Oilers zone.
– Hemsky makes another questionable decision from 10 feet out in a good shooting position, electing to pass to a very covered Horcoff.
– Visnovsky gets the puck over to Hemsky who is waiting on the far post, staring at a wide 4×6 and he fires it past the net. On the next shift, the Avs capitalize.
– Moreau gets absolutely pasted by a hit by Wilson. Moreau is looking down and Wilson throws the elbow in the face. Stortini comes to the rescue and drops them with Wilson. Not much of a fight, but the judges give Stortini the win on punch count.
– Chris Cuthbert just mentioned that 13 minutes in and Gilbert hasn’t played a shift in the 2nd yet.
– With 5:30 left, Gilbert finally gets a shift on the PK.
– Moreau left down the tunnel at the 3:00 minute mark (likely due to the hit he received earlier in the period).
– Oilers are 0 for 5 on the powerplay so far. The Avs have been very aggressive on Hemsky and the point men, and they haven’t been able to work it to the net much.

3RD PERIOD SUMMARY

2:45 – EDM – PP – Potulny from Gilbert, Gagner
– Gagner goes behind the net, passes it out front to Gilbert. Gilbert shoots it at Budaj from close range and the rebound comes to Potulny who has a lot of net to shoot at.
11:08 – EDM – O’Sullivan from Brule
This line looks great in the Avs zone, and work hard down low. Brule comes out front with the puck and jams it off Budaj’s pads. It comes out to O’Sullivan who hammers it home.
19:17 – EDM – Hemsky from Deslauriers
– Hemsky beats an Avalanche player who tries to squeeze him out on the boards and puts it into the open net.

Other Highlights
– Have hardly noticed Dean Arsene out there, but that’s a good thing. That means he’s playing good hockey and not making big mistakes. Quinn using him and Strudwick a bit more in the 3rd in a tie game as well, so that speaks volumes of how he is playing well.
– In the chat, Steve-O predicted a quick goal after a 5-on-3 PK and it happened. Trogdor then later states Gilbert is due, and he gets an assist. Racki then predicts a goal from O’Sullivan, and it comes true a few minutes later as well. Who are we guessing next??
– Jones crosses the blue line into the Oilers’ zone, and Souray steps up and drops him on his ass with a nice hit on the boards, Iggy Ulanov-style.
– With 5 minutes left, the Avs rush down the ice and get behind the defense (Arsene and Strudwick) and get a series of good shots on JDD, but he holds the fort and keeps the Oilers in the lead.
– The Red Ox makes a great shot block with 2 minutes left. Craig MacTavish would be proud!

POST-GAME RANT

Well, not a pretty win. Any time the Oilers would score, it seemed like the Avalanche would score one right after. Lots of offense in the 2nd, and all Oilers offense in the 3rd. With the shots 33-18 in favor of the Oilers, there’s no way it should be this close. JDD played a very weak game early on but solidified his play midway through the second (once the Avs had back to back 5-on-3’s) and kept it going.

Credit to the Oilers for keeping the pressure on, all throughout the game.

Part of the story of the game was Wilson’s hit on Moreau. Moreau picked up a pass with his head down, heading with speed through the neutral zone and Wilson sent the reminder that you keep your head up, giving him a face full of shoulder. Moreau later left the game. I would imagine he suffered a concussion on the play.

Next game is Saturday night versus the Blackhawks at home. Looks like it’s an 8:00 start and will be televised on CBC.

Good thing Jeff has long legs…

  5. Racki says:

Steve-O: No, it didn’t happen, I mean, that’s the prediction… Hemsky from Arsene. Unfortunately, no, he still is pointless in the NHL. Hey did anyone here know this isn’t the first time Arsene played for Edmonton? He used to play for the Edmonton Ice as well.. whaddya know?

  6. Steve-O says:

actually i want to change my choice for oiler to score…i want smid to get his first since 2007/08

  7. Trogdor says:

Make yourself look big JDD. Like a cougar attack

  8. Racki says:

JDD is giving me a heartattack, even though he’s making the saves.

the ice games were great…i remember seeing the home opener their first season against the hitmen and there was something like 6 fights

  10. gr8one says:

oh and Racki, did you see my betamax comment in the kevin smith thread?

if not, what are the odds of two betamax comments in two days! lol

  11. Racki says:

    Gr8one: lol,no I missed that.

LNOF: good call on the JDD mask being new. Lots of Alberta love on it.

  12. Racki says:

Steve-O: actually i want to change my choice for oiler to score…i want smid to get his first since 2007/08

You can’t just do that.. too late, Hemsky will score.

  13. Trogdor says:

How man of Smid’s 3 goals have been empty netters?

  14. Racki says:

    Atta be Red Ox!

  15. Trogdor says:

    Attaboy Liam

  16. LateNightOilFan says:

You know, I really like Reddox. He’s like the little engine that could.

  17. Racki says:

I like Reddox too. Don’t think I’ve ever had any complaints about him.

  18. LateNightOilFan says:

    Breath holding time.

  19. Trogdor says:

    Keep Budaj deep.

  20. Racki says:

Come on boys, hold the fort

  21. Trogdor says:

Ha ha! We need more bold predictions!

  22. LateNightOilFan says:

    Who called Hemmer?

  23. gr8one says:

    what did Reddox do?

*sigh* I wish I got the Oilers games on TV. :(

  24. Racki says:

haha, look who the goal scorer is. Shit, I was going to say it would be an empty netter too.

  25. Trogdor says:

gr8one: what did Reddox do?*sigh* I wish I got the Oilers games on TV. :(

    Good shot block.

  26. Racki says:

    LateNightOilFan: Who called Hemmer?

Steve-O on that one. Tried to change it up to Smid, wouldn’t let him and I said “You can’t just do that.. too late, Hemsky will score.”

gr8one: what did Reddox do?*sigh* I wish I got the Oilers games on TV. :(

Made a great shot block with 2 mins left.

  27. Trogdor says:

Get Smid out there for another empty net.

  28. Racki says:

Not the prettiest of wins. With some better goaltending, it would have been though. But good to see them win that one.

  29. Steve-O says:

next game we start calling scorers early

  30. Trogdor says:

    Dreger is lighting up JDD

  31. LateNightOilFan says:

Ugly win in a nice way. Very much needed. Shaky first half for Jeff but then he was solid and showed some battle. Good learning experience for him.

Don’t look now but he got an assist on that EN goal, that means he might want to play the puck more.

  32. Bostonoiler says:

Great win by the Oil. Much needed by them tonight. Gonna need the same effort as they got after the Stortini fight on Saturday night when the Hawks come in.

  33. Trogdor says:

Hopefully we can build off this one and get on a roll again at home. Entertaining game, great finish.

  34. Pennzoil27 says:

Trogdor: Get Smid out there for another empty net.

After going this long without a goal it would almost be an injustice for him to get it into an open net.

  35. Steve-O says:

good game…now time to get my beauty sleep before meeting day tomorrow

  36. LateNightOilFan says:

Wow, DET so robbed by a disallowed goal in their game.

  37. Horpensky says:

Reddox had a great game, had 15 mins of ice time tonight. Well deserved. I can see Quinn growing to like his game.

Smid and Lubo +3 tonight, the Czechoslovakian pair does it again!

  38. Racki says:

Yah Smid + Visnovsky is such a great pairing (Visnovsky makes anyone look good, but those two are perfect together). Also, I love the Reddox O’Sullivan Brule line. It was like a small upgrade, bumping Potulny out, but it worked well… and good to see O’Sully get another one.

  39. DropIt says:

Nice win for the Oilers tonight. I’m just glad they kept it out of OT. JDD wasn’t spectacular by any means, but he got the job done. Good game from Reddox and Smid noteably.
Also props to Wilson for catching Moreau with his head down with a clean shoulder, despite the opinions of some Oiler fans I have heard from.

  40. LateNightOilFan says:

Not sure on that hit DropIt – when it first happened I couldn’t tell if he led with the elbow, then from the TV replay it did look like the elbow got him first. Then someone on the main page of HF Boards has a pic where it looks like the shoulder made impact first. I’d really like to see it frame by frame.

However, opinions will question it whether they have Oiler coloured glasses or not because it was his head that was impacted. I agree he had his head down, a clean hit to me in that case is shoulder on shoulder, not shoulder on head.

  41. Racki says:

There’s a new post up now about head shots, feel free to all weigh in there.
