GAME NOTES

- Tencer twitter states that Gagner is day-to-day and gimping his way to the doctor today.
- Contrary to popular belief (including my own), Robert Nilsson wasn’t out of the last game line-up due to sucking. He missed the last game due to concussion-like symptoms.
- It’ll be at least a week before Ryan Stone is back.
- J.F. Jacques could make a return for Saturday’s game at home vs. the Blackhawks.
- UPDATE: According to Quinn, Gagner is likely to play tonight. If so, that obviously forces Strudwick out of the forward lines.

1ST PERIOD SUMMARY

8:26 – COL – Hejduk from Preissing, Duchene
In 4 on 4 play, Hejduk outbattles Gilbert for position in front of the net. JDD sprawls too far from the left post and Hejduk spins and puts it in on the left side.
16:39 – EDM – Horcoff from Hemsky, Visnovsky
Hemsky shoots a wrister from high in the zone that squeezes through Budaj and behind him and Horcoff pokes it in.
18:36 – COL – Hejduk from Durno, Duchene
The Avs work the cycle down low behind the net. Duchene goes down behind the goal line, passes it back out front to Hejduk who punches it home.

Other Highlights
- Nice rush on the powerplay by Penner. He blew past one of the Colorado d-men and got a nice shot off on Budaj.
- If you’re Souray, how do you clear the zone? Slap shot it off Duchene behind the net and down the ice. Ouch.
- Oilers have had a few powerplay chances so far this period, and I’m not sure if they’ve noticed just yet that the guys in white are not on their team.
- Announcers point out that the rink is 85 feet wide, but somehow Strudwick manages to blast a slapshot off Reddox from 3 feet out.

2ND PERIOD SUMMARY

0:21 – EDM – Brule from Reddox
Reddox on the rush passes it over to Brule who slaps it short side past Budaj.
1:14 – COL – Jones from Wolski, Hannan
Hemsky turns it over in the neutral zone. Jones crosses the blue line and snaps it past Smid who’s blocking the view of JDD and the puck beats JDD on the blocker side.
11:04 – COL – Cumiskey from Clark, Tucker
Cumiskey steps in to the dot on Deslaurier’s glove side and puts it upstairs, glove side.
19:45 – EDM – Gagner from Visnovsky, Smid
The shot from Visnovsky at the point is kicked out by Budaj right to Gagner on the side of the net and he makes no mistake on it.

Other Highlights
- Ferrarro mentions an interview with Brule about how this is the best he’s looked since Junior. Brule goes on to mention how confident he is in himself now and how he feels he’s going to score soon (which he does this period).
- Brule drives Stastny hard into the boards in the Oilers zone.
- Hemsky makes another questionable decision from 10 feet out in a good shooting position, electing to pass to a very covered Horcoff.
- Visnovsky gets the puck over to Hemsky who is waiting on the far post, staring at a wide 4×6 and he fires it past the net. On the next shift, the Avs capitalize.
- Moreau gets absolutely pasted by a hit by Wilson. Moreau is looking down and Wilson throws the elbow in the face. Stortini comes to the rescue and drops them with Wilson. Not much of a fight, but the judges give Stortini the win on punch count.
- Chris Cuthbert just mentioned that 13 minutes in and Gilbert hasn’t played a shift in the 2nd yet.
- With 5:30 left, Gilbert finally gets a shift on the PK.
- Moreau left down the tunnel at the 3:00 minute mark (likely due to the hit he received earlier in the period).
- Oilers are 0 for 5 on the powerplay so far. The Avs have been very aggressive on Hemsky and the point men, and they haven’t been able to work it to the net much.

3RD PERIOD SUMMARY

2:45 – EDM – PP – Potulny from Gilbert, Gagner
- Gagner goes behind the net, passes it out front to Gilbert. Gilbert shoots it at Budaj from close range and the rebound comes to Potulny who has a lot of net to shoot at.
11:08 – EDM – O’Sullivan from Brule
This line looks great in the Avs zone, and work hard down low. Brule comes out front with the puck and jams it off Budaj’s pads. It comes out to O’Sullivan who hammers it home.
19:17 – EDM – Hemsky from Deslauriers
- Hemsky beats an Avalanche player who tries to squeeze him out on the boards and puts it into the open net.

Other Highlights
- Have hardly noticed Dean Arsene out there, but that’s a good thing. That means he’s playing good hockey and not making big mistakes. Quinn using him and Strudwick a bit more in the 3rd in a tie game as well, so that speaks volumes of how he is playing well.
- In the chat, Steve-O predicted a quick goal after a 5-on-3 PK and it happened. Trogdor then later states Gilbert is due, and he gets an assist. Racki then predicts a goal from O’Sullivan, and it comes true a few minutes later as well. Who are we guessing next??
- Jones crosses the blue line into the Oilers’ zone, and Souray steps up and drops him on his ass with a nice hit on the boards, Iggy Ulanov-style.
- With 5 minutes left, the Avs rush down the ice and get behind the defense (Arsene and Strudwick) and get a series of good shots on JDD, but he holds the fort and keeps the Oilers in the lead.
- The Red Ox makes a great shot block with 2 minutes left. Craig MacTavish would be proud!

POST-GAME RANT

Well, not a pretty win. Any time the Oilers would score, it seemed like the Avalanche would score one right after. Lots of offense in the 2nd, and all Oilers offense in the 3rd. With the shots 33-18 in favor of the Oilers, there’s no way it should be this close. JDD played a very weak game early on but solidified his play midway through the second (once the Avs had back to back 5-on-3′s) and kept it going.

Credit to the Oilers for keeping the pressure on, all throughout the game.

Part of the story of the game was Wilson’s hit on Moreau. Moreau picked up a pass with his head down, heading with speed through the neutral zone and Wilson sent the reminder that you keep your head up, giving him a face full of shoulder. Moreau later left the game. I would imagine he suffered a concussion on the play.

Next game is Saturday night versus the Blackhawks at home. Looks like it’s an 8:00 start and will be televised on CBC.

  1. Racki says:

Oh my did Moreau get his bell rung.

  2. gr8one says:

gr8one: What’s up with Brule? Is he injured again, or a healthy scratch?

lol, I specifically looked at the lineup twice looking for Brule, don’t know how I missed him.

  3. LateNightOilFan says:

    That’s right Storts!

I thought Moreau had his head down though, not sure how high the elbow was there on the hit.

  4. Racki says:

Wow, not a good hit, and that stinks we are short handed after that elbow. P.S., big credit to Stortini for dropping them and standing up for his teammate.

  5. LateNightOilFan says:

Oh, definitely missed the elbow there.

  6. Steve-O says:

moreau is going to fuck some shit up

  7. Racki says:

Hey Pennzoil, you’re getting your wish so far as Gilbert has been benched for the second.

  8. Steve-O says:

we need a big kill and a quick one after

  9. LateNightOilFan says:

Ther ya go Pennzoil, looks like Gilbert may have got himself benched.

    This game is getting ugly.

  10. Racki says:

5-on-3… could be 5-2 soon. Time to break out the 70s Flyers-style hockey.

  11. Pennzoil27 says:

Racki: Hey Pennzoil, you’re getting your wish so far as Gilbert has been benched for the second.

    bout time.

  12. Racki says:

JDD has kind of stunk tonight, but he’s keeping things close on this PK.

  13. Pennzoil27 says:

Back on the ice now :(

  14. LateNightOilFan says:

Good job by JD on the 5 on 3. Now let’s kill the rest of the penalty off.

  15. Racki says:

Ahh man you’ve got to be kidding me. Another penalty.

  16. Steve-O says:

    well this sucks

  17. Steve-O says:

im going to end up drunk if this continues

  18. LateNightOilFan says:

Av players seem to have slippery feet this game.

  19. Racki says:

If Moreau would hit like Wilson hit him (and he definitely has in the past), I would be his #1 fan.

  20. LateNightOilFan says:

Well Horc had slippery feet there too, surprised they didn’t call him for a dive. That would have been about par for the course the way this game is going.

  21. Racki says:

    Niceeee Gagner!

  22. Trogdor says:

Good to time to log in. Gags brings us back to within 1.

  23. Pennzoil27 says:

Racki: If Moreau would hit like Wilson hit him (and he definitely has in the past), I would be his #1 fan.

Its almost time for the coaching staff to make a bold statement and strip him of his “C” Ethan is just a shade of his former self and I think the main reason is injuries

  24. LateNightOilFan says:

There! Gags! Needed that, dying seconds too.

Have to laugh about his ‘stache though…pretty cheesy looking! (All for a good cause though)

  25. Steve-O says:

Steve-O: we need a big kill and a quick one after

    called it

  26. Racki says:

Another point for me in the pool.. sorry Phar. :P

  27. Racki says:

2 goals per side in that period

  28. Trogdor says:

Well hopefully we get a 2 man advantage in the 3rd. That was a few in a row for us.

  29. LateNightOilFan says:

OT, got to see the Olympic torch today, pretty cool. One of the torch-bearer meeting places was at my son’s school, he got some really good pics and got to go on the bus and hold one of the torches. Plus a friend of my daughters was one of the torch-bearers. Didn’t go to downtown Halifax as my son had a game tonight, just as well as with all the reporters mobbing Crosby we wouldn’t have seen him anyway. But they had all kinds of activities going on there, would have liked to go down there so I’m happy we got to see the relay earlier in the day.

  30. Racki says:

Someone should tell McKenzie to open his eyes. The point of contact from Wilson’s arm was Moreau’s lips. That was straight up all forearm/elbow right to the kisser. You know the Oil will send in that tape. In beta format!!

  31. Trogdor says:

When was the last time we were outshooting an opponent 25-13 going into the 3rd? Hopefully we keep the pressure on and tie this one up.

  32. Racki says:

oops, misunderstood… I thought he was saying that Wilson hit Moreau in the shoulder, not that he used his shoulder. I don’t think it should matter what the hell a player uses to crack a guy in the head with, personally.

  33. Racki says:

4 goals on 13 shots? Ouch, JDD.

  34. Trogdor says:

Time for Tommy to score and get some love.

  35. Trogdor says:

Not a goal but an assist will do!!!

  36. Racki says:

Trogdor: Will assist give him some love?

  37. Racki says:

Now it’s O’Sullivan’s turn to score (hoping that the more we talk about guys scoring the more it will happen)

  38. Pennzoil27 says:

He will contribute to 2 more against before he contributes to another one for.

  39. Trogdor says:

It was instrumental in scoring the goal, but assists tend to fade away. Some good play after the goal. Nice 2 on 1 D by steady Steve then come back with a rush.

  40. LateNightOilFan says:

Agreed Racki – sounds like the league is excusing those hits if the player has his head down?

And we’re all tied up! Honestly this is one ugly game but if the Oilers come out on top it will be a huge morale boost.

  41. Racki says:

Arsene – fairly invisible tonight… which is good, means he’s playing well and how he should.

  42. Trogdor says:

Eep… That was an unfortunate bounce to the slot.

  43. Racki says:

Racki: Now it’s O’Sullivan’s turn to score (hoping that the more we talk about guys scoring the more it will happen)

Hahhaaha we’re 3 for 3 on predictions tonight, boys… who’s next to make a guess?

  44. LateNightOilFan says:

    Sully!!!! Clutch!

  45. Trogdor says:

Woohoo!!! Who else could use a goal… Let’s talk some more about that.

  46. Steve-O says:

    Racki:
Hahhaaha we’re 3 for 3 on predictions tonight, boys… who’s next to make a guess?

    hemsky?

  47. Trogdor says:

Shots are 29-15 now. Not the time to sit back. Smell the blood, go for the kill!
