GDT – Oilers 3, Canucks 7 – Nov 28, 2009 @ 8:00PM – CBC – Game 27
PRE-GAME RANT
The Oilers are coming off a mostly impressive performance against the league’s best team. Most, including myself, didn’t think the Oilers had the horses in the line-up (especially without Hemsky) to run with the Sharks, but they managed to get a point, despite blowing a 3-1 lead early on and a 4-3 lead with under 2 minutes to go in the game. Inspiring performances by Brule, Potulny, Cogliano and Penner, in particular, helped keep the Oilers in the game the whole time. Deslauriers also made some key saves at points of the game, despite looking a little shakey at points.
The Canucks are coming off 3 wins in their last 4 games, including back-to-back wins over the Avalanche (including an 8-2 romping), and a 4-1 victory over the Kings. The Oilers are going to have to be at the top of their game again to win this one. Look for good performances from Brule and Potulny again to lead the way. Also, the Oilers played last night, so will Dubnyk get the start or will it be Deslauriers again? That remains to be seen, but I’ll update this post accordingly when information is available.

GAME NOTES
- Ryan Stone and Robert Nilsson are both “ready to play”, according to Tom Renney. However neither are likely to be in the line up tonight.
1ST PERIOD SUMMARY
3:16 – VAN – PP – Ehrhoff unassisted
Ehrhoff blasts it upstairs past Deslauriers blocker side, as Deslauriers was very deep in the net. Potulny tipped it slightly up high and it may have fooled JDD.
5:01 – VAN – Burrows from H. Sedin, D. Sedin
Staios strays from the front of the net and is forced to rush back to cover Burrows, but can’t get there in time. Burrows dekes around Deslauriers and puts it in past the sprawling goalie.
7:04 – VAN – PP – Raymond from Ehrhoff, Kesler
The Canucks bring it in to the zone. Raymond pulls back for the wrister and Staios kneels to block, but the long shot beats Deslauriers.
8:25 – VAN – D. Sedin from H. Sedin, Mitchell
Daniel and Henrik out hussle Smid and O’Sullivan behind the net. Daniel gets around the front of the net and puts it up high on JDD.
14:44 – EDM – PP – Brule from Gagner
The Oilers get caught on the powerplay on a 2 on 1 into their own end, but recover the puck. Brule and Gagner and Penner rush into the Canucks zone. Brule wires one off the bar that flips into the slot and Gagner appears to tap it in past Luongo.
19:43 – VAN – Glass from Bernier
Glass out battles a couple of Oilers and wheels around the zone, then puts it up under the bar on Dubnyk’s blocker side.
Other Highlights
- Oilers show jump on the first shift. O’Sullivan sets up Horcoff nicely but Luongo makes the save, and then Jacques steps on the ice briefly and hammers Kesler in the Oilers’ zone on a dump in.
- Canucks first powerplay, Deslauriers makes a couple of nice saves through traffic.
- Gagner and Penner go in on a rush. Gagner does a juke / fake shot and then fires it right after beating Luongo, but not the bar as it rings out quickly.
- Strudwick gets hit by Hordichuk and takes exception and they go. Strudwick lands the shots early on, starting the mower on Hordichuk. Hordichuk lands some good shots after though and gets Strudwick off balance and takes him down.
- Deslauriers throws a punch on a Canuck player getting too close to the blue paint, and gets a penalty for roughing.
- Deslauriers gets yanked after 4 goals in under 9 minutes.
- 12:30 in, the shots are 13-1 in favor of the Canucks.
- O’Sullivan gets double teamed by a couple of Canucks, then hit two Canucks himself and then drops Bernier right after.
- At this rate, not sure the summaries will continue. This game is brutal, unless you’re a Canuck fan.
2ND PERIOD SUMMARY
6:06 – EDM – McDonald from O’Marra
McDonald skates into the zone and shoots it upstairs across Luongo’s body from the right boards and over Luongo’s glove.
7:10 – EDM – PP – Penner from Brule, Gagner
Brule cross-seam passes over to Penner who beats Luongo before he can get over to the other side.
12:08- VAN – PP – Edler from Raymond, Kesler
The shot comes from the point through a lot of traffic. Dubnyk had no chance to see that as it beats him upstairs.
Other Highlights
- Penner gets a chance early on from in close but hits Luongo in the crest.
- Souray absolutely blasts one from the point that Luongo pulls in with the glove but it hurts him. He drops down shaking his hand and winces.
- 5 minutes in, the Oilers show some good jump so far. They haven’t rolled over just yet.
- Dubnyk makes a nice save going post to post to stop a one-timer from Burrows.
- Stortini throws a nice big hit on Hordichuk, leading to a rush in which McDonald scores.
- Souray tears the leather off the ball again, nailing Wellwood behind the net.. just a bit outside. The Oil are really pouring it on this period.
- The Oilers lose their momentum and get trapped in their own zone for a couple of shifts. Brule ends up getting a bad call against him. The Canucks score on that powerplay.
- Luongo gets caught behind the net by McDonald, coughs up the puck, but lucks out making a save from behind the net on his butt, preventing McDonald from getting around out front.
- After a save, Moreau flies into the crease area and drills Daniel Sedin from behind. He gets a penalty for this, however Mitchell and Burrows each take one for retaliating as well.
3RD PERIOD SUMMARY
9:59 – VAN – PP – Samuelsson from Raymond, Edler
Cross-seam pass to Samuelsson and he blasts it past Doobie.
Other Highlights
- The top line looks great tonight, despite the bad score. Brule and Penner just have a great chemistry. I’d almost say moreso than Penner and Hemsky – so far.
- Not much reporting in this period because there’s not much to report on.
- Moreau missed a wide open net on a rebound off of a Cogliano shot that was kicked out to the other side of the net.
POST-GAME REPORT
Shitty game. Make some moves Tambi. Honestly, one positive though is that the Oilers came out strong in the 2nd to at least make it respectable for a while, but they again lost it later on. Good performance by the top line. Outside of that, pretty abysmal. Next game, Dec 3rd vs. Detroit – four nights off to right the ship. But it’ll take a lot more than four nights to do that.

I think this 6 game road trip is going to show the direction Tambi will go. At this point if they are any worse than 2-4, its time to move at least 1 big D, Staois, Moreau and Nillson. We need to give some big minutes to Gags, Cogs, O Sully and Brule. With Eberle and MPS and possilby Omark in the wings, we can keep no more than 2 of those 4. Time to see which ones want to stay. If OSully cant get it going quickly, I can see him being dangled in Dec.
What a shot by Souray
Well if it makes anyone feel any better, I’m watching with a Habs fan who just told me ‘At least your team didn’t get your hopes up just to let you down’.
lol Gr8one..
I think he’s just Bi-pOiler. You heard it hear first, folks!
LNOF: I watched that game, and the Habs were down 2-0.. he should be happy getting the point. What a fantastic game though. Carey Price stole that point. At least, he hung in there enough for the team to come back from 2-0.
hahha, that was pretty good. Gene?
Yeah – he didn’t watch the game – I told him what you said earlier. He’s just jaded is all. First one to dump on his own team but first one to defend them against others too. Die hard like the rest of us.
Nice… despite this game sucking, that’s what I like to see… a youngster getting a goal.
More life this period, good. Devan’s made some decent saves. And he plays the puck quickly behind the net too!
MacD’s first NHL goal!!! Wooohooo!
we shall prevail.
Racki dude, wtf is this, and why can’t we say the same thing twice?
“Duplicate comment detected; it looks as though you’ve already said that!”
lets get the next one…
That’s a typical Habs fan. It was fun to watch them boo a line for a few seconds and then cheer them on the same shift a few seconds later.
Uh oh… here we go…. lets get the next one…
Wow… get the funk out.
OMG this is now a completely different game. Just wow.
And it’s not even half over either…let’s get in Bobby Lou’s head please!
I know you can’t post the same comment twice in a row (same thing on a lot of forums/etc.) because it prevents you accidentally submitting the same thing twice. But I had no idea it would prevent you from saying something from a while back..?? weird.
geezus h krist.
this team is going to make us ALL bi-pOiler.
For the record, I currently like the Oilers.
yeah, probably just a spam prevention failsafe.
wow, keep up the pressure boys…
I gotta give them credit.. they stunk it up in the 1st, but they’re showing balls here now and that’s the reaction I think anyone would want to see.
nice saves Doobie…
Nice that O’Marra got his first NHL point assisting on MacDonald’s first NHL goal.
Agreed
*waits for angry messages from B.O.*
Bad call on Brule…
Wow – that one had eyes.
honestly, I just want some serious, consistant suckage, so that it forces Tambi’s hand.(hopefully)
Scouting report on Oilers rookie goalies: “Shoot High”
We lucked out on that penalty call – would be nice to capitalize here.
Top line is playing pretty well…
canucks fans are brutal, wtf were they booing?
It’s been a theme especially on JDD – he’s a big goalie that makes himself look small. More of a confidence/experience issue I think. Definitely has lots to work on.
Were they booing or Louing?
ya know, really…I wasn’t here for the first period, but the nucks have 6 goals on 13 shots, and with Khabi in net, this could easily be tied, or even us leading.
oh…lol, maybe…I always mistake that.
Moreau annihilates Daniel
I’m really not sure about that – maybe tied – Nucks were swarming the net pretty fierce. Out shot 16-4 in the first. Who knows.
Nucks have 6 goals on 24 shots btw.
What is this – Canucks players the only interviews tonight?
Then again, the Oilers are probably declining interviews right now.
Luckily no one in their right mind picked up Deslauriers in any hockey pool on the planet.
lol, whoops, I just looked again, and yeah…dunno what shot total I was looking at.
and of course, like I said, I wasn’t able to watch the first period.
so, hey…ya know, I’ll just shut my big fat trap. :p
lol…actually, that is incorrect.
somebody did in one of the pools I’m in.
my response was “wtf?”
The Oil had 13 SOG in the 2nd, maybe that’s what you saw? Consider yourself lucky that you weren’t able to watch the first!
Jeff’s GAA this game 28.51 & .636sv%. Ouch…
Is it too early to say that Brule looks as good on the top line as Hemsky does? Not quite as fancy, but doesn’t need to be.
Shit, how’d that stay out!
That’s the second time Simpson has said what a challenging night it’s been for Loungo.
no, but imagine him there with Hemsky as the center.
Moreau needs to be gone.
there is no way he offers more to this team than he takes away.
Gr8: Yah I know you or someone else has been beating that drum (Penner, Brule, Hemsky line).
