Schremp signs, and other Oilers stuff..

"Rob Schremp hockey ain't about tackey tattoos"

A bit slow on this one (I actually worked at work today), but the Oilers and Rob Schremp have agreed to a 1-year, 2-way contract that will see Schremp earn $715K in the NHL or $75k in the AHL. Rumors are that the Islanders would scoop him up should the Oilers place him on waivers (Schremp will need to clear waivers if he is sent to Springfield). So it’s likely he’ll earn the big cash… somewhere this year. And that means somewhere this year we’ll get to see some “Rob Schremp hockey”.

In other news, I just got back from the Pro Life Hockey megastore. First off, this store is incredibly impressive. It’s huge, they have a lot of hockey gear in stock, from hockey equipment to memorabilia. The store is also very well lit, which might seem like an odd thing to comment on, but it really lets you get a good look of everything in the store without having to get right up close and personal, including Sheldon Souray (who was there signing autographs). I got my vintage home jersey signed (that makes Gagner, Staios, Hemsky, Gilbert, Pouliot, Souray so far) and he also gave a signed 8×10. In front of me was a cute little girl who Souray chatted it up with. In fact, he pretty much patiently chatted it up with anyone and allowed anyone to take pictures with him. I also was about to leave after getting my jersey signed when he offered the extra 8×10. I have to say, it was so much more pleasant than those West Edmonton Mall autograph sessions where they herd you through like cattle, and it was really nice actually getting in a word with Sheldon.

Lastly, I’ll just touch on the Comrie stuff. Dan Tencer’s twitter has a new update: “Comrie spoke today and confirmed talks with Oilers.” Well there you have it. The Oilers are definitely in the running here. I’m not so sure why Tambellini is so secretive about it.

Edit: One more thing to add. Looks like the Falcons could be a much better team this year, but also a much bigger, and more experience team. They recently signed a giant – 6’8 248 lb foward Riley Emmerson. He was drafted by the Minnesota Wild (as if they need another monster on that team). They also will be inviting 4 veteran AHLers to their camp in Chris Armstrong (Defense), Nathan Barrett (Forward), Bryan Lundbohm (Forward) and Adam Henrich (Forward). It’s good to see more commitment this year to our farm team both by Tambellini and the Oilers, and by Springfield.

Updated with some Springfield info at the bottom.

Well, finally the Schremp saga will end one way or another. Dimebag had a pretty good post on it on the OMB. I won’t like it as I hate that application. It’s on the first page of the Schremp thead there.

I have always rooted for this guy. At least we will finally know if he can do his thing at the NHL level. If he does, I hope it’s here. He could be cheap insurance for trading a Nilsson or another of the many second liners we have lots of.

  3. Racki says:

Yah, I wouldn’t call myself a “Schremp fan” so much anymore as a Schremp supporter. I want to see him do well, whether it is here or somewhere else. A lot of people get on him and say he sucks, or he can’t skate, or what have you. I do think he’s fairly unpolished, but he’s also a young kid even though he’s been battling for a spot for awhile now. He’s got some potential high end talent in his passing, and he *possibly* has a decent shot (we haven’t really seen it much since he re-invented himself as a playmaker). But he’s got some issues when he doesn’t have the puck. That, along with the other skilled second-liner types here that we have in bulk, will make it very tough for him to find a spot here.

But with a new coach here, you never know what might happen. Maybe some trades will happen like you say, Chucker. And that might open a spot for Schremp. And well, I know the guy is a pretty hard worker, and has been trying to improve his weak points in his game. You just never know… he might blow some people away at training camp now that he has an opportunity (I hate to beat a dead horse, but there’s no way anyone can tell me he got a fair shot last year).

To Chucker’s point of Schremp replacing Nilsson:

I agree with you here. We haven’t seen enough of Schremp to be a good enough judge, but I would guess that if he played the same number of games as Nilsson did last year, he’d come away with atleast that number of points. Even if Schremp got sheltered minutes and lots of PP time it could benefit the team. And we’d be saving some money against the cap and we could sign Malhotra or someone like that. Whats that other guys name that Racki always brings up? Betts.

  5. Racki says:

Horpensky also mentioned David Steckel (Washington Capitals). He would need to be acquired via trade though. I’ll also throw out Joe Pavelski (56.3% on the dot last year). He would be a more expensive trade, but he brings a more complete game than most names mentioned too. He also can score goals (25 last year, and 59 pts), and plays both the PK and the PP. He does have some short comings though. He’s not a big player. But if Tambellini is looking for guys that can play a complete game, he’s a good suggestion. I’m not so sure the Sharks would be anxious to move him though, but there have been some rumors around town about the Sharks and Oilers making a deal.

  6. Mr.Majestyk says:

I think Pavelski’s emergence as a legit second line center is part of the reason why the Sharks were able to move Marleau to play wing with Thornton, and why its often rumoured that the Sharks would like to deal Marleau. Pavelski is definitely a player, but I think he is in San Jose’s long term plans.

At this point I’m fine with waiting to see what our current roster is capable of under the new regime.

  7. Racki says:

Yah I’m sure you’re right about Pavelski going nowhere. We’d definitely have a better chance scooping up Marleau, and his contract is too rich for my blood! ;)

Bump! Mr. Rob Schremp hit waivers today. I think this saga is finally over. Time to look at Europe and KHL for Mr. Schremp. Awesome tatty though! (sic)

I thought i wandered into the bizzaro world for a minute. I already knew that Schremp was on waivers and when I first started reading the post I thought the Oilers claimed him…and then Racki goes on to mention how nice Sheldon Souray was at the autograph signing.

    I had a nice laugh.

I second that. I was all “no way…” but then took a quick glance at the posts time stamp. Looks like he was putting up decent numbers though.. 10G – 12A in 44 Games but was a -17. It’s kind of scary looking at his stats from Juniors and then looking at potential picks… I never knew he had such high numbers.

Well, it did take some effort to find this. Glad it was worth it in terms of messing with yer heads. :P
