I’d like to invite anyone to post your comments on the game, as it is played live here, if you like. The Oilers forum and other sites have a long tradition of fans posting on their sites as the game is live, and I’d be happy to see the same thing happen here. I expect that it will take a while before that really takes off, but feel free to be one of the people to say “oh I used to post on the game day threads on The Foil way back in the day.” :P

POST GAME SUMMARY

Edmonton 4
Calgary 1

Here are the point getters for both teams:

1. P. O’Sullivan (10:11 – 1st) from Plante and Gilbert.
2. P. O’Sullivan (01:25 – 2nd) from Comrie and Stone
3. J. Jaffray (PPG, 10:26 – 3rd) from Lundmark
4. S. Horcoff (EN, 19:32 – 3rd) unassisted

For the Schremp fans, he looked pretty decent in the way of passing. I even saw him back checking all the way behind his own goal line at one point early on. He looked pretty solid running the PP. One one particular play on the PP, he fired a laser over to Horcoff, Hemsky-style. But alas, it was saved.

The vets – Moreau, Horcoff and Staios – each looked pretty solid out there. Horcoff really had a good game and was busting his butt the whole time. Comrie was also a demon out there, especially on the powerplay, wheeling around. On the 2nd powerplay, I would say it was all him as he circled behind the net and fired it into a crowd to which O’Sullivan punched it home from within the crease (O’Sullivan had some good luck tonight, but that’s how it can go when you actually shoot the puck).

There were a couple of fights in the game. In the first one, Dean Arsene threw a few awkward looking punches at Garth Murray, but nothing really landed. More of a wrestle-fest. In the second one, Stortini took on Prust. I thought he handled him quite well and got the win, landing a couple of good shots.

The penalty kill was really solid tonight (with exception to the one goal by Jaffray). Credit to Horcoff mostly for that. He was paired up with JFJ, and the two looked very reliable there. O’Sullivan also drew a lot of ice time (with Stone).

Didn’t see much of Kip Brennan.. at least not noticeable, but he threw a huge hit on a Flame early on.

From what I saw of “Mean” Dean Arsene, he looked pretty reliable out there playing with Staios. At one point, the Flames even had a 3-on-2 and he and Staios did a good job of breaking up the play. Solid game for Arsene, even if his fight wasn’t anything to write home about.

Taylor Chorney looked not too bad, but he missed a wiiiide open in period two.

JDD and Dubnyk both were pretty solid in the nets. JDD stopped all he faced through 1 and a half, but wasn’t tested really that hard. Dubnyk’s one goal allowed game with the Flames on the powerplay. Lundmark fired a beautiful stretch pass to Jaffray who got in behind our last man back. He came in all alone and fired a wrister from the right dot, beating Dubnyk cleanly.

Final shots in the game were 30 for Edmonton and 31 for Calgary.

Overall it was a pretty decent first game for the Oil. Tomorrow should be an interesting test. We’ll get to see these line ups:

Nilsson Gagner Hemsky
Penner Cogliano Eberle
Cornet Reddox Pisani
Brule Pouliot MacIntyre

Apparently that top six worked really well together today in practice earlier. Interesting choices.

Comrie getting in there. 91? Has he heard back from Dougie yet?

  2. LateNightOilFan says:

Garbage goal but liking the havoc they created around the net. O’Sully is making a statement, and good patience by Comrie.

  3. steve-o at concert says:

Schremp sucks. I am at a concert (between the buried and me rule) so I’m can’t comment. Sorry boys

  4. LateNightOilFan says:

One of the posters on the OMB GDT followed Stone’s playing days in Manitoba but hasn’t heard him called Rocky before. Anyway…

  5. gr8one says:

    Stone looks pretty good….

  6. gr8one says:

how the hell did chorney miss that? lol

  7. Racki says:

Schremp looking decent on the PP, as could be expected. No questions about his 5v4 play.

  8. Racki says:

gr8one: no doubt on Chorney… WIDDDE open net. Yikes. And people get on Horc! :P

  9. Trogdor says:

    Schremp heard that

steve-o at concert: Schremp sucks. I am at a concert (between the buried and me rule) so I’m can’t comment. Sorry boys

  10. Racki says:

oh damn, I forgot that concert was tonight.. that’s a damn good one.

This guy sounds considerably less cenile than Rod Phillips (albeit just as ancient, probably) and Rocky Stone is a clever nickname, so I wouldn’t doubt it if that’s what it was. But who knows ;)

  12. Racki says:

Cool, Doobie Doo between the pipes now as both sides do a goalie change.

  13. LateNightOilFan says:

Wow, is DD’s mask ever blue. LOL at Storts not getting any shots on net during DD’s warmup…

  14. Racki says:

Arsene looks pretty stable back there so far. Good defense on that 3-on-2.

  15. Hockey Noob says:

Jeez! You see Horcoff back checking this game? Nice play, he’s playing like it’s the SCF, lol.

  16. Racki says:

haha, yah Noob, I noticed that both him, Moreau and Staios are playing pretty hard out there, setting good examples for the others.

  17. Trogdor says:

Nice kill on the penalty. Flames didn’t get set up until about 15 secs left.

  18. Racki says:

    Another nice penalty kill.

  19. Hockey Noob says:

Only one problem with DD… Hearing his name is probably going to make a lot of people smoke a lot more if he gets the backup role, lol.

  20. gr8one says:

wow, that was kind of eerie watching the Oilers actually spend an extended period of 5 on 5 time in the other teams zone, I could get used to that!

  21. Hockey Noob says:

Maybe it’s just the announcer, is his name really pronounced, “Doob nick?”

  22. Racki says:

I don’t know, but I’ve heard it pronounced mostly “Doob-nick” moreso than I have heard “duhb-nick” (he’s also from Cow-town, so those guys might know a bit better).

  23. gr8one says:

lol…anyone else have any trouble reconciling Tencers voice with his weaselly looks?

  24. Racki says:

He’s made his name now though. I used to always think he looked like the little kid trying to break into the Oilers dressing room. “Uh, hey guys! Can I get your autograph?”. His on air attitude can be pretty funny though when he starts getting ballsy. I heard him say “bitch and moan” and then “balls” talking about Heatley last night. (Something like, “Heatley bitched and moaned for a trade and then has the balls to refuse a deal”)

  25. Racki says:

Penalty to Moreau for trying to blow through some guys head with his fist/stick. Typical Moreau penalty ;) (assuming he was the one that got it)

  26. gr8one says:

yeah, I actually like him quite a bit, but man he does not look like his voice(if that makes sense)

but to get back to the Oilers, man I wish MPS and Omark were at this training camp…why isn’t MPS?

  27. Trogdor says:

Maybe we can get the “Doob” chant going if Dubnyk gets some time in Edmonton.

  28. Hockey Noob says:

It’s hard to get used to seeing the Oilers so effective on the PK, lol–of course this is vs. mostly non-NHLers.

  29. LateNightOilFan says:

gr8one: yeah, I actually like him quite a bit, but man he does not look like his voice(if that makes sense)but to get back to the Oilers, man I wish MPS and Omark were at this training camp…why isn’t MPS?

Season already started in Sweden I think. Something like that.

  30. Trogdor says:

Another chance for them to look good on the pk…

  31. gr8one says:

I can just see the headlines if he has a really has a really bad game…

    “Doobie gets lit up”

  32. gr8one says:

or, Quinn trying to motivate him…

    “Quinn sparks a Doobie”

    *groans*

  33. Racki says:

Yes MPS is under contract in Europe (not sure with what team though) and apparently can’t come over here. I’ll try and find some details.

  34. Racki says:

LOL gr8one.. love the Quinn one

  35. Trogdor says:

    And another pk chance…

  36. Racki says:

Jesus, the refs hate us since mid 2nd period.

  37. Racki says:

Damn, they score a goal and it sounds like my speakers are about to explode.. *CHHHHHH static… chhhhhttttt… horn*

  38. Trogdor says:

Think JDD is smiling? Maybe just a little?

Gr8one, you should be doing headlines for the Sun.

  39. LateNightOilFan says:

Crap – who let the Flamer get behind the D there, or was he coming off the bench?

  40. Racki says:

As for MPS, he has one year left on his contract with Timra in the SEL, that’s why he can’t play here: http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/hockey/nhl-draft-09/Oilers+pick+Anton+Lander+trade+Brodziak/1740162/story.html

  41. Racki says:

    Did Calgary switch goalies again?

  42. Hockey Noob says:

David Staples is giving away tickets to the Wednesday game on twitter. Msg him if you’re interested.

  43. gr8one says:

    Trogdor>

I love me some strongbad emails, everytime I see your name I can’t get the damn song out of my head…”burninating the countryside!! TROGDOR!!!!”

I actually have a strongbad hoody(insert nerd comment here)

if anyone has no idea what Trogdor is…

  44. Hockey Noob says:

I love this announcer… did he just say “shrimp” instead of “schremp?”

  45. Racki says:

Hockey Noob: David Staples is giving away tickets to the Wednesday game on twitter. Msg him if you’re interested.

Wow, how awesome of him is that?

  46. LateNightOilFan says:

Hockey Noob: I love this announcer… did he just say “shrimp” instead of “schremp?”

    I thought I heard shrump actually…

  47. Racki says:

Damn this feed likes to cut out on me at the wrong times. Comrie wheeling all over the ice.

  48. Racki says:

HAHA LNOF, I just heard Shrump now too. You’re right.

    Gooooal Oilers! Tom Gilbert.

  49. gr8one says:

    woot, good goal TG!

  50. Racki says:

    Assist to Rob Shrump.
