Hopefully he'll grow into that jersey

Seems like a whole lot of build-up for nothing, but I’ll let you guys be the judge for yourselves. Full transcipts here.

Here’s the most significant snippet from the conference (although again, not much was said):

“In the months ahead, we hope to select a suitable site, develop a master plan for the development’s various components, choose a lead architect for the project, settle on an operating and financial framework, launch a project website, and bring a well-considered plan before City Council,” said Mr. LaForge. “At the end of the day, we envision a vibrant downtown with new housing, retail, office and public space, hotels, residential housing and other amenities, all anchored by a world-class entertainment and sports venue. We envision a neighbourhood that is well-integrated with public transit, livable, walkable, environmentally responsible and a benefit to downtown, surrounding communities and all of Northern Alberta.”

“Needless to say, this is a very ambitious agenda and it will take time to pull it all together,” added Mr. LaForge. “We recognize this project is really all about the kind of future Edmonton wants to have, so we fully expect – and welcome – a healthy public dialogue, but until we are further along there is little more we can say, other than ‘stay tuned’.”

David Staples has a good article up with some more quotes from the press conference as well as a translation as to what Patrick LaForge REALLY meant. Funny stuff ;)

Any word on if there’ll be a design competition for the project or if they’ll pick a team (architects/engineers/project managers etc.) beforehand?

  2. Horpensky says:

Nothing really new, except hearing it from the horse’s mouth. It sounds like it is still in very early stages, and projects like this take a long time to get going. They have an end product envisioned, but getting from start to finish is a huge task. They still gotta find out what it will look like, how the engineers will build it, who will finance it, who will build it, figure out construction schedule, public concerns, working with the government, etc.

Pharsyde: I think that’s still to be decided, and as Horpensky mentioned, they still have quite a bit more to figure out yet.

Hah, Hockey Noob–where the hell did I come up with that one? It was fine for the Oilers forum, but now it’s getting a little ridiculous, lol. Maybe it’s time for some re-branding of my pseudonym, lol.

Back on topic… I like the concept behind this in terms of both the location as well as increasing the development density downtown.

  5. Racki says:

Yah, our downtown is a real shit hole. It would be nice to spruce it up. As far as your pseudonym, I think of it as an ironic nickname for you, as you’re not at all a hockey noob. But I’d say let it stick!
